Portal 1-2[1] or just 1-2, is a Cyber Space stage in Sonic Frontiers. It is the second Cyber Space stage in Kronos Island, and the second one overall.

Description[]

Main article: Sky Sanctuary

1-2 is a location in Cyber Space inspired by Sky Sanctuary, based on the specific depiction from the console/PC version of Sonic Generations. Being a part of the Cyber Space realm, it is a rather incomplete, fragmented incarnation of the Sky Sanctuary location set in the daytime. The Death Egg can be seen in the distance progressing through the stage.

Portal location[]

The Portal transporting to 1-2 is located at the south peninsula of the isolated island on the east side of Kronos Island. In order to make the Portal gain connection to the Cyber Space, the player is required to collect two Portal Gears, one of which is gained specifically after defeating the first Ninja in Kronos Island before reaching to the Portal.[2] When inserting a single gear to the Portal, the player is then required to defeat Tower who holds the second Portal Gear in its possesion and bring it to the Portal.[3][4]

Gameplay[]

Being a standard stage with primary gimmicks, the notable obstacle in 1-2 consist of bottomless pits in wide gaps with Balloons and Grind Rail sections.

Overview[]

1-2 begins with Sonic sprinting across a straightaway, speeding up with boost pads before declining on a slope. An optional high route can be taken via jumping into Dash Rings before the slope. From there, the player maneuvers through various narrow platforms and Grind Rails, spiraling through the Cyber Space recreation of Sky Sanctuary as the Death Egg looms in the distance. Partway through the level, Sonic must chain together a series of Homing Attacks onto several Eggrobos before reaching a steep bottomless pit, which only he can avoid by chaining Homing Attacks on Balloons that guide him to a rail grinding section, shortly before reaching the Portal Gate and ending the stage.

Red Star Ring locations[]

  • After the first upper section, near the ramp, the player should go in the middle to get the second Red Star Ring.
  • In the first grinding section, the player should switch to the middle Grind Rail to get this Red Star Ring.
  • At the end of the second grinding section, on the middle rail, there will be a Red Star Ring.
  • Near the end, before the Spikes and the wide spring that take the player to the Portal Gate, the player can find the last Red Star Ring.

Trivia[]

  • This stage's layout is similar to segments of Windmill Isle Daytime Act 2 from the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 version of Sonic Unleashed.
  • When the demo of Sonic Frontiers was presented at trade expos in 2022, all time requirements for different Ranks were adjusted to "99:59.00", meaning that the player would receive S Rank regardless how the Cyber Space stage has been cleared, including 1-2.[5]
  • Despite only being the second level, when compared to the other Cyber Space stages, 1-2 is notorious among its players to be difficult to achieve an S Rank on due to the already-strict time limit within the earliest version of the game, prior to the addition of the Spin Dash, deceleration slider and more.
    • Because of this, this is the only level to have the same S Rank requirement in the Extreme difficulty mode.
    • The difficulty of 1-2 has been humorously alluded to on the official Sonic YouTube channel.[6]
