The treasure chest[1][2] or treasure box[3] (宝箱[4] takarabako?) is an object that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. By interacting with them, the player can unlock various in-game mechanics or obtain special items.

Game appearances[]

Sonic Rush Adventure[]

A Treasure chest

A treasure chest, from Sonic Rush Adventure

Sonic Rush Adventure marks the first appearance of treasure chests, where they are found at the Goal of each Act (except bosses). In this game, they are light brown (with a touch of yellow flames) with yellow and purple edges and a small red jewel at the tip. Instead of a lock, they close with a tether.

Treasure chests can be opened by attacking them. They will then rotate for a moment before opening, upon where they show a sparkling aura before moving onto the results screen. In normal Acts, treasure chests contain different Materials. During Marine's search missions, however, they contain Medals instead.

Sonic and the Black Knight[]

In Sonic and the Black Knight, treasure chests can be found in Missions in Adventure Mode. In this game, they each contain a collectable item, some of which can be exclusively found in them. To open a treasure chest and obtain the item inside, the player simply has to touch it. Like all other items, the item gotten from the treasure chest does not have an immediate effect, and must be identified at the Item Identification screen.

A type of Knight of the Underworld resembling treasure chests also occasionally during Missions. They usually grant an amount of Rings when attacked or touched, though they can be hard to make contact with due to their movements.

Sonic Generations[]

In the Nintendo 3DS version of Sonic Generations, the treasure chest is the counterpart to the Collection Room. From it, the player can select events, music, concept art, and models (which are unlocked automatically by clearing missions). The treasure chest's design is very similar to those ones from Sonic Rush Adventure.

Sonic Frontiers[]

In Sonic Frontiers, the treasure box is rare item that can be received in the Fishing Spot minigame hosted by Big the Cat. Being dumped into the pond of Cyber Space, when the player manages to fish the treasure box out of the lake, opening the box will reveal a Gold Card, which Big was searching for.[3] Obtaining the Gold Card will grant the player a change to exchange it for any item found on the "Trade Tokens" store list.[5] In very rare cases, some treasure boxes can also contain either Red Seed of Power or Blue Seed of Defense that also does not grant any Treasure Tokens but can be added to the player's Seed counter.[6][7]

A separate, rare variant called golden treasure box can be caught in one of four Fishing Spots, that contains total of 3 Gold Cards.
