"People of Red Rocket Rising, my fellow citizens. Our long night is over. I've been contacted by a benevolent people. They too have known great trials, but they have overcome them and made it their mission to help others do the same. They have offered us refuge, and passage to the nearest human worlds. They have the resources, and the patience and compassion, to evacuate every one of us. My fellow citizens, my friends, rescue is at hand!" Chronological Placement This story takes place after the 1996 Doctor Who TV Movie and after the Eight Doctor's adventures with Charley Pollard.
Steve Lyons is a science fiction writer, best known for writing television tie-ins of Doctor Who for BBC Books, and previously, Virgin. The earliest of these was Conundrum in 1994, and his most recent was 2005's The Stealers of Dreams. He has also written material for Star Trek tie-ins, as well as original work.
Finally, the eight doctor really begins. As Dr Who officianados know, the eight doctor is a bit of an anomaly. He had one single episode in the early nineties to try and restart the series. It wasn't the restart people were looking for and so just the one episode. However, he did have a life on radio and through audio books like this one. This is the first official audio series featuring the eight doctor and this is the first episode. As with all Big Finish audios, the story is well written, well produced and well acted. They are always a great car listen. Any kind of trip I like to put one of these in. If you are a Dr who fan, I recommend the entire catalog and if you want to know how Dr 8 lived=, here is where you start.
This was the first 8th doctor audiobook I ever listened to, it’s not the best and I don’t like Lucie Miller but hey, it’s still good.
I gotta day, I love Mcgann. He has lines like this. “Spill the beans Lucy Miller.” His voice sounds slightly like Snape’s but softer and gentler. And when she doesn’t say more then a single sentence. The doctor, in the exact same type of voice as before. “More beans please.” And lines like, “they are. But there’s nothing I can do right now to keep the lambs out of the wolves den.” Good story too. Looking forward to pt 2 man do I love Mcgann. I really wish he had gotten more screen time. He was amazing but he could have been better if he had just gotten his chance. At least we’ve got the audio books though.
Pretty awesome intro to the next series of 8th Doctor adventures, this time featuring companion Lucie Miller, who pops up on the TARDIS as part of a witness protection program. The Time Lords not only make it impossible for the Doctor to return Lucie to her proper time and place, but make the TARDIS inoperable without her.
But that's just the set-up for this year's arc. This particular two-part story sends the Doctor down to a planet on the brink of geological disaster. But the citizens' distress calls have been answered by a seemingly benevolent group of aliens -- the Daleks.
I had a little difficulty distinguishing between the voices of the two female characters featured in the plot (other than Lucie) and this led to some confusion, but it sorts itself out eventually when they're no longer in the same scenes together.
Lucie makes a great foil for the Doctor -- they have good chemistry, based on mutual loathing. Of course, we know that eventually they'll come to depend on one another, but for now, part of the fun is watching the sparks fly.
Been listening to this whilst doing chores around the house. Haven't listened to it in a while but it was so good to hear Lucie and Eight together again! Forgot how good their dynamic with each other was, and how Lucie first met the Doctor.
Now I'm going to have to try and stick to my relisten..
I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure. As much as I loved Charley, I love Lucie just as much; she's so sassy and brash. It was interesting to see someone sympathizing with and victimizing of the Daleks.
I think this is my first 8th doctor audio cd, this is a short story maybe lasting an hour. The first thing I noticed was the new theme and I really like it. I love the daleks and was excited about the 8th doctor encountering them, so Lucie Miller played by Sheridan Smith is a northern character who the Timelords have put into witness protection is an unwilling passenger in the Tardis and they end up on a planet called Red Rocket Rising. Acting president Eileen Klint has done a deal with the Daleks. I don't really want to spoil it so go and listen to it.

Eighth Doctor audioplays are my favorite from Big Finish. The production quality is top notch, and Paul McGann commits to the role completely. This story introduces Lucy in a rather explosive way, and she and 8 clash for most of this first installment. As most Dalek stories go, I'm invested, and can't wait to see what happens in the second half and how the Doctor triumphs over them on the planet Red Rocket Rising. Side note, the version I listened to has an interview at the end with Sheridan and McGann, which is a nice little 'behind the scenes' glimpse.
I'm going to cover part one and two all at once, since I listened them together. This was my first Big Finish audio book. I was pleasantly surprised by the production quality, as I'd always thought these were just someone reading the book out loud (like other audio books I'd tried).
Ad far as the story itself goes, it was a typical Doctor Who style story. No real surprises and on par with the quality I'd expect. Paul McGann did a fantastic job, and I was able to picture him in costume and in character as he spoke. For that matter, all of the actors did a great job.
This was a nice quick audio book, and I'll definitely be listening to more.
This is hard for me to review as I'm only just getting started on both the audio-books & the audio-dramas of the Eighth Doctor. Further this is not a self-contained story, but the first part of a larger arc. It's an interesting set up with a new companion with a mysterious past and lots of interesting characterization to play with. Certainly looking forward to the conclusion.
Came into this hoping for something reasonably entertaining, a little Hayley Atwell, and the Doctor I remember from that gloriously awful movie. By the end I forgot Hayley Atwell was a primary character here, I was so engrossed in the story. reallllly looking forward to listening to part 2.
Another bone chilling Dalek Story but in an audio format.
Incredible, absolutely incredible. Why does Doctor Who media outside of the show rock with Dalek Stories. This is my first big finish story and I am absolutely blown away. The atmosphere is immersive to the point you can visualise the story happening in your head on TV. The Daleks don't appear to the later half of the story but they are sinister and cold from the moment they appear. A spoiler villian is also very interesting and well built up. The Doctor is also written in complex layers and super fun.
I'll start with the negatives first. On it's own this story is just a two part build up. A lot of the mysterious build up was done well but I felt like the cliffhanger came way too quickly just as we found out what was going on. I felt like this episode was just spooky set up and world building. As a two parter chefs kiss but on its own more mystery than adventure. Its pacing is also way too quick with a dramatic beginning that I wish was developed on further before going straight into the action.
Secondly I think The Doctor and reluctant companion worked far better with Ten and Donna. Eight and Lucie are just down right nasty to each other. We know that Eight does not think of the time lords kindly but it just feels out of character to lash out at an innocent human. The Doctor lacks his empathy as well as Lucie. Without spoilers their arguments just fit into so many clichés I'm bored of. I hope later in this season their dynamic makes things less sour.
Other than that I really enjoyed it, I have so many positives so I'm just gonna stick to three main ones.
First the performances were absolutely phenomenal. Everyone stood out from Anita Dobson potraying a foolish but desperate Acting President to Kenneth Cranham as a paranoid tin hat alien hater. The whole cast manages to shine and create an atmospheric and well edited audio drama. Due to the high quality of all the casts performances it generally felt like I was visually watching a full length episode of the show. Everyone manages to sell their performances without performing to a camera. No one else more than Sheridan Smith and Paul MacGann. Sheridan brings a lot of personality to Lucie and thanks to her expressive voice performance, I'm sold or her sassiness and fearless courage. Paul MacGann was done dirty I'm so glad he got a second chance with Big Finish. He brings a lot of personality to the Doctor, his portrayal of Eight is more hardened here and he fits the bill of a Tired but Wise Old Sage. He manages to show The Doctors old age but also his compassionate nature when it comes to protecting people.
Another positive is the world building. Lyons manages to immerse us into the world of Red Rocket Rising perfectly. He's managed to do something that should be almost impossible, build and develop the world of Red Rocket Rising without it being described to us. One of my biggest concerns about Big Finish is that world building would suck in audio form but I was completely wrong. Lyon through the characters let's us understand how much of a post apocalyptic nightmare the planet has come justifying why Acting President Klint would do anything to help her people escape. Without visually seeing the planet Lyon manages to make the listener sympathise with the people of Red Rocket Rising.
Finally the atmosphere. I love how Mystery is steeped through the story for example the deal with Lucie as well as Dr Martez's dark and inhuman experiments. Mystery is at the core of the story and I love how the further we go along the more sinister and heartbreaking it gets. I also like how it all comes crashing down at the terrifying and genuis twist at the end. The Daleks being "nice" is a super overused trope but its very good at making things very sinister and immersive. The atmosphere with the way its done makes me as the listener feel as if I'm there. Hope this continues in the next part.
Overall a brilliant story that has made me eager to listen to more of Eights stories and Big Finish overall. Highly recommend. If your worried about pricing, some of big finishes stories are now officially free on Spotify.
#langolobigfinish L'ANGOLO BIG FINISH: “BLOOD OF THE DALEKS” (The Eighth Doctor Adventures 1.1/1.2)
Scritto da STEVE LYONS. Con PAUL McGANN, SHERIDAN SMITH, ANITA DOBSON, KENNETH CRANHAM, HAYLEY ATWELL e NICHOLAS BRIGGS as The Daleks.
This is a fun start to a series of the Eighth Doctor's adventures, which apparently aren't actually the immediate follow up to his introduction in the TV movie. It seems there are plenty of previous adventures for Eight from Big Finish, not to mention the Eighth Doctor Adventure novels, which I believe the audio materials ignore completely. However, this is a good jumping on point as far as I can tell, beginning with the Doctor picking up a new companion in his TARDIS, and then crashing on a human colony world. Well, technically, the companion just sort of appears, and eventually it's revealed that the Time Lords have foisted her on Eight for reasons as yet unclear. It's an interesting mix of the Classic and modern series, as Time Lord interference was common for the older Doctors, while a companion who appears unexpectedly on the TARDIS has obvious parallels to Donna's first appearance. The resemblance is even clearer given that Lucie is, in many ways, an amalgamation of Rose and Donna. At least, that's how she felt like to me. I'm not entirely opposed to that, as it seems like she'll be a fun character, even if I'd rather just have Donna in spite of the obvious licensing impossibilities that prevented that back in 2006.
The actual story is a nice intro, involving the Daleks and a human colony world an ambiguous time in the future. The colony world has been struck by an asteroid, though fortunately there are some survivors of the impact. Unfortunately for them, there are no ships left to escape on, since what exodus options were available were used by the rich and powerful, and currently the skies are dark and filled with deadly acid rain. The Doctor and his new companion wander into this situation, hoping to leave again, especially as Eight wants to just drop Lucie home. However, thanks to run ins with criminals and a conspiracy nut, things aren't quite so easy, and when it turns out the colony president has called on the Daleks to save the humans, Eight will have to do what he can to save everyone from a terrible mistake. Of course, there's a nice plot twist with a mad scientist at the end, and an okay if cliche cliffhanger to lead in to part two.
This was a fun story, though it's hard to completely judge until I listen to Part 2, which I'll be sure to do so. I kinda like Lucie as a new companion even if so far she seems a bit derivative of RTD era companions, as the hook about her being in Time Lord Witness Protection has the potential to go in interesting directions. I'll definitely keep going with Eight's audio adventures, as Paul McGann is clearly having fun, though I kinda feel like between this and the first of the EDA novels, I liked the novels better (and I really need to get back and read some more of those).
This is the first of the 8th Doctor Adventures and introduces Lucie Miller (Sheridan Smith) one of the greatest companions ever. I love the unusual way she appears too - she's witnessed something (but she can't remember what) and The Time Lords manifest her into the Doctor's Tardis as a sort of witness protection. We've had the Time Lords providing companions before - Romana (I) and this can be quite a nice dynamic because it provides a clued up foil to the Doctor - not just some wide-eyed everyman marvelling at all the weird and wonderful - Lucie Miller's a nice fusion of the two, slightly clued up but still human enough to wonder at everything, which gives the audience a point of connection.
In this story they land on a post apocalyptic planet where the last survivors are desperate to leave but all the exodus ships have left filled with all the upper classes. The Daleks hear their distress call and offer their services....
The voice-cast on this is top notch. McGann/Sheridan Smith are superb together but the rest of the voice cast includes Anita Dobson, Kenneth Cranham and Haley Atwell (Marvel MCU's Agent Carter) and Nicholas Briggs doing the Daleks - What a line up!
So, my first Doctor Who audiobook. Didn't start off with a Doctor I was familiar with but I did start off with an enemy I was familiar with. The Daleks at one point call the Doctor a "terrorist" of the Daleks and I smiled when I heard that because obviously terrorist becomes predator later. Makes sense. It was a pretty decent place to start and there are enough throwbacks to Genesis of the Daleks (which I have seen and I love that storyline) that despite the fact that this was audio, I was able to keep track of what was happening. The Doctor has a companion show up in the TARDIS a la Donna Noble and the companion proceeds to grump at the Doctor a la Ian Chesterton for landing her on an alien planet that doesn't even have two suns. They promptly get separated and what proceeds is the uncovering of what exactly happened and what is currently happening and then Daleks get tossed into the mix. This is all a very standard Doctor Who formula. My favorite part about this is that there is an actual tin foil hat guy. Also, dramatized audiobooks are bomb diggity. What will the Doctor do next? How will he solve the very large Dalek shaped problem?
I've started to get into Big Finish Doctor Who audio dramas to quench my thirst of Doctor Who that the show is currently failing to quench. This story with the 8th doctor (Paul McGann) introduces a new companion named Lucy (who sounds remarkably like Jodie Whitaker) in a clever story about a planet that is on the verge of destruction when the Daleks show up and offer to save them. The doctor being the lone voice in knowing the Daleks true nature, attempts to warn them. This is really only half a story so I'll reserve judgements until I listen to part 2. However this story is well put together. I was engaged the entire time and it keeps you guessing, Paul McGann proves to be a great doctor who was robbed of more screen time. You'd think in this day and age, someone would have proposed a spin off limited series that shows his adventures leading up to the Time War. See you in Part 2!
i gave up on neverland and zagreus i was just too confused and if i'm not enjoying them what's the point. so moving on to eight and his next companion (i know there are more charley adventures and i really want to listen to scherzo but that's it for freebies on spotify and i don't enjoy these enough to spend actual money on them)
this was fine! nothing spectacular but decent plot, interesting to have a companion from 2006 when that overlaps with the revival of the show but there weren't any references... also hayley atwell was in this. so thats a plus. i should probably watch the eighth doctor movie one of these days huh.
i just really want new doctor who ok when does season 11 come out
This is the first radio production for the 8th Doctor voiced by Paul McGann. The Doctor acquires a companion in Lucie Miller, voiced by Sheridan Smith. She appears on the TARDIS and seems to know a lot more than she is saying. They end up on a human colony that has been affected by an astroid impact. Struggling through a "nuclear like" winter, the colony is led by Acting President Eileen Klint, voiced by Anita Dobson. (Keen eyed Whovians may have spotted Anita somewhere else in the more reason series.) Desperate for salvation, the colony looks ready to accept the help of the Daleks. Can the Doctor do something?
It was well paced and easy to visualise. The one big problem is that it's supposed to be really cold but no one acts cold. Other than that, it was ok.
After a friend recommending it for a while, I'm finally starting Doctor Who Audio! While there wasn't much of the Time Lords in this one, it was still fun to see a little bit of how they complicated the Doctor's life before the Time War. Lucie is the best, most ungrateful witness in protection, and I am enjoying the 8th Doctor's personality. This is what I've been missing in Doctor Who television recently. Looking forward to more audio.
This one was really good! It can be interesting seeing (or in this case, hearing) The Doctor try to convince people unfamiliar with the Daleks that they are evil. The Doctor even says he wishes that even just one Dalek could show pity, which is strange given the hindsight of episodes from the show's revival like "Dalek" and "The Witch's Familiar."
Really impressive opening!! It definitely got stronger in the second half but this whole story (so far, I suppose) was snappy and dramatic. I’m excited to see how this story concludes, and for how the Doctor and Lucie’s adventures will continue in part two!
I’ll save my full review for the second part, but thus far I’m highly entertained.
My daughter, an avid Doctor Who fan, introduced me to the audio presentations by Big Finish Productions. These are full cast productions that tell a story entirely as dialogue. Paul McGann does a great job as the (usually overlooked) Eighth Doctor.
Meh. The Daleks are so overdone. I understand wanting the 8th Doctor to face them as well, but it's just getting tedious. Excellent performances, but lackluster story.
