The NDIS Amendment (Getting the NDIS Back on Track No. 1) Bill 2024 has raised significant concerns for CYDA and other Disability Representative Organisations (DROs). The Bill fails to adequately address vital recommendations from the NDIS Review or include people with disability through meaningful co-design. It has the potential to increase the difficulty involved in accessing support and to disproportionately affect individuals who lack support networks through expanded powers granted to the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). This joint submission explores how the proposed changes could hinder access to essential services. What's needed is a revised approach that integrates the voices of those directly impacted to create a fair, effective, and sustainable NDIS. Devinder Singh, B.Eng, MBA. is the moderator of this panel discussion, and Drew Beswick is one of the panelist who discusses, his extensive experience across states and housing, delving into the complex ecosystem of supports and the challenges of dealing with multiple government departments. They address a critical question regarding whether the term "NDIS" (National Disability Insurance Scheme) is a panacea for all issues. He highlights unintended consequences, noting a retreat from regular services in various sectors like health, justice, and mental health. The NDIS, intended as a supplement, has become the primary source of support for many, contrary to initial intentions. They also discuss foundational supports available to everyone with a disability, whether or not they become NDIS participants. The structural changes mentioned are deemed crucial for fostering inclusivity and ending segregation, aligning with the aspirations of the Disability Royal Commission (DRC). He recognizes the political complexities involved, emphasizing the necessity for collaboration between the Commonwealth and the States. The varied bilateral arrangements, phasings, and timelines across different jurisdictions require a collective resolve to advance the inclusive agenda. Today’s announcement by Minister for the NDIS, Bill Shorten, on the new legislation and major reforms to the National Disability Insurance (NDIS) marks a pivotal moment for the disability community. As WDA calls for genuine co-design, it's crucial we all lean in and listen closely. The concerns raised by PWDA President Marayke Jonkers resonate deeply. The sustainability and viability of the NDIS are not just policy issues; they are about real lives, real needs, and the ability to participate fully in our communities. People with disabilities and NDIS participants are rightfully concerned about how these reforms will impact their lives and the supports crucial for their day-to-day activities. As we move forward, engaging in the consultation process is more important than ever. It’s about ensuring that the voices of those most affected are not just heard but are influential in shaping the outcomes of these reforms. If you have feedback, concerns, or questions about the NDIS reform announcement, I encourage you to reach out to PWDA. Your input is invaluable in making sure the NDIS continues to serve the needs of its community effectively. Let's stand together to ensure these changes reflect our collective aim for a more inclusive, supportive, and accessible future. #NDISReform #DisabilityRights #InclusivePolicy #CommunityVoice

Our lives depend on it. People with disability and NDIS participants are worried about what these changes will mean for their lives and the supports we rely on to fully participate in the community. We will be analysing the proposed legislation in full and using the upcoming consultation process to represent the views of our members and the disability community. The #NDIA #NDIS should employ people with disabilities that have abilities and use the services of disability owned businesses; because it is the people with disabilities that know what works and what does not for people with disabilities. #disabilitysupport #disabilityadvocate
