I read this book as part of a buddy read, and wouldn't have picked it up if it hadn't been for that, what a loss that would have been for me. This booI read this book as part of a buddy read, and wouldn't have picked it up if it hadn't been for that, what a loss that would have been for me. This book was fantastic!! It did start out a little slow, it flips between 1893 and present day. At first I wasn't sure what was going on, but then with the slowly dolling out of info I got sucked into the characters of 1893. Didn't really care for the present ones and thought to myself, well that is ok, as I liked the old ones, but then we were given some great info and all of a sudden I was all in and couldn't turn the pages fast enough.
What I really liked and thought was very well done was the time flips between what was going on in the story. The breaks seemed to come at crucial places and I found myself screaming "Noooooo", in my head until I remembered where we left off things and I had to now what was going on in that time. It was interesting too, how as the action picked up the flips between time got shorter and shorted.
The parallels between the different groups of people in each time was interesting too. Some of them were very innocent, others just plain bad, and others good people put in bad situations and did what they had to do. The consequences to their actions did not often match what should have had happen to them and some of them were just plain wronged in a horrible way.
This book does make you think about the choices that you make in life and whether karma will boomerang back on you or just bitch slap you and what you can do to break the cycle....more

I thought the concept of a resort for vampires that allowed them to embrace their inhibitions was interesting, especially with it being in the wilds of Alaska.
I liked Vivian/Dria and Rafe. They seemed to blend their life as a couple and running the resort very well. I also liked how through the book we were shown glimpses of Vivian's past and her brushes with Rafe. They seemed well suited for each other allowing them to play off each others strengths and weaknesses.
I also enjoyed meeting all the different guests that stayed there and seeing Vivian work to see their fantasies were meet. She seemed to really take an interest in making sure they all had a great time.
Another great aspect was the staff. They had to be let in on the whole secret of the vampires are real. Seeing things from both sides was interesting, how the staff really liked working there (with unusual perks to be had) and how Vivian protected them like family.
Vivian's ability to deal with the unexpected came in real handy as she encounter a dead body in one of the rooms, the discovery of which threw her in to detective mode to find out what happened. In the search for answers Vivian discovers events from her past rearing in the now. As the situation escalates Vivian is finding herself doing things that she really hasn't wanted to do in order to protect those around her, making the hard choices and crossing lines that she prefers not to and getting help from people in unexpected places.
Overall this book was a fun read with lots of interesting people and things going on. My only negative is that the first half of the book and the second half of the book seemed like 2 different ones with the same characters. Had it not been for this, the book would be 4 stars....more

Jayne is doing the best she can in the situation of having your whole world change. After realizing that demons are real in the last book she is now trying to set herself up for success by learning as much as she can about all the bad things that are out there. I found her thoughts of hopping from one house to another, to another to be funny. Eric seems to have left with an unlimited supply of houses and money to boot, which will make things easier. I also love how the guys are 100% in with her forming their own little company and seem to be enjoying the perks.
This adventure seems to hit a little close to home for Jayne as she finds out truths about her family, herself, and the demons that didn't fit her preconceived notions making her reevaluate her world yet again. Her relationship with the guys seems to be both solid and shaky at the same time until they all face up to the things they are hiding for each other and themselves.
This was a hard book to put down with all the things going on and had a bonus of being set in New Orleans and the voodoo world which is always great fun to read about....more

At the end of the last book Chloe was betrayed by someone close to her and we found her in this book dealing with that. After crash course in supernaturals she knew not to trust anyone that was around her. So with her cards held close to her vest she set out to once again break out. This time she found help in a very unexpected place. Once they got out she had to track down the boys. Once out on their own all sorts of crazy things seemed to happen, not the least of which is Chloe dealing with her new found powers. Running all over to try to find a safe place and avoid the Edison group proved to be a huge challenge, one where anything went on the run. The more Chloe and company finds out, it seems like the more questions they have. Hopefully soon they will find someone that can give them some answers....more

I really liked the portions that were Sandy's. We learned so much about her life growing up. Some of the things I had guessed, but some of them really threw me. I also like the slow glimpses into Jason's past. I figured out pretty early what had happened to him. They both had so much in common it would have solved so many things if only they could have talked to each other.
Sandy's disappearance was hard. I couldn't figure out what was going on there. Everything seemed to be leaning to Jason and I really didn't want it to be him. I wasn't sure what was going on with the neighbor, but he didn't seem to be right either. Sandy's little affair seemed to go with her personality, but he didn't seem right either. There was just so many twists and turns that I couldn't turn the page fast enough.
In the end I was very surprised at how things ended in more than one way. I liked how unusual people stepped up to the plate to help out the innocent people in the end. But it does make me wonder if there are going to be any repercussions for those people....more

I did admire how Jack and Melissa handled things by trying to take the better road. It did bother me a little how they were written at first to seem perfect, so when the cracks appeared I liked how they seemed more real.
I also liked how they pulled in their friends to help them out. It seemed like there was a lot of history between all 3 men and Melissa melded in great with them. I also loved how they were able to win over some key policeman on their sides so that in the end there was help when it was needed most.
Right from the start I hated the Morelands and as the book went on it got worse. I don't know that I would have had the calmness that both Jack and Melissa possess most of the time.
I was surprised at some of the choices the characters made and the repercussions that there were because of it. Some of them paid a steep price for their actions, but I don't think that they would have had it any other way....more

I felt like I needed a dictionary to know what some of the terms used in the book were. Usually I will give up on a book when it is like this, but when I could follow I liked the story of Kovacs. I think if the story was pared down more with just the characters involved it would have been better.
Kovacs was an interesting guy who at first doesn't seem to have any morals or feeling left in his life. But that is deceiving, he just hides it really good. There were so many twits and turns in this book you never knew what was going to happen or exactly who the bad guy was until two thirds of the way through the book.
I would enjoy reading more about this character, but just can't handle the thought of another tedious read....more

What I noticed about the book andI read this book with a group and had it not been for that I would not have picked it up, but am glad that I read it.
What I noticed about the book and I think that I did because of the way I read it in 3 big chunks at a time was that it seemed to be about the 3 phases of the crime itself. It seemed like first there was the crime and the immediate aftermath, then about dealing with the repercussions something like that has in your life, but the last was about accepting it and getting on with your life. I really felt like even with the serious subject matter the message was one of happiness and uplifting. Odd I know.
The characters were written in such a way that you definitely had strong feelings about them. You were able to see them grow and change because of being affected by this.
This book is a hard read, but one that is worth it....more

She had a lot to deal with in the last book, this one finds her settling into her new role in life and dealing with the events of the past. Or at looks like that on the surface. In reality she has never gotten over her family dying in the crash and thinking it was somehow her fault that they did. She also is facing a big change in her relationship with Damen. They seem to be heading towards having sex, but every time that happens she can't help but think of his 600 hundred years of experience and how in all the times they have meet in her previous lives they have never crossed that boundary. Who wouldn't freak out about that!!
As they navigate these issues a new student shows up to shake things up within their friend group, and shake things up he does. Damen seems to be getting sick and not remember that he is an immortal, something he assured Ever couldn't happen. Ever being the smart cookie that she is figures things out with some help. In doing so she has to face her 2 big issues, and even going back in time with no memory of her now she realizes something is wrong. Riley seems to help her get back on course, but she is faced with big choices and the stakes couldn't be more high. She makes what she thinks is the right choice, but with grave repercussions, and here we sit at the end of the book. Big questions left swirling around that we won't get the answers to until the next book....more

When the book first starts out you seem to be just as confused as the townspeople. You don't know what is going on and still trying to figure out the people, even with the handy guide in the front.
As the story progresses you realize just how horrific the situation is, or maybe it just seems so from my point of view as I grew up in a town similar to this one and readily could imagine the things that went on. For me that is where the horror came in because it was so real. These are normal everyday people who get put in an awful situation and make some really bad decisions and then the choices that they make snowball from there. Once things really get rolling it is hard to stop them, those that try pay a really high price.
At some point in the story everyone has to question who they are at their core and how they want to live their lives. It is after they analyze things that the sides seems to split. Both sides want someone to follow and it just comes down to what who they believe is the better person to follow.
It was interesting to see the differences in how things were dealt with inside and outside the dome. Seeing how the government tried to deal with something they had no control over or had a clue how to deal with makes you wonder if it happens like that in real life.
The way the minds worked of the 2 leaders was interesting too. Sometimes they were thinking ahead to work things to their advantage, but others they just took advantage of things working out.
In the end those that needed to be punished were, while good people that should have made it didn't. The whole story makes you wonder where you would fall on the scope of things and which side you would be with....more

I really like the Darkyn series and thought it was the same. It took me until the end of the book to realize while it was in the same universe it was a little different. I like the new concept and am looking forward to see what happens.
The going back and forth with times and people at the beginning of the book very much confused me. It wasn't until I was over half way in that I realized what was going on and had to go back to read to really understand what happened.
I think it will be interesting to see Jessa find the takyn and what their individual talents will be. I liked how they had set up a website to communicate, but still were careful not to tell exactly who they were. This will bring all sorts of intrigue in the future like the surprise at the end of this book.
I also think there will be more involvement of GenHance, as they will be the big bad of the series. They seem so real because I can see companies actually doing this kind of gene altering in real life. Jonah doesn't seem to have any boundaries he will cross to get where he wants.
Mattias seems to be someone who will be at the ground level of organizing the coming together of the kyndred. I am looking forward to learning more about them, what happened to them, and where they came from. I also loved the cameo scenes from the darkyn characters and look forward to when the 2 worlds collide....more
