Types of Side Quests

Limited-Time Special Quests

Some side quests can only be completed within a limited time frame. These are marked as Special Quests.

When you find a special quest, do not progress the main story until you have completed the quest. Advancing the main story may make the special quest disappear, and it will no longer be available in your current playthrough.

Billdit and Maykit Crafting Side Quests

The crafting side quests you can get on Shipshape Island depend on who you chose to go to first: Billdit at Raynforst Island or Maykit at Twistee Island.

If you chose to go to Raynforst Island first, Billdit will be the one to establish the workshop, and you will be able to get his gear crafting requests. If you chose to go to Twistee Island first, Maykit will man the workshop and have accessory crafting requests.

These quests can be unlocked by talking to the one manning the workshop (either Billdit or Maykit) and selecting Hear Request.

Regular Side Quests

Most side quests are just regular side quests that can be done at any point in the game after they’ve been unlocked. A few side quests are automatically unlocked at certain points in the story, but for most side quests, you will have to talk to a particular character to start them.

How to Unlock Side Quests

Defeat the Boss at Rumbla Island

Side quests only start appearing after finding both Billdit and Maykit from Raynforst and Twistee Island respectively, then defeating the boss at Rumbla Island.

This is also when you get access to the Return Pipe, which should allow you to travel between islands you’ve visited more easily.

Talk to Characters With an Icon

Characters that have side quests available would often have a thought bubble icon near their heads. Try fast traveling to islands you’ve gone to before, and look out for these characters if you want to take on some side quests!

Check the Map for Icons

You can also find the side quest icons by looking at the map in your menu. These icons will also change depending on your progress on the quest.

Red icons indicate limited-time quests that will disappear if you progress the story, so make sure to do those as soon as possible!
