This one word in your contracts could cost you. Here’s something I see all the time… Web designers and developers and document designers promising accessibility “compliance.” They use the terms “compliance” and “conformance” interchangeably. But they aren’t the same, and the difference could put you in hot water. I talked about the key difference and what to say and do, so you can CYA, in the latest episode of Design Domination. Figma’s ConFig ’24 released several new features that caused many to continue to sing their praises. However, there is a trend their business model that is problematic. New features are initially available to all in beta. Once the feature goes into production, there will be a charge to use the new feature. Figma seems to be building an a la cart feature menu creating a nickel and dime growth strategy. The problem is that Figma has already surpassed the exorbitant pricing of Adobe products. Has Figma considered the full spectrum of their user base? While some enterprises may be able to float that price tag (For managers, it still can be a hard sell for budget approval), small businesses and independent designers will find the cost to be challenging or prohibitive. While Figma may generate some initial profit, it may not work in the long-term once the romance is gone.

Let's talk paywall design. Beautiful or not… I challenge you to test an ✨ugly paywall✨ I know the name doesn't sound appealing, but I encourage you to try what you may define as an ✨ugly paywall✨. I’ve seen this work before, and I have some theories why this is: Simplicity 🙏🏼 When I say ‘go ugly,’ that will usually result in ‘going simple.’ Maybe you remove the beautiful photo or the flashy design, leaving a clean, focused message… Clear value prop 🧠 Less clutter means a clearer value proposition. Users focus on the offer, not the aesthetics, which could lead to better conversions. That’s why you may see apps that opt for a trial-info paywall without even listing the features. Surprise Factor 💡 If the rest of your app is beautifully designed and full of animations, a bold, simple paywall can stand out. The contrast grabs attention and makes users focus on the offer itself. After reading Kara Swisher's "Burn Book," (which I HIGHLY recommend for anyone working in tech), I started thinking more about how digital designers can actualize responsible design techniques in their day-to-day practice. John Payne's lecture, "How to Work Responsibly with Emerging Technologies" (on EPIC People's website) is really an outstanding and inspiring resource. He reminds us of the unintended consequences of launching MVPs at scale, and how we might shift our thinking and practices to mitigate unintended effects. One method, creating a Narrative Map, was an especially fun exercise that John shared. My team and I thought about that in relation to transportation -- the Jetsons and Mad Max as examples of fictional utopian and dystopian vehicles. Both the vehicles and their environments tell very different stories about humanity. Designers -- how are you thinking differently about your practice than you did 5 years ago? What methods and tools are you using to practice responsible design?

A lot of what we do as designers is clean up. Sure, we talk about story arcs and designing the experience, but the average presentation may not have the time or resources to think bigger than getting it done, even when it’s an essential pitch by the C-suite for a new initiative. That's where following the template, using it wisely to maximize variation, and keeping it simple comes into play. Much of what you need to say should be in the talk track rather than in the slide, and if you need to go into detail, use an appendix, preread existing material, or a download to let people dive deep. Designing for a screen comes with practice, like riding a bike. In my experience helping thousands of presenters, the less design YOU have to do, the better it is for you and the AUDIENCE. Focus on *design that matters.* Be *intentional with design.* #presentationdesign

Pro tip → Sometimes plain and boring works! We're trained to obsess over aesthetics. Pixel-perfect gradients, breathtaking hero images...the whole shebang. But here's an idea out of left field: what if sometimes, boring is what we actually need? Think about it. Remember that time you spent weeks agonizing over designing that perfect button for a CTA, only to discover a simple red "Buy Now" converted like crazy? Less is sometimes actually more! Clutter and unnecessary elements can distract users from completing your desired action. Sometimes, a clean, clear interface with minimal fuss converts better. Think Google search results page 👉 it's effective. Simple intuitive design is powerful. // Remember// We don't design these screens for ourselves or our designer friends. Test and analyze. Don't be afraid to embrace the "boring" if the data shows it works. Minimalism and boring work but remember to: - Inject some personality. - Don't be afraid to experiment. - Prioritize function over sterile aesthetics. After all, users might remember your app if it doesn't look like every other app out there. So, the real design question becomes: is it minimalism, or masterful simplification?
