Pearl is one of the ten main characters of the series. She was the second character that Stephen Hillenburg created for the show. He was inspired to design her while working at the Ocean Institute, where he was a tour guide for whale-watching, and tended to a whale skeleton exhibit.[1]
Pearl's first official appearance was in the 1996 pitch bible for SpongeBob, which was called SpongeBoy Ahoy! at the time. Hillenburg created Pearl as a self-conscious teenage character who happens to be a very large whale. At first, he wanted her personality to match the actual traits of a sperm whale. Sperm whales have the biggest brain out of any living animal on Earth, so he wanted Pearl to be a super-smart math student.[2] The writing team felt that most viewers wouldn't understand the reference, so this was dropped from her final character.
