I am great fan of the W3C Accessibility Model and similar models. The strength of the W3C model is it can be used for more than ‘accessibility.’ It can used to measure and grow disability inclusive workplaces and Disability Inclusion Action Plans. The W3C model is built upon the recognition that different parts of an organisation impact on the culture and capacity to deliver disability inclusive and accessible experiences. It provides a clear consistent way to measure, and document organisational, cultural as well as technical capabilities. Not only does it provide the data to make informed decisions, it also provides actionable guides for establishing and/or improving policies, employee-communication, training, and tools. If you have people with disabilities in your organization... include them! Include them in: - Creating accessibility policies and practices - Reviewing digital projects for accessibility - Reviewing new office layout plans - Testing software Why? Because if you don't have a visual disability... reviewing policies and accessibility from that perspective is impossible. You will need to rely on mechanical AI testing, which is not the same as a real person. Because if you aren't neurodiverse... how are you going to know if your "neurodiverse hiring program" is going to help people who are neurodiverse? Because if you are not Dyslexic or Colour Blind... how are you going to know if something can be read easily by someone with Dyslexia? or can be perceived by someone with colour blindness? Because if you don't use a wheelchair... how are you truly going to know if something can be easily accessed by someone who uses a wheelchair? If you have these people in your organization... celebrate and include them! Want to increase inclusion at your organization... include them! It's simple... #CoDesign according to the #NDIA #NDIS Doesn't look like #CoDesign. No mention of #UNCRPD in *OUR* (ie #NDIA's) #CoDesign principles. A little hint: the #UNCRPD is *THE* design determinant. #CoDesign *CAN'T* happen without explicit commitment to #UNCRPD. Explains why the #NDIS Bill breaches #HumanRights The #CoDesign Advisory Group - which "provides strategic advice to the NDIA on the implementation of co-design and engagement processes in the disability community" -  hasn't met in 9 months. When I was preparing for the #CPACC exam, I was super curious what others' experiences were and how they approached the exam. That's why now, that I am "on the other side" and have finally taken (and passed 🎉) the exam, I wanted to share my journey. It's definitely been a bit of a roller coaster ride, I was so nervous before taking the exam, you wouldn't believe it 🙈 But it all turned out for the best, I passed with 704 out of 800 points and am now officially a Certified Professional for Accessibility Core Competencies 🤓 Are you studying for CPACC? This article provides a helpful summary of the changes to Section 504 and the ADA and when these new updates will come into effect. The biggest change is that these laws are adopting the WCAG 2.1 AA standard. This is a great article by Eric Eggert on why accessibility audits are inefficient, time consuming, and expend more resources. This is because accessibility audits are part of a reactive approach that focuses on fixing issues after the webpage, app, or course is created. It is much easier and efficient to be proactive and make accessibility a priority from the start.
