The story of Rose Walker (the Vortex) was confusing at first, but came to a great conclusion, and was used to grow the character of Morpheus to great effect.
Much like Preludes and Nocturnes, there was one chapter specifically that I thought was better than all the rest, and that was #13 'Men of Good Fortune'. It's a step away from Rose's story, and portrays Morpheus and Death making a deal with Hob Gadling in the 14th century and making him immortal. I won't say any more, but it was amazing.
Overall, really enjoying this and excited for Volume 3!...more
Four seemingly separate and unrelated stories, but they were all fantastic, so I give 5 Stars overall. "Calliope": A story nearly as disturbing as the 'Cereal Convention', but beautifully written and introducing some interesting concepts - including the triumvirate of witches/fates/etc that Neil uses in later works (Most notably in 'Ocean at the End of the Lane'). 4/5 Stars
"A Dream of a Thousand Cats": I LOVED this story and overall concept. That's all I will say. It was wonderful. 5/5 Stars
"A Midsummer Night's Dream": Also loved this one, mainly for the beautiful writing and INCREDIBLE artwork. Sadly, I am unfamiliar with most of Shakespeare's work and so I'm sure I missed most of the subtlety in this story. But I do love Shakespeare's role in Sandman so far. 5/5 Stars
"Facade": Probably the strangest story in this set (though not the strangest in Sandman so far), it took me a while to figure out what was going on (especially because I was unfamiliar with Element Girl as a DC Character). Wow was it an amazing story, though. Morpheus was certainly missed, but I always love it when Death appears and gets philosophical. 5/5 Stars...more

But Gaiman is arguably my favorite living writer, and the writing here is fantastic, so once I got used to the medium I was pretty much all in.
The story was pretty solid - I was typically more invested in the conversations and musings of Dream than I was of the journeys, battles, and trippier aspects of the story.
As such, my favorite chapter was by far the final one - when Dream and Death discuss Dream's journey so far. That was incredible stuff - and if it is in any way a reliable precursor of what is to come I am incredibly excited....more
