It appears the Starfall Islands act as the CPU for Cyber Space. Once I'm out of here, I need to secure them at all costs.

Dr. Eggman, Sonic Frontiers

The Starfall Islands[1] (スターフォール諸島[2] Sutāfōru Shotō?) is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is an archipelago located on Earth inhabited by creatures called Koco.

Historically, the Starfall Islands were where an alien civilization known as the Ancients set up camp when they came to Earth after their home planet was destroyed by The End. On these islands, they created an advanced technology, Cyber Space, to preserve their culture, and established Portals all over the archipelago to access this dimension. Unfortunately, The End arrived at Earth and threatened to destroy this planet too, but the remaining Ancients trapped this entity within one of their Titans, Supreme, using the seven Chaos Emeralds. However, the ancient society did not last long and they vanished a few generations later, their spirits being contained by the Koco that now inhabit the islands.

Recently, the infamous Dr. Eggman sought to access the technology of the Ancients on the Starfall Islands in an attempt to conquer the world. During his campaign though, he was unsuccessful, leading to him being trapped in Cyber Space. Meanwhile, Sonic and his friends headed out to the islands after Tails detected some readings of the Chaos Emeralds there. When the blue hedgehog was separated from his allies, however, he embarked on an adventure around the Starfall Islands to rescue them, being unknowingly guided by The End to destroy the Ancients' Titans along the way. In the end though, Sonic defeated The End for good and the islands, along with the rest of the Earth, were saved.

Description[]

The Starfall Islands are an archipelago of several islands that house a myriad of set pieces across their unique biomes, including dense forests, expansive grass fields, towering mountains, overflowing waterfalls, sizzling deserts, coastal beaches, and ancient monuments and gardens.

Not quite entirely devoid of urbanization, the Starfall Islands are home to a number of ancient ruins from a past, yet highly advanced civilization that used to exist on them. In addition, strange robotic enemies roam the various islands. The islands are inhabited by the species known as Koco, lead by the Elder Koco. The archipelago is also subject to a meteor-shower phenomenon known as the Starfall.

History[]

Past[]

Over 4,000 years ago,[note 1] the Starfall Islands were visited by an alien society known as the Ancients, who escaped to Earth when their home planet was destroyed by an entity known as The End. Making themselves a new home on these islands, the Ancients rebuilt their civilization there. They also made several creations there, including temples, Vaults that locked the Chaos Emeralds up, a Cyber Space built to preserve their culture, and Portals to access this dimension. Additionally, the Ancients created various defenses, an array of weaponry, and an army of robots that included gargantuan machines fittingly known as Titans, to defend themselves in case The End traveled to Earth.

While the Ancients were seemingly able to live in peace for some time, The End eventually did arrive on Earth and attacked the Starfall Islands, killing many Ancients there. A couple of these people powered up four of their Titans with the Chaos Emeralds for a backup plan that consisted of the Ancients taking these Emeralds to the location of the Master Emerald. Four Ancients would volunteer to control the Titans, Giganto, Wyvern, Knight and Supreme, to face The End. The pilot of Supreme sacrificed themself to seal The End in that Titan, and the other Titans would seal themselves across the Starfall Islands. After this conflict, a group of Ancients fled to what would become Angel Island, and the remaining Ancients would die on the islands, their spirits being contained by the Koco that would inhabit the archipelago for tens of centuries.

Sonic Frontiers Prologue[]

Convergence[]

Divergence[]

In Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Divergence, Knuckles accidentally sent himself to Ares Island after discovering a Cyber Space Portal and an accompanying Portal Gear in Sky Sanctuary. After easily surviving an immediate ambush by some spawning Soldiers, Knuckles was then attacked by Sage and Asura, who trapped him in his Cyber Cage.

Sonic Frontiers[]

In Sonic Frontiers, Dr. Eggman discovered the Starfall Islands and their connection with the Ancients. Coveting this society's technology for his own use, the doctor set up camp on Kronos Island and began developing his operations, which included creating an AI codenamed "Sage" to help in his vile plan.[3] Meanwhile, Tails was doing some research on the Chaos Emeralds when he tracked them to the Starfall Islands, noticing that they were mysteriously gathering there.[4] After he and Sonic helped Amy destroy a horde of Badniks on a nearby island, they traveled to Kronos Island in the Tornado.[3] When they were approaching the landmass, however, an atmospheric charge caused the fox to lose control of the plane, and he and the two hedgehogs were sucked up by a wormhole that sent them to Cyber Space.

Fearing that Sonic might foil his plot, Eggman installed Sage into a drive and traveled through the Starfall Islands, where he put his drive into one of the Portals to activate it.[3] However, since he began being attacked by Ancient robots, Sage incidentally caused him to enter Cyber Space, where he found himself trapped with his AI and his Egg Mobile to survive. In the interim, Sonic miraculously escaped this hostile dimension and landed on Kronos Island, where he began a new adventure.

In The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic mentions his adventure on the Starfall Islands as his most recent adventure, and later on at the end of the game the final cutscene shows the Starfall Islands as well as what seems to be a diagram of Sonic and Giganto in the background on one of the monitors in Eggman's base.

Shadow Generations[]

Chaos Island is set to reappear in Shadow Generations.

Points of interest[]

Trivia[]

  • Each of the Starfall Islands is named for a figure in Ancient Greek mythology; fittingly, almost all of them are named for characters relating to the Titans.
    • Kronos was the youngest titan and the personification of time.
    • Ares was the god of war and a son of Zeus.
    • Chaos was the personification of the primordial void. The character Chaos shares this name origin.
    • Rhea was the wife of Kronos and a fertility goddess.
    • Ouranos was the father of the titans, including Kronos, and the personification of the heavens.
  • According to Morio Kishimoto, Kronos, Rhea, and Ouranos Island were designed as one large island, but were split during development after playtesters found the joined island "too big and boring."[5] As a result, Dr. Eggman's 5th and 7th Egg Memos describe only three Starfall Islands, contrary to the five named islands playable in the game.
    • Because of this, despite being named as different islands, Kronos Island and Rhea Island are a single landmass within the game's code. Kronos Island takes up the southernmost area and Rhea Island the northernmost, with various barriers both natural and invisible to prevent the player from wandering between them. Whether this means they are two names for the same island within the story of the game is unknown.
    • In The Final Horizon, Knuckles and Eggman count four islands, rather than five or three.[6][7]

Notes[]

  1. In his Egg Memos, Dr. Eggman says that the Ancients predate the Knuckles Clan, Black Arms and Babylonians. With the clan of echidnas being over 4,000 years old, this would imply that the Ancients settled on the Starfall Islands before that timeframe, possibly much earlier.
