Lah (ラー ?)[1] is a character that appear in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. She is a female ghost who lives in a Haunted Mansion, along with Su and Uh, who constantly try to win her affections and outdo each other by photographing the terrified faces of people they have scared.

Appearance[]

Lah's profile from Ghost Tale.

Lah is a beautiful female ghost with lavender hair and two sections in the front held by golden rings. She also has what appears to be a lotus flower in her hair, sitting on the right side of her head. Her eyes are light blue and slightly upturned with a single defined eyelash on each upper lid. Her make-up consists of pink eyeshadow and a heart under her left eye.

In addition to her appearance, her outfit has two notable sections. In Sonic: Night of the Werehog, it started as a deep pink and moved to a much lighter shade. The top was a sleeveless "sweetheart" with white frills around the edge. The skirt was semi-transparent, layered, and tied by her back. She also had two golden bracelets on her right arm, and an additional ring at the end of her tail, which sported a pink bow.

However, in Ghost Tale, her design included two gold rings around her neck, a ring on her right middle finger, and golden armbands with semi-transparent frills attached. The armbands had designs imprinted in the gold and her model also had sparkles, most notably in her hair and dress.

History[]

Past[]

It's unknown to what happened to her and how she became a ghost.

Sonic: Night of the Werehog[]

Lah 67

Lah, from Sonic: Night of the Werehog.

When Sonic the Hedgehog and Chip visited the house, Su and Uh easily scared Chip and took his picture multiple times, but Lah was dismayed when she saw that they hadn't taken any pictures of Sonic being scared although they had gotten some pictures of him holding a book, yawning and making a silly face at the camera with all three poses. This led Su and Uh to step up their attempts to scare Sonic. However, this only resulted in Sonic transforming into his Werehog form, and Su and Uh accidentally took some pictures of themselves getting scared by Sonic the Werehog. Lah laughed her head off at these new pictures, but as soon as she saw Sonic as a Werehog, she fell in love with him.

The following morning, while Su and Uh kept Chip tied up on a chair in the house, Lah took Chip's form (although she still bore a heart-shaped mark on her face, even disguised as Chip) and followed Sonic outside. As Chip, she convinced Sonic to agree to taking a picture of the two of them together, but when the picture was taken it showed her true form, hugging Sonic's neck. The final scene was Sonic and the ghost leaving together.

Ghost Tale[]

Su and Uh were trying to impress Lah by telekinetically lifting objects in the Haunted Mansion.

IDW Publishing[]

Lah, Su, & Uh (IDW, sewer cameo)

Lah, Su and Uh, from Sonic the Hedgehog #63.

One day, while lurking the sewers of Spagonia, Lah, Su, and Uh witnessed Sonic and Blaze running through, with Lah looking on lovingly at the hedgehog.[2]

Personality[]

Lah is a childish, humorous, selfish, spoiled and entitled ghost who is used to getting what she wants and acts irritated when she does not get her way. She is also somewhat manipulative and is always willing to take advantage of men by using her feminine wiles, such as using Su and Uh's feelings for her to get them to give her whatever she wants.

Lah possesses a very strange sense of humor, thinking that people making scared faces are funny. She also laughed hysterically at Su and Uh after they tried to scare Sonic and ended up getting scared by him, showing that she has a lack of empathy and does not care about other people's feelings.

She also loves to watch monster movies, especially ones about werewolves. Her love of werewolves is so great that she immediately fell in love with Sonic when she saw him in his Werehog form. Lah was even willing to have Chip kidnapped and kept in her house against his will so she could take his place and be with Sonic, proving herself to be very immoral and selfish.

In Ghost Tale, however, she shows a kinder side to her, as she is shown being quite friendly to the Baby Ghosts. She is also interested in being capable of doing things that are similar to Su and Uh and becomes sad when she is not able to do so, which ultimately shows that despite being spoiled, Lah does have a sweet side.

Powers and abilities[]

As a ghost, Lah is capable of flight, and shapeshifting into other people.

Weaknesses[]

When Lah shapeshifts into another person, she retains the pink heart-shaped mark on her cheek and her voice remains the same. Additionally, she still appears in her true form in photographs.

She is also incapable of lifting things on her own.

Relationships[]

Su and Uh[]

Su and Uh live together with Lah in a haunted mansion that presumably belonged to her before she died. The two male ghosts compete for her affections, and she uses their rivalry to her advantage, having them do her bidding. Despite this, she doesn’t seem to reciprocate any genuine feelings for either outside of fueling the ghosts’ competitions.

Marza’s staff twitter posts illustrations of the three ghosts hanging out, doing various activities. They seem to be good friends when the competition is put aside.

Sonic the Hedgehog[]

In Sonic: Night of the Werehog, Lah is upset by Sonic the Hedgehog’s lack of fear, further mocked by silly photos. Though after Su and Uh’s failed attempt to scare and even fight him, she is immediately infatuated upon seeing a photograph of Sonic’s Werehog form. This leads to her kidnapping Chip and shapeshifting into him in order to get a picture with Sonic, the short closing with her leaving with him.

In a deleted scene, it shows Sonic turning back from his werehog form and Lah being so shocked and disappointed that she slaps him before storming off. Implying she was unaware that Sonic was the Werehog.

The Marza Staff Twitter posted illustrations following the ghosts after the time of the short, including interactions with Sonic where they appear to be friends. It is unknown how canon these illustrations are.[1]

Later, in IDW Sonic the Hedgehog #63, it shows Lah once again infatuated with Sonic, but in his non-Werehog form.

Chip[]

Lah generally has no specific opinions of Chip. She perhaps enjoyed seeing Chip's frightened faces more than any other individual Su and Uh had scared previously, as she kept receiving dozens of photos of him. At the end of Sonic: Night of the Werehog, she, Su, and Uh, temporally tied Chip up so Lah could transform into him to share a picture with Sonic's Werehog form.

In other media[]

Archie Comics[]

In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics, Lah makes a cameo appearance in the variant cover of Sonic the Hedgehog #281.

Trivia[]

  • In initial story board concepts, Lah was not intended to be a featured character in Sonic: Night of the Werehog. Instead, a third male ghost would have led two other ghosts violently antagonizing Sonic the Hedgehog for just the sake of it. Lah's creation and her own desires led to Su and Uh's motivations within the short becoming much more sympathetic than the outright maliciousness nature of the ghosts presented in the original storyboard concepts.
  • In some concept art for Ghost Tale, there is often a ghost cat appearing next to Lah.
  • Based on photographs in the background of Sonic: Night of the Werehog, Lah had brown hair and a different dress before she died.
  • According to Ian Flynn, using Lah apart of cameos is complicated due that she is actually owned by Marza and not SEGA.[3]
