In many ways, 'Hidden' feels like a direct follow-up/answer to everything that happened in Book 4, 'Chosen'. And I enjoyed it all the more for that.

This is a simpler, streamlined story that does not waste time introducing too many new characters and instead delves deeply into Anne and Alex's relationship, as well as Alex's past with his former master, Richard Drach.
Anne has removed herself from Alex (and mage society in general) after the events at the end of Book 4, despite Alex's attempts to contact her and make amends. Alex is concerned for her security since she is alone, and those fears are soon proven accurate when Anne disappears.
The question is - who has taken her, and why? Only Alex can find out.

For better or worse - Harry Dresden, he is not.
That said, I must admit that I found the story a bit repetitive and tedious for stretches, so I dropped a star from the rating. In some ways, it felt like this was less of a full story and more of a vehicle for Benedict Jacka to show the readers Alex's tragic past.
But the ending was a fairly surprising cliffhanger, and I enjoy the world and characters enough to continue.
Alex Verus has so far been a solid, character-driven Urban Fantasy. Fans of Dresden Files or Sherlock will enjoy this. ...more

Initially I felt this “case of the week”, if you will, was pretty vanilla but even then the new characters and world-building introduced were really fun.
Then about 60% of the way into the story things got MUCH more exciting and I literally listened to the final 5 hours or so in a day. I was looking for any opportunity to turn it back on.
So yeah - this series is really good. If you are an Urban Fantasy or Dresden fan, check them out! ...more
Perhaps I was just in the mood for Urban Fantasy (it’s been about a decade since I binged Dresden Files), but I enjoyed this a lot.

I particularly liked Alex’s single ability (seeing into the short term future) and the way it affects his persona and the way lives his day to day life as a mage.
