Central City (セントラルシティ Sentoraru Shiti?) is a location that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is the capital city of the United Federation.[1]

History[]

Sonic Adventure 2[]

Central City makes its first appearance, albeit unnamed, in Sonic Adventure 2 simply being referred to as the "capital city".[2] After Sonic is taken into custody by Guardian Units of Nations, they are transporting him to Prison Island in one of their aircraft, only for Sonic to incapacitate the rest of the people on-board, which is confirmed via radio chatter between the pilot and the Control Tower. Afterwards, Sonic escapes, hanging onto the plane's rope ladder at the back, as the pilot attempts to call him back to his spot. Sonic does a somersault onto the top of the plane, where he rips a metal sheet off of the plane's right wing, as he plummets down to the city, using it as a makeshift snowboard. At night, Sonic encounters a robot that is being manned by a G.U.N officer, whose mission is to put Sonic back into custody.

Adjacent to City Escape at night, Shadow the Hedgehog is seen standing on top of a bridge, as police surround the area, in an attempt to take him into custody for stealing the green Chaos Emerald. Shadow comments how the humans are the equivalent to "worthless junk piles" to him, before closing his eyes and having a flashback to 50 years ago, where Maria is on the Space Colony ARK, as she pushes a button to trap him in a capsule, as she tells him to promise her to do something for humanity, as Shadow can only watch in horror as she pushes the button, never getting to witness her death. Back in the present, Shadow interprets this promise as revenge.

Sonic and Shadow meet up after the F-6t Big Foot's defeat. Sonic notices Shadow standing above the wreckage of the robot whilst holding the green Chaos Emerald. Sonic points this out, as he figures out that's the reasoning for G.U.N chasing after him instead of Shadow, calling him a "phony pest." Shadow uses Chaos Control, only for Sonic to be shocked that Shadow can move that fast, only for him to correct himself and realize that would be impossible, theorizing that Shadow is using the Chaos Emerald in his possession to warp. Shadow makes a comment before departing about how he has no time to be caught up in this ordeal, using the Chaos Emerald to Chaos Control to Dr. Eggman's pyramid base. The police show up, and Sonic is promptly arrested once again.

Sonic Battle[]

Centralcity

A full overworld map of Central City, from Sonic Battle.

Central City makes its second full appearance as an overworld in Sonic Battle. In it, there's an apartment where Amy Rose and Cream the Rabbit live, a skyscraper (called Central Lab) with a library and a famous database, and a highway called Battle Highway. Tails goes here to find out more about Emerl. Another part of Central City named Night Babylon also appears as a casino district where Rouge owns her own club and Dr. Eggman has one of his numerous bases.

Shadow the Hedgehog[]

Central City also makes an appearance in Shadow the Hedgehog. The first city appearing in the game is named Westopolis, but if Shadow helps Eggman light five lanterns in his Cryptic Castle base, Shadow goes to the Central City stage. In it, GUN tries to fight off the invading Black Arms aliens that are trying to destroy the city. The Hero Mission is to help Knuckles the Echidna capture twenty bombs, and the Dark Mission is to help Black Doom detonate five giant bombs. Shadow the Hedgehog reveals that the President of the "United Federation" nation lives in Central City in a variant of the White House. It is destroyed by the Eclipse Cannon after clearing any mission of The ARK. Whether Central City is destroyed or not is up to the player. Central City also appears in Expert Mode, where Espio the Chameleon challenges Shadow.

Central City is one of the areas in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. Tails' Lab and G.U.N Headquarters can be found there, as well as numerous shops. Roads lead both to the Green Hill Zone and to Mystic Ruins, although the latter is blocked by G.U.N. troops during chapters 1 and 2.

The enemies in Central City include Wasp Swarms and Eggman's robots, though they are secretly under the Nocturnus Clan's control.

It is in Central City that both Tails and Rouge are recruited into Sonic's party.

Dr. Eggman arrived in Central City in his Faceship and distributed a large batch of the virus there. While Tails went to work on finding a cure for the virus, Tangle and Whisper took it upon themselves to help begin evacuation of the city. For over an hour, many citizens had become Zombots while others were guided by Tangle and Whisper down to a dock. Tails had nearly completed the cure for the virus but was interrupted by Zombots, two of which were Cheese and Chocola. Tails was forced to use his Cyclone to escape his lab and drove off to aid Tangle and Whisper with evacuation. Soon enough, a Restoration Rescue Shuttle came down to the docks and allowed all of the uninfected citizens to board the ship. Tails shortly joined them after the Cyclone was destroyed by the Zombots.[4]

Imposter Syndrome[]

Surge and Kit later came to Central City for a test to assess their fitness by causing chaos without being detected. While Kit had a more elaborate plan in mind, Surge went ahead and wreaked havoc in the city with her electrical powers at super speed, resulting in car crashes, popped street lights, assaults on unaware citizens, and general destruction.[5]

After receiving info from Nite about the recent chaos in Central City, Team Chaotix decided to investigate this matter. After managing to avoid the traffic jam on the way into the city, the Chaotix reached the heart of the city, which was in complete chaos, with various citizens arguing with each other about who caused said chaos. Eventually, the Chaotix received advice from a citizen to check out the sewers, which they did. Down there, they spotted a mysterious figure carrying a crate full of Badnik parts. Although the failed to capture the figure, the crate he left behind held a clue that led them to Central City's docks. There, the Chaotix found an abandoned warehouse, where Clutch the Opossum had amassed the remnants of his wealth, which Rough and Tumble had brought there through the sewers, so he could sell them and restart his criminal empire. While the Chaotix managed to temporarily capture Clutch and dispose of his collection, Clutch and his associates managed to escape using smoke bombs from Espio that Clutch snagged.[6]

The city block they were fighting was taking a lot of damage and word soon got to the Restoration about the fight. Sonic and Tails soon arrived on the scene to end Surge's rampage,[7] however, they were not effective early on due to Sonic's injury from his escape from Eggperial City. Whisper lent her Cyan Wisp to Sonic, allowing him to fight Surge with Cyan Laser. Surge was able to absorb the Cyan Wisp as well, however, causing Tails to use some trickery to stop Surge. Sonic lured her into a hardware store where Tails hot-wired all the appliances in the store to the Dynamo Cage. Before she could be drained of her energy, Surge let out one last blast, destroying the store but leaving Sonic and Tails relatively unharmed. They went to take off the Dynamo Cage, but Kitsunami arrived on the scene and took Surge back to Starline Base Sigma.[8]

Trivia[]

  • In the Japanese version of Shadow the Hedgehog, Black Doom deliberately fired the Eclipse Cannon at Central City because he wanted to kill the President, whom he called the "planet's leader". However, in the English version, he merely stated that he would eradicate all the planet's leaders who would defy him.
  • Central City is also the name of the city that is the home of the Flash, a similar speedster from the DC Comics.
