Chelsea is building her career skills 🔨 In her final school years, Chelsea accessed employment assistance to help her transition to work. Chelsea is now crafting her woodworking skills with her sights set on a career in cabinet making. Quietly spoken, Chelsea said she enjoys woodwork, and she developed an interest in it at school. ‘There’s something about the smell of wood and the feel of it. I really love learning how to make different things from it.’ At the Woodcraft Hub, Chelsea is also supported to learn to manage other vital workplace tasks. 'Once a month I'm rostered on to open up the hub,' she said. 'I go in, turn everything on, count the float and go outside to check the 2 dust collector bags from the ventilation system and replace the bags if they are full. I also greet customers, tell them about all the stock we sell and help them with any purchases.' 'Doing all these extra tasks is helping me to build my skills and confidence. Then I'll be able to look at doing a TAFE pre-apprenticeship course in cabinet making or even start to apply for cabinet making apprenticeships.' Colombian-born, 40-year-old Santi from Perth was diagnosed with limb girdle muscular dystrophy 2A in 2014, and his condition is slowly weakening the muscles in his hips, shoulders and arms. It impacts his mobility and makes it harder for him to do regular everyday tasks. Simple things like walking, showering, dressing, preparing meals and doing his own washing has become difficult, taking away more time in his day. Grateful to live in Australia and have access to a life-changing NDIS, Santi said so many aspects of his life have improved. ‘The NDIS has meant a lot to me. Since I’ve been part of it, many aspects of my life have changed. Now I have access to do things I never believed I could’.
