Shatter is an elemental reaction in Genshin Impact that occurs when a Frozen enemy is damaged by a blunt weapon or Geo attack. Learn how to use Shatter, the best characters, and the best teams for it in this guide!
Shatter occurs when a Frozen enemy is damaged by Blunt damage or Geo damage, causing them to break out of their Frozen state, triggering Shatter.
This Shatter damage is increased by the Elemental Mastery of the character breaking the Frozen opponent.
To trigger Shatter, you first have to apply Frozen by afflicting an enemy with both Hydro and Cryo in any order. This will cause them to become encased in ice and be unable to move.
It should be noted that other reactions can break them out of the Freeze, preventing you from triggering Shatter onto them.
While the enemy is Frozen, hit them with a blunt attack from any character, likely a greatsword user, or someone like Wriothesley using his Charged Attack, and it will break the ice and cause Shatter, dealing Cryo DMG.
Take note that if there are off-field Hydro and Cryo applications present at the time of the Shatter, the enemy can easily be refrozen and Shattered again, giving you a way to effectively stunlock your opponents.
Shatter is a very niche elemental reaction that has its uses when occurring as a side-effect of other reactions, not even having its own name as an actual reaction.
Nevertheless, the best characters to trigger Shatter would be those who are able to land consistent blunt attacks, like Claymore users, and some special cases.
Wriothesley is one of the units that, when placed in a Freeze team, can trigger Shatter using his Charged Attack, which will be even more consistent due to his Charged Attacks being part of his Normal Attack string.
This indirectly sets him up as the premier Shatter DPS option due to how easily and how often he triggers Shatter in addition to Freeze.
Wriothesley Rating and Best Builds
Freminet specifically has a viable playstyle build for the Shatter reaction, with his Elemental Skill being a good source of cryo and blunt damage, allowing him to trigger Shatter consistently.
It is worth noting that even if you opt to run him as a Physical DPS, running a Hydro unit with him in his teams ensures that he will trigger Shatter every other attack if given enough Cryo and Hydro application from teammates.
Freminet Rating and Best Builds
Main DPS | Sub-DPS | Support | Support |
---|---|---|---|
Wriothesley | Furina | Kazuha | Charlotte |
Freminet | Rosaria | Kazuha | Kokomi |
These are the common choices for Cryo-centric Shatter teams, as the on-field Main DPS can dictate when to trigger Shatter due to being able to Freeze and break opponents.
For these, the most important part is that it is built similarly to a Freeze team, and that the Main DPS can break them out of the Freeze with a blunt strike.
