If you like Mariana Enríquez's work, particularly The Dangers of Smoking in Bed, you might enjoy this. Unfortunately, I find these stories too disjointed to leave an impression. They have tons of disgusting imagery but offer nothing beyond that.

The violence and gore are balanced out by the humor so it never feels like too much. The leads are charming and have a fun dynamic. On top of that, I love how sketchy Hayashida's art gets. Excited to see how the story will go....more

It revolves around Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, a man who's born with a great sense of smell but no scent of his own. Through the course of the book, we follow where his obsession takes him, from an apprenticeship in Paris to creating his magnum opus in the French countryside. At its core, Perfume is about an artist who's consumed by the need to create only to get no satisfaction out of his work. Süskind's writing is descriptive without being excessive, full of dark humor that made me burst out laughing. It's unafraid of being weird and it's amazing....more

Despite its reputation asIn The Haunting of Hill House, Dr. Montague recruits a group of people for an experiment in the potentially haunted mansion. Despite its reputation as a horror classic, it's more of a psychological thriller. Whether the house is actually haunted or not is hard to say, since Eleanor is an unreliable narrator and has a downward spiral over the course of the book. The rest of the cast never gets fleshed out. Through their banter, we get a vague idea of what they're like but nothing else. One thing that I did like about the book are its heavy lesbian undertones, which are really well done and took me by surprise considering the time it was written in. While I appreciate this book for what it is, I would've liked it more if I went in with the right expectations. I'm still excited to read We Have Always Lived in the Castle and hopefully will like that more....more
