But of course not, Johnny. What ever gave you that idea?
―Telling Johnny about the great Idea

Sally is a character who was featured in the 1946 Disney film, Song of the South.

Background[]

Sally is shown to live with her husband John, her mother Doshy, and her son Johnny. She shows a motherly personality whenever she takes care of her son on occasions like when Johnny must wear a formal suit for his father's mother who is going for a visit. However, when she approaches Uncle Remus, she misunderstood Johnny for giving him a bad influence into listening to his Briar Patch stories. However, after Johnny was struck by a bull in patch of grass, she felt worried of what happened to him. Later, Uncle Remus came and told a story of Br'er Rabbit and the Laughing Place to Johnny, who suddenly regains his conscience, showing that Miss Sally misunderstood Uncle Remus in the first place and understands he is a good influence to her son.

Role in the film[]

Sally is first seen sitting on a carriage on their way to Grandma Doshy's house where she explains to her son Johnny that they will come for a visit, which she thinks that his grandmother would be proud of seeing him. She and her family approach Mrs. Doshy happy to see her daughter and son together. Just as Johnny enters, John tells his wife knowing if he would stay here which Sally tells her husband that she must stay with her mother which he replies that her mother should be the one to take care of Johnny. John then approaches his mother telling him if his wife should stay with her, which Johnny approaches his father who has a train to catch up, because he has a job to do. John then bids a farewell to his family while Sally then notices her husband leaving for a job. Later when Johnny returns home after listening to a story by Uncle Remus, she then tells her son that it is past bedtime just as she takes her son for bed.

The next day, Mrs. Sally wakes up her son, Johnny, as she prepares a suit for him to get ready for his father's mother who is going to visit them, telling Johnny to do frog catching another day just before Johnny approaches Toby outside. She then appears again overhearing the conversation between Joe and Jake discussing with Uncle Remus and after the two walk away, Sally approaches Uncle Remus and becomes concerned that the stories are becoming a bad influence on Johnny. Later at home, Sally discusses with her mother telling her that without Uncle Remus and his stories, Johnny would be utterly desolate, discussing about Johnny who must have friends, trying to give her daughter common sense which as her grandson arrives, she discusses with her mother that he is excited about his birthday for next Tuesday planning for a birthday party. Later at Johnny's birthday, Mrs. Sally is seen setting up a feast while she notices her son planning to invite Ginny for the party. However, seeing that her son is not present during his the party, she then approaches Uncle Remus who asks him to not spend any more time with Johnny; saddened by the misunderstanding of his good intentions, he decides to leave for Atlanta.

Furthermore, Johnny asks his mother to know where Uncle Remus went which his mother tries to claim it was her fault, which Toby warns Sally that Uncle Remus has left just as Johnny tries to catch up with him, he suddenly enters the bull's pen, unaware that the bull is there which he furiously attacks him while Sally notices this only to be hit by the bull. Sally worriedly takes her son home to make sure he is safe. That night, Johnny is taken to bed and ends up crying for Uncle Remus to come back and as his parents look at him lying in bed, Johnny's grandmother just as Uncle Remus tells a tale of Br'er Rabbit and the Laughing Place, and the boy pulls through, regaining his conscience. Seeing their son alive, Johnny happily reunites with his parents, planning to have a laughing place just like Br'er Rabbit, making Uncle Remus happy once again.
