Dev Interviews seem to go one or two ways from the perspective of the interviewee. 1. Fluid, simple, and straight to the point. Every question answered to the best of your knowledge. With luck, an industry related joke or two at the end. Or 2. Like a car crash with a log truck and 20 vehicles. Hard to look away and stop on your own. Knowing why is easy. One has a section coding in front of others, the other does not. It matters not what your experience is or how well you perform. Sometimes coding sections when being watched can provide a level of distraction and discomfort unlike any other. I can say with experience, no matter what. Trust in your knowledge, your experience, and your value. This section is not a complete reflection of you or your skills. Thanks for listening. I’ll go practice my syntax now.

I stumbled upon this post and one thing really resonated with me: "software engineering isn't about knowing everything it's about knowing how to figure things out." With the amount of items we must know when we apply for jobs nowadays (specially Front End Developers, as of late), I've noticed a trend through the interviews I've gone through: this skill is being overlooked! Yes, there are many ways for us to get the syntax for a solution (Stack overflow, or even AI..), however, knowing how to figure things out, goes one step further and, in many ways, shows experience, knowledge and shows the ability to look into what's coming, what the new trends are, the new technologies etc. Some places are showing an expectation that we must know everything and have extended experience in everything! I still ask myself - how?! 🙆🏾‍♂️ Yup, I'm still looking for a job and no, I don't know every single thing every single job is asking for but I'm always learning, improving and adapting. That is a skill I will always show and hope it gets recognised. thank you for.your post Vidar Hokstad 👏🏾

TypeScript helps with type safety but it fails in doing so at runtime for things like fetch calls. This is where a validator is needed to validate the format of the incoming data. My favorite is ZOD, and below is a simple example of it.

I put on my interviewer's hat 🧢 today to join Brian Norton on a technical interview at Chameleon. It wasn't my first time interviewing - I had quite a few experiences before, the first time ~8 years ago when I was just a jr. 🐣 developer; although every interview is a new experience. My knowledge as an interviewer is primarily empirical (both as an interviewer but also being on the other side way more times), but one thing I learned in a DEVNAESTRADA podcast episode a few years back stuck with me to this day: "As an interviewer, I want to make the person I'm talking to as comfortable as possible to show their strengths. After all, we have the same shared goal (of this being a successful hire): hopefully, that will be the candidate to make it". -- I quote Antonio Marin Neto 👾 (loosely, as far as my memory is capable of 🙈, but you get the idea). 💡 This was an enormously useful insight I have tried to exercise since then when interviewing. (thanks, Neto + Eduardo Matos!) Way easier said than done, I recognize. Hopefully, I was able to get it done today though! 🐥

🚀 Had a senior iOS position interview yesterday where I was tasked with: 1. Creating a label to display a value 2. Implementing two buttons to increment and decrement the value by 1 3. Dynamically changing the label's color to blue if the value is a multiple of 3; otherwise, it remains black 4. Ensuring the decrease button is disabled when the value reaches zero My approach? Using an actor for thread safety and a viewModel marked as MainActor to ensure all tasks execute on the main thread. The actor handles the core operations of incrementing and decrementing, while the viewModel manages business logic and maintains a reference to the actor object. #iOSInterview #SwiftUI #Concurrency #ThreadSafety

I stopped using Lodash because I only needed a few methods from it. It’s easier for me to create a small utils folder in my project with the functions I need instead of installing the entire Lodash library. Lodash also includes many outdated functions that are already part of JavaScript, and you still have to install @types/lodash since it doesn’t have built-in types. But recently, I found the es-toolkit library, and it’s amazing! It’s similar to Lodash and has many useful tools, but has built-in TypeScript support and works with tree shaking out of the box. It's constantly maintained, and there’s no legacy code that should have been removed a long time ago. Hot take : there’s no such thing as a 10x dev or engineer.  There are juniors and seniors. There are people who work faster or slower. If someone on your team is producing 10x what someone else is producing, it’s either poor quality or you have someone massively underproducing.

Here is a little weekend project. A single file shader runner with hot reloading on shader file modification. Something like a locally run shadertoy.

Dear Developers, Focus on the problem, not the tech stack. When I was about 20, I worked for an insurance company as a claims handler. Each day, we would take calls and log our times in excel spreadsheets that everyone could access. They were what drove bonuses and promotions, but were invariably wrong, sometimes even maliciously edited. So in-between calls, I started building a solution. Unfortunately, because I was just a lowly claims handler, I wasn't allowed access to fancy programming languages, databases or IDE's. So armed only with Excel, VBA, MS Access and a shared drive I built a solution that - Supported about 200 user's, with permissions and groups - Integrated with our central call system - Integrated with our claims management system - Was secure (both code and access db were protected) - Provided cross functional reporting for team leads and individuals It was a robust and complex system, written in an awful tech stack - but it solved the problem. Our job is to solve problems. You'll never solve anything if you waste all your time trying to decide the tech you want to use. So start building. Solve problems as they come up. You either die a hero or you live long enough to write #Javascript. I started off the year with a very vague plan for my career, all I knew is that I needed a challenge and surely one came along. Anyone that's worked with me technically can confirm that Im a big advocate for #flutter/ #dart when building cross-platform apps but in the final week of January I was tasked with building an app using #reactnative …in just 4 weeks. For someone that hadn’t seriously worked with Javascript for atleast 4 years prior to that, it was a daunting ask but I like a challenge so I took it up. 5 core features with a new tech stack whose community can never agree on one thing(more on that another day.), it was tutorials on top of tutorials, combing through open source projects on #Github, reading the React docs back to back to back all while trying to make sense of what the hell #Expo is and why its so important in #reactnative. 5 weeks plus some release processes later, the app was rolled out. With over 1,500+ users thus far and some impeccable performance metrics, its safe to say I built something pretty solid. As always there are definitely parts I could have done better and some that will need revisiting especially that it was my first run with the stack but taking the win nonetheless. I'll be doubling down on #reactnative and #typescript for the rest of the year on a couple of side projects and OSS tooling.
