The first time you try to do the Hammer-Rally, you only need to hit the ball 10 times between Mario and Luigi. Once you fulfill this quota, you will unlock Endless Mode, where you can hit the ball as many times as you can.
The best way to reach that 100-hit streak record is to practice and keep trying. Getting a feel for how this minigame progresses can really help you reach your goal. It may take a couple of tries, but you can get there eventually.
The timing for the button hits will gradually increase as the minigame goes on. You may notice the tempo change a bit more distinctly every ten to twenty hits, so try to follow the pace and speed up little by little.
The tempo gets significantly faster at around the 50- to 60-hit mark and 70- to 80-hit mark, so be careful!
It is generally better to swing your Hammer earlier rather than waiting for the ball to get close to Mario or Luigi. The window for the swings is actually quite wide, making it ideal for you to press the X or Y button while the ball is aligned with the top of the scoreboard or even the Save block in the background once the tempo picks up.
So that the tempo of the overworld music doesn’t interfere with your Hammer Rally timing, it is recommended to turn the volume of your Nintendo Switch system all the way down.
It may help your concentration if you can’t hear the game audio and only rely on the visual cues.
If it’s the visuals that mess with you, focus on the top center of the screen, above the scoreboard. Don’t follow the ball with your eyes. Instead, view it from your periphery, and try to mentally block out anything that can distract you.
The score in the middle of the screen may become a source of anxiety in particular for many players, which can throw off your feel of the tempo. Try not to look at it.
You may find it easier to use two hands for pressing the buttons, with your left thumb on the Y button and your right thumb on the X button, rather than moving your right thumb back and forth. This prevents your hand from getting tired and sluggish.
Using your right index and right middle fingers to press the buttons like a keyboard may also work for you.
While a bit more tedious, you can remap your X and Y buttons to the L and R shoulder buttons to make it easier to do this minigame.
You can remap the buttons by going to your Switch’s System Settings. Then from Controllers and Sensors, select Change Button Mapping. You can change the corresponding button controls for each of your Joy-Cons or other connected controllers.
The Hammer-Rally minigame can first be found on Twistee Island, just south of the center stage at the plaza. Hit the machine with your Hammer in order to start the minigame.
You will need to have the Hammer unlocked first before you can do this minigame. The Hammer can be obtained after completing either Raynforst Island or Twistee Island—whichever island you visited first.
However, this means that if you opt to go to Twistee Island before Raynforst Island, you won’t be able to play this minigame unless you come back.

Another Hammer-Rally location can be found at Slippenglide Island. Your score for all Hammer-Rally locations are shared, but you can complete this machine’s 20-hit quota and earn more rewards.

There is also another Hammer-Rally location at Jellyfish Island where you need to complete the 15-hit quota to get the rewards.
