I've been flipping back and forth between stories with Charley (monthly ranges) and those with Lucie (Eighth Doctor Adventures).
Although Lucie is a great companion and the EDA are much more similar to the current Doctor Who TV series in format and style, I have found that I much prefer the monthly range for now.
It seems a bit more light-hearted, episodes work better as standalone, and most importantly Charley and the Doctor make an amazing team. Charley is most comparable to Martha (my favorite modern companion), in my opinion, but without being hopelessly in love with the Doctor.
Like Martha, she is independent and smart, and always seems to catch on quickly and make good decisions. Though she does sometimes need to be rescued, she doesn't feel like a token 'damsel in distress'. I also love that she is not 'modern'. It gives her an interesting perspective.
That was a huge intro to this review. Haha. This episode was as good as anything on the show. The Doctor meets a man who claims to be his oldest enemy, someone who has watched him die after battling him through the years. The only problem is that the Doctor has never met him before.
This leads to the Doctor and Charley traveling back through various points in the history of Britain to find, battle, and ultimately beat this man. They also have to discover who is behind him.
This is a wonderful example of how great the audio adventures can be!...more

I've heard a few previously, and I absolutely love Paul McGann as the Doctor. This story was really quite good and creepy at times. It definitely felt like a fast-paced Moffat era style Who episode.
If you love Doctor Who, I would absolutely suggest heading to Audible and giving the Big Finish audios a listen. It's the next best thing to having the show!...more

Great Dalek story with a very serious moral quandary for the Doctor. This is what this show is supposed to be about! The only negatives I could find were a) this story is similar to the Series 8 episode 'Into the Dalek', and b) as good as Ace and the Doctor were, they could have been replaced by almost any companion/Doctor and the story would have still worked fine.
In other words, great Doctor Who story, but not stand out characterization. Didn't really matter though. This is one of the best Who stories I've ever read....more

I tend to blame it on multiple things: the writing, his horrible costume, and Peri.
Well, this story was missing two of those things. While the story isn't groundbreaking by any means, I thought it was fun. The Doctor was great, and Peri was...bearable. I can't imagine myself re-reading this one a whole lot, but it was enjoyable....more

After all, this is supposed to be a part of series of stories that each focuses on a different incarnation of the Doctor, and he barely even appears! It's basically a 'Doctor-Lite' episode from the Russell T Davies era. There were, however, two reasons I was okay with how it worked out:
One, the characters we did focus on were pretty good, and the story was interesting enough to keep my attention.
Two, because even though the Doctor and Nyssa were absent most of the time, when they did show up they were perfectly written. I like the Fifth Doctor a lot, but lets be honest- his run was all about his companions. He was a quiet idealist- he loved having a group of companions to adventure with. You get a good feel for that here....more

On the one hand, the Fourth Doctor is a fan favorite for a reason. He's odd but charming; always cheerful, but sometimes deadly serious. He is well represented by Phillip Reeve in this story.
On the other hand, during Baker's run the writers of Who felt they wanted to distance themselves a bit from being strictly a 'children's show', and started writing more episodes of the 'monster of the week' variety, which is what this story pays homage to. It's a weird story that can be quite icky at times, but the Doctor and Leela are so wonderful that's it's easy to look past. If you loved Doctor Who in the '70's, you will adore this short story.
*I also LOVED the 'cameo' of the 11th Doctor (much better than his reference in the First Doctor story)....more
