The nature of your job changes dramatically and it's important to figure out the most effective ways to help your team and the company. As noted in the article, it's very easy to have your time consumed by managerial tasks (operational work). I'm hearing a lot of pain and confusion from a lot of designers and technologists and other folks trying to navigate jobs in these times. You as an individual worker (or as a customer or user of the products of design and technology) will never be valued for your own sake by an organization striving to maximize shareholder value. Collective action is the only way to counter this mandate and increase the cost of unethical, inhumane, or otherwise unreasonable practices. Sometimes this means working together more or less formally to influence policy and regulation, sometimes this means unionization. Asking nicely isn't going to do it. Some of the most effective design leaders don’t need to speak the loudest. Here’s what we've seen: ↳ Junior designers look to you to simplify complex problems. ↳ Product teams rely on you to connect business goals with user needs. ↳ Executives trust you to turn insights into clear, actionable plans. But, at times, others will question your decisions, even if they don’t fully understand the context. However ↓ The best leaders don’t have to make noise to prove their point. Your quiet influence comes from years of experience and knowing when to guide the conversation. Being a design leader means: → Mentoring others without seeking recognition. → Taking thoughtful, small steps that shape long-term strategy. → Helping people grasp the impact of design, even when it isn’t immediately clear. If you ever feel unnoticed, remember that the value you bring is often realised over time—not in a single meeting or presentation. Keep at it. Doing good research is a monumental task. And yet so many researchers out there just plug away at it every day, with so much of their effort unseen. I love that this task list includes the tough mental work of ensuring a productive experience for everyone. A small personal example: We were looking into potential trust issues with a new AI-powered feature. My interview script included the standard 5 minutes for obtaining informed consent and having a warm up conversation. Then we dived into simulating an encounter with the product. But 10 minutes in I noticed my participant was bouncing their knee up and down and had crossed their arms. Something was wrong. I thought back to the weird, long, stark white hallway we had to walk through to get to the testing room. The basically empty campus they'd arrived and checked in at. They were uncomfortable. And I was supposed to be assessing their level of trust! I changed my own posture to one that was less focused on them - usually I lean slightly in to express interest, but this individual was possibly feeling too much of that engagement for their comfort. I sat back more casually in my chair and turned my shoulders slightly away. And I went back to a topic from the warm up. Something that they had said earlier that had made them smile. This meant cutting out a small portion of the tasks I'd intended to go through. But the entire session would have been in question if I hadn't taken the time to ensure they were comfortable enough to be open with me. Researchers do things like this all the time.

The ONE biggest challenge stopping design teams from the wider adoption of design systems UIUX design teams across companies and agencies have challenges of different sorts. Not all of them have realized the problems in their everyday design work. Not all of them know there could be a solution to their everyday design problems. Not all of them have found their way to using design systems. OR There's something stopping them from building their design projects on a design system. They can create instant clarity when product decisions feel murky. UX/DR should be a job title. I spent a few days last week with dscout and loved the discussions around UX Design and UX Research and their roles. In the current job market, we have seen many talented UX/Researchers laid off or devalued. While they delivered valuable insights, in many cases, they were not actionable or did not structure a team around them to be actionable. This is where we continue to blur the lines on Research and Design and deliver for our customers.    A UX designer is inherently a UX researcher, as effective design hinges on a deep understanding of user needs and behaviors. In this role, the UX designer immerses themselves in research processes, gathering insights through user interviews, usability testing, and data analysis. This research informs design choices, allowing designers to validate ideas and iterate based on real user feedback. A UX researcher can go further as well to inform design, stretch to do some wireframing or other artifacts to support the work - delivering insights is not the end state. #ux #userexperience #userresearch #uxresearch #uxr #colab #amazondesign #designleadership

40 amazing *legitimately available as of today* Senior UX Research positions are open and on The List, including 3 open roles from Microsoft, 2 at ServiceNow, and many more from Reddit, Inc., Meta, Google and GitHub. Almost all of them are #remote and #senior positions, and either #UXResearch or #SeniorProductLeadership jobs (which tend to be a natural progression for some very senior UXRs.) And although it's research-adjacent and somewhat junior, there's a Full Time role as a User Research Operations Specialist at DonorsChoose that sounds amazing. For those of you who, inexplicably, are not on the monthly mailing list, a few stats of interest: 🚀 Of the 40 jobs listed, 33 are newly-added just since June 16th. 🚀 19 have been removed from employers' websites or job boards in the last 30 days 🚀 On average, listings come and go in *26 days*. These jobs are highly-sought, and although I think I'm doing a better job of spotting them and getting them posted more quickly, my rough guess is that most positions are open to applications for less than 30 days.
