E lo fa mostrandoci le due settimane di vacanza a Bognor a inizio settembre, tra riti e ruoli consolidati nel tempo, le abitudini e la lealtà nei confronti della casa dove i signori Stevens entrarono per la prima volta in luna di miele per poi in seguito tornare ogni singolo anno, con la famiglia sempre più numerosa. Il signor Stevens, metodico e orgoglioso di queste occasioni che gli danno modo di indossare il manto del vero capofamiglia, consentendogli di dimenticare le delusioni della vita. La moglie, che non ama il mare ma non lo dice, beandosi della gioia della sua famiglia e godendosi il suo bicchiere di Porto serale. Dick, ormai diciassettenne, schiacciato tra un lavoro deludente e la lealtà verso il padre e le sue aspettative, che aspetta il mare per potersi fermare a riflettere sul da farsi Mary, la figlia maggiore, tutta casa e lavoro, senza amiche. Molto simile al padre, ma anche con la segreta voglia di stringere amicizie e di uscire dal bozzolo. E Ernie, piccolo e entusiasta di tutto, con passioni ardenti ed effimere.
Non c'è una trama diversa dal "ecco chi sono gli Steve s, ed ecco una loro vacanza a Bognor", ma è comunque piacevole....more

Si respira la Guerra Fredda e il timore che un qualunque pretesto possa scatenare una disastrosa terza guerra mondiale che nessuno vuole. Abbiamo un gioco mortale in corso tra Russia e America, con in palio il sottomarino Ottobre Rosso e i suoi ufficiali. Abbiamo Marko Ramius, valente comandante di sottomarini che decide di farla finita con l'Unione e di passare all'Occidente... avvisando della cosa la madrepatria, per arroganza, e scatenando così una sontuosa caccia all'uomo. Abbiamo Jack Ryan, che qui fa praticamente la spalla: all'inizio fa il suo lavoro di analista, ma poi su navi (toh, oltre agli aerei soffre poco anche le navi!) e soprattutto sui sottomarini è un pesce fuori d'acqua, si dà da fare ma soffre e chiaramente i riflettori sono per gli specialisti. Ramius e Mancuso, Jones e Thompson, i piloti dei caccia e i comandanti delle navi. Adrenalinico e claustrofobico, non avendo mai visto il film non sapevo neanche cosa potesse accadere (e quindi i due colpi di scena quando pensavo fosse solo la caccia al sottomarino e la necessità di farlo sparire, non me li aspettavo)....more

Si, certo, lavora sulle basi del primo libro (e chiaramente rispetto a quello manca ormai l'effetto sorpresa relativo a questo mondo futuro e alle sue leggi) ma lo fa con grande intelligenza, mescolando le carte e dandoci prevalentemente un punto di vista che potremmo definire del Thunderhead. Anche la nuova aggiunta al cast dei personaggi è legata al Thunderhead, e i brani in apertura di capitoli ci aiutano a comprendere meglio questa onnipresente IA che governa l'umanità.
Poi certo, ci sono sempre Citra e Rowan al centro di tutto, Anastacia e Lucifero. Lei intenta a essere una Falce seguendo i precetti dei suoi maestri, e sempre più importante all'interno della Compagnia. Lui paria ricercato, dedito alla caccia e alla distruzione delle Falci corrotte. Legati ma condannati ad essere separati per sempre. O no? In questo il finale è ironico, oltre che sorprendente.
Un finale che ribalta tutto e fa tabula rasa per il prossimo volume, portando a compimento una serie di complotti non indifferenti e in maniera sublime anche se tremenda.
A questo punto però mi aspetto che Faraday torni a splendere nel gran finale, magari trovando proprio lui la camera blindata, e forte di chissà quale grande segreto scoperto. Che immagino si riferisca agli anelli o meglio alle loro pietre, e a come disinnescarle togliendo così lo status di Falci a tutti e rendendoli soggetti all'autorità del Thunderhead.
Massima solidarietà comunque per il povero Grayson, preso a ceffoni da tutti praticamente dall'inizio alla fine....more

Adesso la storia prosegue, dall'ingresso trionfale a Milano di Ottone e del futuro capofamiglia Matteo al periodo del loro governo, sempre con un occhio fuori dalle mura cittadine per tenere d'occhio le mosse dei Torriani.
Ma come il titolo fa intuire, accanto alle vicende politiche dei Visconti abbiamo altro, la storia di una loro cugina, Maifreda, la papessa di Milano.
E che sarà mai questa papessa? Io almeno non lo sapevo, non conoscevo Santa Guglielma né soror Maifreda da Pirovano, non conoscevo questa "eresia" in anticipo di almeno sette secoli (se non di più, visto l'andazzo) e onestamente pensavo fossero meno "legali" i processi inquisitori.
Una gran bella passeggiata nella storia milanese e dell'Italia, oltre che della cristianità, accompagnati da una penna che ti fa appassionare a Frida e a Matteo, ma anche a Galeazzo e Marco, a Guido e Cassono. E che ti tiene incollato alle pagine anche più del dovuto. Nelle note finali poi Livio ci fa intuire il lavoro assurdo fatto per poter scrivere questo libro... complimenti!...more

Mei, oltre ai tipici problemi dell'adolescenza ha anche il guaio di essere di sangue misto, nipote di questa donna inglese ormai vedova. Una cosa che solitamente non crea chissà quale problema, ma non dubito in Giappone (e negli anni novanta) potesse essere causa di fastidi.
Da qui la sua decisione di abbandonare la scuola, cui la famiglia reagisce spedendola dalla nonna. Mai scelta fu più felice: dalla nonna Mai riacquista salute e sicurezza, aiutata dallo stile di vita semplice e naturale della parente ma anche dalle sue confidenze. Le dice infatti di essere una strega, discendente di una stirpe di streghe, e che quindi anche lei ha gli stessi poteri. Potrà vedere il futuro e udire le voci della natura, ma soprattutto avere la forza d'animo di essere sé stessa, di fortificarsi contro le avversità della vita, di non avere paura.
Un'estate durante la quale Mai inizia gli allenamenti che l'aiuteranno a vincere i propri timori, partendo dal darsi una routine quotidiana e arrivando al prendere le proprie decisioni portandole a compimento, senza farsi convincere del contrario.
La storia dell'amore di una nonna per la nipote che tanto le ricorda il marito, al punto di lasciarle un messaggio che solo lei vedrà e che l'aiuterà a svoltare definitivamente.
Carini anche i racconti finali, due ambientati nel passato e uno quasi verso la fine della storia, dal punto di vista della nonna.
E niente, ho un debole per queste storie. E per la scrittura giapponese....more
