New Pokemon Snap does have an autosave feature! The game autosaves your progress after you finish a course, right before Professor Mirror gives you the option to Save Photos to Album, Retry, or Return to Camp. Autosaving is denoted by an aperture symbol on the top right of the screen.

How to Save Manually

You can manual save in New Pokemon Snap only after editing a photo through your Photodex or Album in the Lab. The game has a confirmation prompt if you want to save your edit.

There is no other way to manual save, as all research progress is already autosaved after completing a course. Manual saves are also denoted by an aperture symbol on the top right of the screen.

In the middle of a course

If you don't think you can complete a course but want to save your progress for that run of the course so far, you can just hit the Quit Research button in the Pause Menu. Doing so will end the research but you will still get to show all the photos you took to Professor Mirror, just as a regular game.

Alternatively, you could also put your Nintendo Switch on Sleep Mode in the middle of a course, and you can just pick back up from the same point without losing any progress or having to repeat the course.
