Children with developmental delay and disability under 9 should get the supports they need, whether they are NDIS participants or not. But what should additional Foundational Supports look like? There’s still time to have your say as a parent or caregiver at the Department of Social Services (DSS)’ upcoming online workshops. The first session in NSW kicks off tonight from 7pm AEDT – but there’ll be events for every state and territory until Thursday, 28 November. "The government cannot sweep this national shame under the rug," said ACOSS Australian Council of Social Service CEO Dr Cassandra Goldie AO. "It has a duty to ensure Australia's social security provides people with enough to cover essentials, including the extra costs that disability brings, and are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve." Last week, the Australian Governmentreleased its official response to a Senate Inquiry report into the Disability Support Pension. Today, we join People with Disability Australia (PWDA), ACOSS Australian Council of Social Service, and disability advocacy bodies in expressing alarm at the Government’s dismissal of the report’s vital recommendations. Urgent action is needed to prevent young people with disability from becoming trapped in cycles of poverty, inequality, and reduced independence.
