The University Library exists to support the University’s mission to create and apply knowledge for the benefit of individuals, communities and the economy, and achieves this by developing and delivering a comprehensive range of academic library services to support learning and research across Northumbria as part of the University’s Corporate Strategy and Vision 2025.

Northumbria University Library is one of the best University Libraries in the UK, achieving some of the highest levels of satisfaction and has held the Government Customer Service Excellence (CSE) standard since 2010.

Visitor access
Visitors are welcome at City Campus and Coach Lane Libraries to use the University Library for reference only access to these collections. Colleagues in Ask4Help can provide you with a temporary visitor pass valid for up to one week and you will need to show this card and sign in at the Ask4Help desk on each visit.  You will need to show two forms of official ID, one with your current address and one form of photographic ID; acceptable forms of original photographic ID include:

  • Current passport
  • Current photocard driving licence
  • Citizen card UK

Visitors can access City Campus and Coach Lane Libraries during our core hours, which are usually 9am - 8pm, Monday - Friday and 9am - 5pm at weekends.  Access may be restricted during exam periods and during University vacation periods - please check our opening times before making your visit.

Students and staff from Newcastle University and Sunderland University can visit the library during core hours, on production of your home institution ID (non-digital format). You will need to sign in at the Ask4Help desk.

If you are likely to be a regular visitor to our libraries on a reference-only basis, you can apply for a reference-only Smartcard. Alternatively, if you may prefer to apply to join the library; where you can also apply for borrowing rights (which may be subject to a charge).

Please note: If using a SatNav, the postcode for Coach Lane Campus Library takes you into the housing estate opposite. You will need to look out for the Northumbria University signs.

If you need help finding your way around campus, there are maps are available of City Campus and Coach Lane Campus.

The nearest metro stations are Haymarket (City Campus West), Manors (City Campus East) and Four Lane Ends (10 minutes’ walk from Coach Lane Campus). More information is available at Nexus Metro.

Car parking on campus is for permit holders only, however there are a number of nearby public car parks available, including College Street Car Park and St. Georges Car Park near City Campus Library.

Exploring the University Library Collection
  • Library Search is a powerful research tool that will help you discover our collection and find the information you are looking for. Library Search touchscreens are also available to use on the Library floors.
  • At City Campus Library, current Art and Design magazines and journals are at the back of floor 5. Previous editions of magazines are stored in the sub-basement where print journals can also be located.
  • At Coach Lane Library, print journals can be found on Floor 2.
  • Due to licencing restrictions, many databases and ejournals are reserved for use by Northumbria students and staff.
  • As a visitor, you can request access to the University Library Special Collections. Please see the Special Collections pages for more details.

The Library offers a range of different study environments that visitors are welcome to use. There are silent, quiet, collaborative and social spaces. If you have a laptop, you can take advantage of our extensive provision of plug points. Consider the needs of other Library users, if you are using a laptop, please do not sit in front of a PC.

Technology for visitors
WiFi Access

Visitors are welcome to sign in to our free cloud WiFi. This will appear on your device as WiFi Guest. Follow the below steps to setup the WiFi connection:

  • From the device connect to the network ‘WiFi Guest’
  • On The Cloud landing page locate the box ‘Get online at Northumbria University’ and click ‘Go’
  • Scroll down to select ‘Create Account’
  • Enter the required details and the account will be created.
  • The device will then be connected to WiFi Guest

If you would like to setup the WiFi connection before your visit, you can register for an account beforehand by visiting the registration page. You will then be automatically connected when you visit the University Library.

 

Ask4Help provides a central point of contact for help and support to access a range of University services including accommodation, careers support, University Library, disability and welfare support.
