“He didn’t want the polish or the shine. He wanted the darkness.”
I started reading this and I actually didn’t know what to expect. I don’t think that I’ve ever read something ‘dark’ before. I didn’t know how the romance was going to play its part between two men that tried to kill each other. To be honest, that is another level of enemies-to-lovers for me.
I admit it was captivating even though I had to suspend some disbelief.
Daniel Nieto is a cartel kingpin whose wife was murdered by Stavros Konstantinou. Daniel wants to avenge his wife’s death so he goes after Stavros to make him pay for the crime he committed.
The blurb says almost everything you need to know but it doesn’t prepare you to actually face this book. The first 25% was really hard to read, the torture that undergoes Stavros is not for delicate minds. It was violent, bloody, raw, and cruel. The descriptions are so well done that you almost hear the blood dripping to the floor.
“My foot will remain at your throat, when I’m here and even when I’m not, to ensure you never forget. Your life is mine now.”
If you ask me to describe this book with one word, I’ll say: intense. It was intense from beginning to end. Not only the torture was intense, but also their feelings, their thoughts. These men were grieving and they had so much hate inside them that I don’t know how their feelings change from hate, to lust and then to love. That’s where you have to suspend some disbelief.
I think their similarities were what they liked about each other. This wasn’t a case of opposites attract each other.
“I think I’m your mirror image.” He held Daniel’s Gaze. “Like knows like, yes?” Stavros licked his chapped lips. “The monster in you recognizes the monster in me,” he whispered. “And it wants to play.”
And if I had to describe Stavros and Daniel’s relationship, it will be: passionate
“I get in the same fucking room with you, and catch afire.”
Daniel and Stavros together were extremely hot and kinky!
“Your touch kills me, Daniel confessed through the thickness in his throat. “It’s the sweetest murder, and I want it again and again.”
The steam was pretty nice in here, they were setting my kindle on fire but it was too much sex for my liking. I wanted more plot development, but the storyline was pretty flat for the MCs being a cartel kingpin and a hired assassin. Besides, I didn’t like that the side characters were extremely perceptive, Daniel didn’t talk much about his problems but everyone seems to know what was going on with him and I didn’t find that quite realistic.
However, I was completely engrossed with this book; I enjoyed it a lot. For this being a ‘dark’ story or whatever, it has their pretty sweet and endearing moment. I liked the author didn’t make many mistakes with the Spanish; I only saw two minor mistakes. The first mistake was that the verb “like” was badly conjugated and the other one was the lack of an indefinite article. Nothing too big, overall, the Spanish was almost impeccable.
Geez, I have many quotes from this book. Stavros and Daniel’s conversation were my undoing, I was swooning Every.Single.Time. This is my favorite quote:
“Soy todo tuyo,” he whispered the words into Stavros’ skin. He hooked an arm around Stavros’ thigh and lifted his head, meeting those eyes. They waited for him. “Yo soy tuyo y tú eres mío.” I am yours and you are mine
