Psychokinesis[1] (サイコキネシス[2] Saikokineshisu?), also called PK,[3] or PSI,[note 1] is a move that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a move used primarily by Silver the Hedgehog that first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). It is a technique that lets Silver move (-kinesis) matter with the mind (psycho-) remotely, and is a signature move amongst his psychokinetic powers.

Description[]

Psychokinesis is Silver the Hedgehog's most frequently performed move, which he uses to manipulate objects. When using it, Silver focuses his psychokinetic powers on the environment around him, allowing him to pick up surrounding objects and move them around at will without exerting physical force on them. When in use, Silver's psychic powers surrounds the targeted object with an aqua aura.

In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Psychokinesis is one of Silver's moves in gameplay and can be used for a variety of purposes. In this game, Silver is surrounded in a cyan aura himself when using Psychokinesis. To use this move in gameplay, the player has to hold down R1/Xbox-Button-RT.

Psychokinesis' primary function is to pick surrounding objects to use as projectiles against enemies. When using Psychokinesis near potential objects, the player will automatically pick them up, causing them to levitate around Silver. Psychokinesis will then remain active until Silver has thrown away the objects with either Psycho Smash, Hold Smash or Grab All, or simply drops them, which can be done by pressing R1/Xbox-Button-RT again. Additionally, if an enemy is paralyzed, Silver can pick them up with Psychokinesis as well. With each object picked up by Psychokinesis, however, Silver's Action Gauge decreases slightly; if it runs out or does not have enough energy, Psychokinesis cannot be used to pick up more objects.

Another use for Psychokinesis is to grab enemies' projectiles. If large projectiles, like fireballs or missiles, are fired by enemies, the player can use Psychokinesis to grab them in midair and then throw them back at enemies with Psycho Smash. Like regular objects, though, each grabbed projectile decreases Silver's Action Gauge, and if it runs out or does not have enough energy, Psychokinesis cannot grab more projectiles. In both cases, Silver is vulnerable to projectiles he hurls. So, if during gameplay the items he picks get behind him when the player flings them, Silver will get a damage from the impact.

By standing on top of a movable object (such as Crates or cars) and using Psychokinesis on it, it will cause Silver and the object in question to rise into the air until Silver reaches a peak of altitude. While standing on the object, Silver can fly through the air and reach higher areas, and the player can use the left control stick to direct the flight. Using Psychokinesis this way steadily drains the Action Gauge, however, and when it reaches 15-20%, the player can no longer move the object.

Silver the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

Psychokinesis can also be used to create paths in the game. By using Psychokinesis on a PK Mark, Silver will be able to reach a new area, either by a path being formed from surrounding objects that move permanently into place, by pulling apart cages blocking the path or by bending beams that will send Silver flying into the area. Using Psychokinesis this way does not drain Silver's Action Gauge.

In the boss battles against Silver, Silver can exclusively use Psychokinesis to grab the player's character when they get too close at the wrong time and throw them away, causing damage. This is impossible in normal gameplay but can be done in the game's multiplayer mode.

Sonic and the Black Knight[]

Within Sonic and the Black Knight, Psychokinesis is a technique used by Sir Galahad. He can use it to Levitate both himself and other objects such as his sword as seen in his victory animation. It's also implied that psychokinesis plays a part in his Soul Surge whereby he creates a series of magic rings on the ground that drains the opponent of Rings. It's this ability that is said to make him dangerous.[4]

Sonic Colors[]

In the Nintendo DS version of Sonic Colors, Silver is implied to use Psychokinesis (where it is called 'mind powers') in conjunction with Blaze's Pyrokinesis in order to attack Orbot and Cubot who had challenged the pair in Sweet Mountain. Cubot notes their powers to work in tandem, calling them "pretty, like fireworks!"[5]

Sonic Generations[]

In the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, Psychokinesis appears during the boss battle against Silver. In this game, Silver utilizes it to pick up surrounding objects to attack Sonic, using techniques such as Meteor Smash. Here, Silver is not surrounded by a cyan aura when using Psychokinesis.

in the 3DS version of Sonic Generations, Silver can be seen using Psychokinesis to throw boxes towards Sonic periodically within his rival battle.

Sonic Forces[]

Within the story of Sonic Forces, Silver uses Psychokinesis in order to levitate and attack. Psychokinesis is used offensively against the Phantom Copies of Shadow, Chaos and Metal Sonic, with Silver holding the several copies in place at one time for the rest of the Resistance to attack. In the background of cutscene 27, Silver can also be seen using his psychokinesis to hurl debris at a phantom copy of Zavok.

Sonic Rivals[]

Within Sonic Rivals, Silver uses his Psychokinesis within both Shadow the Hedgehog and Knuckles the Echidna's stories. In Shadow's story, Silver helps him cross a large chasm in Meteor Base Zone. Silver charges his psychokinesis before using it to throw Shadow to the other side of the chasm in a manor not too unlike his boss fights in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).

He also uses his Psychokinesis in the same level to bust down a door, and force broken switches into working once more.

Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity[]

Psychokinesis is used in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity by Silver. In his race start animation he is seen using it to Levitate both himself and his Extreme Gear; the Psychic Wave (Or any other board Extreme gear).

In gameplay Silver uses Psychokinesis as his means of attack when acquiring an attack item box. When in use, Silver will dismount his gear, splay his arms and charge forward, using his Psychokinesis to enhance his speed. If Silver encounters another racer he will reach forward and hit them with a Psychokinetically-enhanced slap.

Mario & Sonic series[]

While Silver's main means of special moves in the Mario & Sonic series are typically the Levitate and, in some games, the Teleport Dash, Silver has been seen using Psychokinesis in some of the games for special attacks.

The first game in the series he is seen using Psychokinesis is the Nintendo DS version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. Silver uses Psychokinesis within the story mode, using it once in a minigame where he must stop a series of moving balls blocking the path of the heroes and these must be stopped in order for them to progress. He is also seen using it to help Donkey Kong rescue some bananas the monkey had dropped into a chasm and was no longer able to reach. Within gameplay, Psychokinesis is used as part of Silver's ice hockey special where he uses this ability to lift his hockey stick and deal a high power shot.

In Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Silver can be seen using Psychokinesis during the Dream Fencing event where he will gather a chunk of land, assumed to be from the stage itself, and hurl it in a forward trajectory to deal large damage to his opponents.

In the Tokyo 2020 edition, as alluded to in the games opening, Psychokinesis is used for Silver's specials during both the regular and dream karate events. Silver will lift himself into the air and clap his hands together, sending a psychokinetic shockwave to his opponent which will send them flying backwards or even knock them out.

Sonic Runners[]

Following his split with Blaze, Silver has grown stronger and has discovered his true power.

in Sonic Runners, a variant of Silver was released known as ESP Silver. ESP Silver features a consistent and prominent Psychokinetic aura both in artwork and in gameplay. In gameplay, this changes Silver from a Speed Type to a Fly Type, giving the illusion of Silver being able to fly for longer due to his enhanced Psychokinesis.

Sonic Forces: Speed Battle[]

in Sonic Forces: Speed Battle varieties of Psychokinesis are used by Silver's alternative forms and Sir Galahad. Sir Galahad uses Psychokinesis for both his Psychic Strike attack, where he will throw his sword forward and back with Psychokinesis, and his Psychic Surge boost where he uses Psychokinesis to create two magic circles that blast him down the tracks and deal damage in a radius around him. Nutcracker Silver uses a move known as the Psychic Surprise, where Silver will send a green iron ball down the track via the use of Psychokinesis. A version of Silver, Chrono Silver, uses Psycokinetic Enhancers[sic], meant to boost and enhance Silver's Psychokinetic abilities.

Sega Heroes[]

In Sega Heroes one of Silver's abilities is "Psychokinesis". When used, Silver will levitate and gather a collection of cars with his Psychokinesis. He then unleashes a move similar to his Meteor Smash move from Sonic Generations to deal large damage to three adjacent enemies.

Sonic Speed Simulator[]

In Sonic Speed Simulator, Psychokinesis is used once more by ESP Silver. As such, like his Runners inception, Silver is surrounded in a prominent, ever-present psychokinetic aura. Using his enchanced Psychokinesis, he can use his powers to Levitate and fly for as long as the stamina gauge has power left in it. Within Sonic Speed Simulator, ESP Silver has a rarity of "Super".

There is also a trail within the game based on Psychokinesis. The Psychokinesis Trail is based upon Psychokinesis and Silver's cyan glow when using it. It is unlocked during Gold Style Silver's quests. When used, the player is surrounded in a cyan aura with sparkles, similar to Silver's Psychokinesis in other games, albeit not as bright.

Sonic Rumble[]

In Sonic Rumble, Silver can be seen using his Psychokinesis while using the Attack power-up. When used, Silver will charge forwards towards the nearest opponent at high speeds, being followed by a psychokinetic trail. During this attack, he will also summon rocks held aloft by his Psychic powers. Any opponent hit by this attack will lose 300 Rings.

He also uses his psychokinesis to Levitate himself at full speed and during his win animation, where he is surrounded in a prominent Psychokinetic aura.

Levitate[]

Levitate is a midair version of Psychokinesis used by Silver. By basically performing Psychokinesis on himself, Silver is able to levitate and fly through the air for a short time.

Shield of Light[]

Main article: Shield of Light

The Shield of Light is an enhanced version of Psychokinesis used by Silver in his Super State. It is only used during the boss battle against Solaris. With this move, Super Silver exerts a field that lets him grab Solaris' solid projectiles and energy balls, before throwing them back at him.

Archie Comics[]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, the ability is known as "Telekinesis", before the Super Genesis Wave. Silver usually extends his arm in order to lift, throw, hold and move objects, people, and himself easily. It is especially useful in deflecting any projectiles thrown at him. He tends to use this ability frequently, at times using it to throw entire buildings and disable people in a super state. In this version, a cyan aura appears when Silver uses his psychic powers like in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006).

After the Super Genesis Wave, Silver retains the same powers as before but can also manipulate energy with it, such as when he set out to close the Genesis Portals. Silver is highly proficient in the usage of his psychokinesis, being capable of briefly restraining beings like the Ifrit and deflecting attacks.

Sonic Comic[]

Psychokinesis is used in the two Sonic Comic stories silver appears within.

Act:014 Pumpkin Trigger[]

Silver and Tails meet in the present where Tails enquires if Silver has any stories from the future. Silver tells of a "pumpkin kebab" in Pumpkin Hill. The pair head to pumpkin hill to explore but find nothing there. Suddenly a meteor appears and Silver quickly moves to stop it with his Psychokinesis but becomes overwhelmed by its speed and weight. The meteor falls on top of another pumpkin and forms the pumpkin kebab.

Special Stage[]

Silver appears in the final Sonic Comic whereby he uses his Psychokinesis in order to deflect bullets and missiles produced by Doctor Eggman.

Sonic Forces: Stress Test[]

Within Sonic Forces: Stress Test Psychokinesis is used by Silver in order to aid Knuckles in stopping Chaos who had seemingly gone rogue. Despite Silver's efforts to use his Psychokinesis to hold the deity in place, he is unsuccessful. Before the pair can land a joint attack, Chaos vanishes, leaving the pair to be confused over the events that transpired.

IDW Publishing[]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series published by IDW, Silver once again has psychokinetic abilities. Whenever using his psychokinesis, Silver and the targets he affects get surrounded in a cyan aura. With it, Silver can telekinetically lift, throw, hold and move objects (and people) easily, and even immobilize enemies.[6][7] He can also form constructs out of psychokinetic energies, like lassos and force-fields for protection and encasing targets.[7] Silver can also use his psychokinesis on himself, thereby allowing him to hover and fly.[6]

While his psychokinetic powers can hold a vast amount of objects, Silver does have a limit to how many objects he can hold in a psychokinetic grip.[8] He also has trouble telekinetically grabbing multiple targets at once over greater distances with his psychokinesis, and must concentrate greatly in order to pull off such a feat.[9] He similarly cannot telekinetically grab targets that move too fast for him to focus on.[7]

2021 Cover stories[]

In Silver's 2021 story by Sonic Channel, Silver uses Psychokinesis firstly in order to stop Sonic in order to gain the speedy blue hedgehog's attention. He is later seen using Psychokinesis to lift aloft a bridge in Kingdom Valley which had been broken up into hundreds of pieces by an earthquake. Silver struggles to lift the bridge, which is said to weigh dozens upon dozens of tons, until the power of the nearby white Chaos Emerald reacts to his wishes to save the people stuck under the bridge and he is able to lift the bridge back into place.

Silver is also seen using Psychokinesis in the December story, where he blocks a 0.5% power blast from the Eclipse Cannon with a psychokinetic barrier.

Otherworld Comedy[]

In the Otherworld Comedy series by Sonic Channel from 2023, Silver uses Psychokinesis in both his April and August stories. In the April story, Silver uses his Psychokinesis to form a barrier over the ice rink both he and Elise were at in order to block out the rain.

In the August story, Psychokinesis is used by Silver offensively in order to throw objects at the monster attacking the hotel he was at. He later uses Psychokinesis defensively to protect himself and Blaze from the monster while the cat charged up a mass fire attack to end the threat for good.

Trivia[]

  • "Psychokinesis" is an umbrella term for any ability that involves using the mind to manipulate something.
  • According to Silver, Psychokinesis cannot grab lasers.
  • In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Silver calls his power 'psychokinesis'. In Sonic Rivals and Sonic Rivals 2, he calls it his 'ESP' ability. It should be noted, however, that 'psychokinesis' is an umbrella term for any ability that involves using the mind to manipulate something, while ESP is the acronym for "extrasensory perception", such as seeing things as they happen miles away, or seeing the future or past, and Silver was not demonstrating such abilities in the Rivals series.
    • Despite this, it can be argued Silver has used ESP abilities in the series.
      • In the IDW Publishing comics, Super Silver has demonstrated an ability similar to ESP whereby he could detect when there was no more Virus left on the planet.[7]
      • In Team Sonic Racing, the idea of Silver having Precognition is brought up, as he is able to sense something bad is upcoming in the races, which distracts him. Blaze suggests this to be due to his time travel. The game confirms his hunch to be correct when the Ultimate Energy Engine is stolen, and later when the group is in danger when Dr. Eggman's Final Fortress begins to fall out of the sky.[10] A similar moment happens once more in the IDW comics, where Silver stays in Sonic's timeline after the defeat of Master Overlord, having a hunch that the future was still in ruins.[9] Whether Silver actually has precognition or not is unconfirmed.
    • Interestingly, one of the particle effects for Silver's Psychokinesis in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) is known as "ESP_Aura" - predating the Sonic Rivals example.
      • This could possibly be where ESP Silver gets his name from.
Telekinesis

  • In Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, Lyric can be seen using an ability visually similar to Psychokinesis during the boss battle against him, where his hands glow green and cause large pillars to levitate.
  • Silver seems to be extremely strong while using Psychokinesis, as he is able to lift a ball of rock nearly half the size of Iblis, and then throw it back at him. Another example is in the boss fight against him in Sonic Generations when he hurls a colossal boulder made of wreckage at Sonic.
  • Strangely, there are some objects that cannot be picked by Psychokinesis in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), like ice balls and the spheres in Silver's Dusty Desert. This is most likely done in purpose for gameplay mechanics and not because Psychokinesis cannot pick them up.
  • Several of the games Silver has appeared in since his debut use sound effects from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) for various psychic abilities.
    • Sonic Generations, Sonic Runners and Sonic Forces all use the sound effect of the Teleport Dash. In Generations, this is used whenever Silver teleports, in Runners it's used whenever ESP Silver jumps, and in Forces, it's used when Silver charges towards Infinite in their battle.
    • Generations, Sonic and the Black Knight, and Sega Heroes use Silver's sound effect when the 'Psychokinesis' button is held. In Black Knight, this is used whenever Sir Galahad activates his Soul Surge. In Sega Heroes This sound effect is used for Silver's "Psychokinesis" ability.
    • In Sonic and the Black Knight, the sound effect for uplifting an object is used as Sir Galahad's Levitate.
    • In Black Knight, Sir Galahad also uses the 'levitate' sound effect whenever performing a jump attack with his sword.
    • In Sonic Forces, the sound effect of Psycho Smash is used when Silver uses his Psychokinesis to hold phantom copies in place. The Psychic Knife from Generations uses the release sound from the Psycho Smash.
  • Silver's psychokinesis often forms circular shapes of energy. This can be best seen in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic Generations, and Sonic Forces.
