It’s packed full of information but it’s never boring. I chose it because I’ve always wondered about Antarctica.
I’m afraid I forgotten my history lessons from long ago and I remember very little. I picked up so much new knowledge in here.
For example, there are no trees in Antarctica. None.
But there are churches! Including at least one made from ice. I can’t remember if both churches were made from ice or just that one. The fact that there are any churches there to begin with absolutely shocked me.
You also learn about the Different animals and plant life and Sea life. One of my favorite parts of the book was meeting Pandora. I am a student of Greek Mythology . And I was very much surprised to meet a darling little pet called Pandora. I’m not going to reveal anymore. You’ll just have to read about it for yourself!
There are researchers in Antarctica probably at this very moment. Many people live there temporarily sometimes though for a long time to do research. I didn’t know that either seriously or at least I didn’t know how many people there were there at one time.
It’s a short read, but it’s a lot of fun, and I promise you that the author brings you into the story and you might just feel like you are in Antarctica yourself.
I was really cautious about reading this because some books like this can be really dry in the writing, but not this one at all.
You read it in colors and there’s so much information and so many interesting tidbits of information that I never knew before, that it’s definitely worth an extremely high recommendation....more

Before The revolutions passed, and the stars spun silently underfoot.
Starchild(Star Wanderers)by Joe Vasicek
My Review:
I fell in love with this story.
Before I even get into my review....the cover art, the cover art! As beautiful as a shining star.
This book left me...starry eyed. It is not the type of story I usually read although my tastes seem to be changing once again.
Starchild is special. She is the child of a star wanderer. This book IS Science Fiction/Fantasy. Apparently the author has a whole series about the Star people and I never knew it. Guess who is now going to be reading them?
But back to this story...it's short, it's ethereal, it's other worldy and it's luminous. It's also deeply sad for reasons I cannot get into because of potential spoilers.
This story takes less then a half hour to read and I really think you should. There is such an audience for this story. People who love ethereal (there's that word again!) stories and writing will like this. Also for anyone who has ever fell in love and had it end badly....though I want to stress THIS IS NOT IN THE GENRE OF ROMANCE AT ALL.
But it will stick with you. In an odd way, I was reminded of some of my favorite Historical reads, "I Cleopatra" being one. This is just because of the captivating atmosphere and the fact that the reader feels right there.
I really cannot say more then what I have said. Maybe I can say that Starchild is also about making the wrong choices, something I think we can all relate to. Sometimes one wants something so hard in the moment that one thinks with their head and turns off all rational thought. This is the journey that Starchild goes on and I think many of my GR friends will want to go on that journey with her. Highly recommended....more

My Review:
Wow. Am I actually the FIRST person to review this?? Wow!
And this little story is breathtaking and glistens with beauty....like Diamonds.
So, I found this by accident. I'd had a tough week full of bureaucratic garbage via phone with nameless customer service reps. I wanted a short. I read across genres as most of my friends know.
So, I hit up Amazon and found....this book.
And just wow. (How many times is that now?) This is a poignant and reflective story that takes less then an hour to read but beguiles you with the prose which is luminescent. Look at the quote I used! The whole book's like that.
Now I am going to stop. I cannot go into details. Mine is the only review so far and I do not want to give stuff away.
But the story is for those who love the sun. And the mountains. And the beauty of the universe.
It's for those who love the stars at night, the dusk, the glow of the sun spreading its wings to envelop you as daybreak hits.
It's beautiful. It's futuristic. And...I can't talk about the end darn it!!!
If ever the author sees this...please think about expanding it to a novella. To good to be so short.
I hate commercialization. How these words relate to the plot? You will have to read and find out!...more

My review:
Imagination is a powerful thing.
Are you a dreamer? Do you spend much time in your head? Do you imagine other worlds, have imaginary conversations in your heads with people?
Do you yearn?
If so..this enchanting little book maybe for you.
I do not really want to say to much about the plot. I went in knowing little, which is a good idea.
This book is about what is mentioned above. Imagination. memory . Love, fantasy. magic, other worlds in which exists things nobody except the dreamer would think about.
And it all manifests itself in Max.
Max is a quirky, fun, off beat lawn care specialist. Lawn care...not a job all people would love but Max loves it. With passion.
And he loves his dog Bilky. His wife, Nellie. His kids. His best buddy. Yes..Max is a good man. And Max loves.
But Max is one of those people..you know the type. The ones who are always in their head. The type who see the world and what's in it, just a tad bit differently.
I am one of those people. I bet many of you are. Readers in general tend to have that aspect to them.
Max lives in two realities. The real world and his imaginary one, filled with luminous ponderings, conversations with John F Kennedy and many moments where he spaces out, lost in day dreams.
But what happens when imagination coincides with reality?
Max has never cheated on Nellie. NEVER! They have a great marriage.
Until the beautiful stranger comes along.
She glides out from the Rose Bushes. She billows out from the sea. Who..who..is this exquisite, mysterious and stunning stranger and what does she want with Max?
I am stopping here.
The book is odd..like Max. It is also lovely and ethereal. And there is a Whimsical quality about this book. It is pretty short (although longer than a Novella) but the characters are etched in humility and are so exquisitely drawn. And we love Max. And Bilco. And Nellie. It is amazing how this book has such a timeless feel. It felt like it could have been written last year..or one hundred years ago.
Of coarse there is more going on besides the Beautiful stranger. And trigger warning: Max's wife is a nurse and her days are described so there will be scenes in hospitals with patients who do not survive. I myself skimmed those scenes. They are not for everybody and I am one they were not for. You can still read the book as these scenes do not dominate and can be skimmed over.
Now I must warn of spoilers as I want to discuss the end. Before I do so, let me have the honor of recommending this enthralling little book that is packed full of sparkling words and atmosphere, and filled with love and dreaming and simple beauty. I think many may love this.
END SPOILERS:
The end has been discussed. My opinion is..we are not meant to know. More on that in a minute.
My first thought was that she was Aphrodite. If you are familiar with Mythology, you know Aphrodite, rose from the sea. That scene in MLATBS reminded me of the stories of Aphrodite.
But I am not so sure. I also started shifting my opinion feeling that she was a lovely siren whom Max summoned with his mind.
Or she was simply a product of Max's very active imagination.
Was she real? I believe so. To many people saw her. Unless this was one long dream (and I am not ruling out that possibility) she would have had to exist.
Or maybe not. LOL. There is so much about the world we do not know. I think it comes down to what the doctor told Nellie: there are things and people in other worlds we cannot begin to imagine. But Max can.
Maybe we are not meant to know what happened. Because there is so much about the Universe we cannot and do not understand.
So, to sum up..a strangely beautiful and beguiling book that is most definitely different. I will not forget Max, Nellie and Bilco anytime soon....more

It was good. It was good indeed. But way to short. I mean..I adore short stories but this NEEDED to be longer.
The plot concerns a diver who is relating a story of how he almost died while diving. He is describing what he saw beneath the waves..at the bottom of the ocean and it it changed him as a human being.
I loved the plot. I loved the beautiful and vivid writing. Just please make it longer! I had barely started when it was finished. I still hope the writer lengthens it.
When I was a kid, I'd dream of the sea and I also would dream of whole villages and people who dwealt beneath the tides. I grew up obsessed with the ocean. This book fit me perfectly but I am just baffled why the writer stopped at a few pages in. It feels to unfinished.
By the way..look at that cover art! How could any sea person not adore THAT? I wonder who took the picture. It is a beguiling cover and it made me want to read the book. Loved the premise..would have liked a longer story.

The Tiger Queens, Stephanie Marie Thornton
Five stars. Maybe the best of the year so far.
I am having such a year with books in 2020. I have had the pleasure to read lots of 4 and 5 star books, particularly in the last month or so. This maybe the best of the year so far.
For a book about Genghis Khan, I did not think this book would be so....soulful. But it is. The story is told by the women he loved and who loved him.
And I went into it, thinking I'd not like it or maybe even DNF. I took a chance. The last book I attempted to read, told about a famous warrior from the viewpoint of the women who loved him, was "The conqueror's wife" about the women who loved Alexander the Great and I never finished it.
But how wrong was I! This book is amazing. It is narrated by four different women, all of whom were intricate parts of Genghis Khan's life.
The first part of the book..and the longest story..is told by his first wife, Borte Ujin. What a woman she was! I love reading about strong women and Borte Ujin falls into that category. She had more strength in one finger than many have in a lifetime. Reading about her was a wonderful experience.
As I said, her story is first and the longest. It starts shortly before she meets Genghis for the first time, when she is just a young girl. But it continues through many many days and years of both deep darkness and tragedy as well as searing and intense beauty.
Then there are three other point of views, including Alaqui, the first daughter of Khan, Fatima, (The Rose), a captured slave and Sorkhokhtan, his daughter in law.
All four women's stories are fascinating in their own right. And all four women live through so much tragedy.
Tiger Queens spans years. It is a long book filled with love, loss and mesmerizing stories and events. It is also not for the faint of heart. There is blood and gore and rape and death..just know that before you go into it. And there is also extreme violence, torture and rape. So TRIGGER ALERT! Also, I am the first to turn away from stories involving animal cruelty but this story is about a culture that did indeed do things like eat horse meat on a regular basis. I was OK during these scenes but do feel compelled to let the reader know.
But that is a small part of the book. Tiger Queens is at once a cultural read as well as a story about families and love, friendships and loyalty. The story that emerges is hauntingly lovely and captivating. I was..and am..enthralled.
Atmosphere plays a big role and the villages and customs of the Mongol empire are described in detailed and starkly gorgeous prose that is all consuming and drops you right into the book itself. Time will slip away from you are you read this.
I think you will know, almost from the start if this is a book for you or not. I love the sensitivity in Khan that the reader is made deeply aware of. He loved and he loved hard. He loved his wife, his children and his whole family as they did him. I was struck by the loyalty and devotion depicted here.
It is impossible..or at least it was for me..not to feel as though I am walking in the villages with these people. You will feel everything from the winds blowing across the villages to the glimmering snowmelt to the lush fields and lakes and streams. I do not see how once read, anyone will be able to ever forget this book....more

The Old Cape House by BarbaWe stepped back to admire our work and then closed the sliding barn door to the old carriage house, now a country gallery.
The Old Cape House by Barbara Eppich Struna
The Old Cape House is a work of Historical Fiction, taking place in Cape Cod. The book has two stories in one. In current times, Nancy and her family have just relocated to Cape Cod and purchased a beautiful old house that they are also planning to convert into a gallery. Not long after moving in, they stumble upon some items that appear to be quite old, maybe hundreds of years old. The family are slowly pulled into the mystery of the C ape Cod House and events that happened in the Seventeen Hundreds.
The second story is the mystery of the people or person who dwelled in the house before..all those years ago.
Way back, Maria Halleck, just a young girl, falls in love with Sam. There is a significant age difference between them and Maria's father orders Sam to stay away from her. They fall in love anyway and Sam leaves to plunder for Gold in the High Seas, promising to come back for his love. Only he doesn't..
Alone and seemingly abandoned, Maria finds she is pregnant. The townspeople are not happy about this and brand Maria as evil. There is a trial held.
I will not say anymore. I thought this book was utterly charming, with breathtaking descriptions of The Cape. If you are reading this and have never been to The Cape, you may not appreciate it to the extent that Fans of Cape Cod do.
I used to vacation in The C ape. I knew the sights and smells since almost before I could walk. As a proud New Englander, I know how unique and special The Cape is and it was delightful to read a work of historical fiction that takes place there.
I was surprised to see many low ratings. I agree the writing was , at times, rather stilted in the conversations. I did not care about that. I could easily imagine this happening and my personal only complaint is that I was so caught up in the Historical story, I really did not care about present time and skimmed much of t hat part. I find this happens in many Historical works that switch back and forth from present to the past.
For me, Maria was such a compelling character, that I rushed through the present, skipping pages, impatiently thumbing through, to get to the past again.
I would recommend The old C ape House to fans of Historical Fiction. It's a beautiful book and makes me want to buy a cottage in Cape Cod....more

It is not haunted by your more traditional ghosts but by a beautiful woman..a forest siren whose voice often calls out to the towns people at night. There have been reports, through the years of missing men. Nobody goes into Songwind Wood.
Many are skeptical of the tale, including the three above mentioned but when their enemy alludes them and flees into Songwind Wood, they have a choice to make. Will they cower in fear or follow him in?
They make the decision to follow. And as to what happens? Well..one of the travelers narrates as he spins the tale to his captive audience in the local tavern.
This story was fun and different and just a bit eerie..OK..Alot eerie! I just wish it had been a bit longer but I did very much enjoy it. Highly recommend it to fans of the Fantasy genre....more

Do you like to be scared? Do you love Stephen King?
Ever binged on all night twilight zone episodes?
Do you like eerie little stories where you are afraid to turn the lights off at night?
If so, this is the book for you.
Actually, with this book will actually be reading ten stories in one because it’s an anthology. It’s an anthology of old school horror and man oh man do the stories pack a punch.
So as I said there are ten of them but the one thing they all have in common is they will creep the living heck out of you. From tormented Ex prisoners, to bullied school children to selling your soul for fame and glory, to the perfect dream vacation, (NOT!), each story has its own unique and individual twist on the genre. They were a pleasure to read.
Of the ten stories I certainly had my favorites but I liked all of them. I don’t want to get into the specifics of what each story is about because I think it’s best to head into it not knowing much. I definitely saw shades of Stephen King in many of the stories stores as well as John Saul who was one of my favorite authors growing up.
Horror, for me,should have that slow moving creepy quality, the slow realization that all is not OK. I am a child of old school horror. I count a very old film, by the very creepy name of "Let's scare Jessica to death" as one of my all time favorite films. And my favorite all time horror novel is “The other” which I think is one of the scariest books (and movies) ever made.
I really enjoyed this anthology as it took me back to the days when I read this genre on a regular basis.
Now I am not going to say that there was no gore at all in any of the stories because there certainly is. There are a couple of them that leaned just a little too science-fiction for me but by and large I loved all the stories.
I would encourage anyone who likes short stories and anthologies and old-school Horror done right.. to read this Anthology. You will devour this series of stories They really made for entertaining and fun reading. Now how on earth am I going to turn the lights out and go to sleep?...more

So lovely to read about this lovely little town and the world building was great. I read this awhile back and just forgot to review.
I was looking for something a bit darker. What can I say? I have developed a fascination with Sirens and picked this book not knowing how utterly charming it would be. While it was not along the lines of"the Wicked Deep", which was what I was looking for, the charm and beauty of the book and it's characters was vivid and lovely to read about and I am so very glad I gave this gem of a book a chance.

Swan Lake (Timeless Fairy Tales, #7) by K.M. Shea
So it is YA week on GR and I have posted a few comments proudly proclaiming my love of YA among other genres. I pity adults who think they are to old to read YA. What books they are missing out on!
So while I like YA, I do not often read Fairy Tales, although that seems to be changing. This is a short read about Odette cursed by a sorcerer to become a swan. There are others like her. And she is only a swan for part of the day. The other part, she can take human form.
Naturally, there is a prince and magic involved. It is almost the exact opposite of another YA I read about a month ago, called "The Wicked deep" (which landed on my favorites list). That book was dark, brooding, eerie and haunting.
While this did not land on my faves of all time, it is a short, sweet and fun read that I would recommend to anyone who wants a book to feel uplifted by. The story is sweet as sugar, the cover art is exquisite (as many others have mentioned) and I enjoyed the book very much. Four stars from this proud YA reader!...more

Jean Steinfeld- Friday I went to therapy, Saturday I went crazy: Travels through health, to insanity and back home.
So. Full disclosure. The lovely lady who wrote this book is a family member. She is my mother who sadly passed away two years ago. Many years before, she had written this and Our family, but in particular my dad, was able to get it published.
And I am overjoyed to see this book in print. This is a must read for anyone who:
Enjoys Non Fiction.
Enjoys books about Psychology.
Has ever felt uncertain or fearful or on the brink of emotional collapse....and wants to read about someone else who has been there on the brink..and come back.
Has ever been in therapy and had doubts..about their therapist and/or themselves.
Who enjoys reading about Psychology, marriage and family, or any of the above mentioned topics from a female point of view.
Who just wants an intriguing and unique read.
You will find that here. Jean writes about her experiences in such a deeply personal way that you will feel as though you know her.
Jean herself was a Social Worker for many many years. Her experience entering therapy and the subsequent events that followed are both true and instantly relateable. The story is an emotional and penetrating look at the dangers of therapy as well as what can happen when the therapist themselves has unresolved issues.
Jean's experience almost broke her but it did not. She was able to come back with strength and determination. Her story is inspirational and I truly hope that you read this book and get as much out of it as I did....more

Luscious is the word that comes to mind.
I read this because I found it on Goodreads. So glad I joined this site.
So I have read several of Abbott's books with "Dare Me" being my favorite, so far at least.
I happen to like my books dark. And I love Noir. I also love Noir movies. And then there is this: the cover.
The COVER ART on this..I did not wan t to even read one page at first..just stare at this exquisitec cover. Covers matter..ALOT!
But in terms of the book..maybe I have just read to much domestic Noir and seen to many Noir films. I mean..honestly..I did not love it. The first part of it was really draggy and yes I did skim. Alot.
But it picks up. I LOVE the gritty nature of Die a Little. The imagery the book creates is captivating.
But the story really isn't. I guess I expected something a bit more unpredictable and in places, honestly yes, I skipped over or skimmed because some parts were dull.
But here is something else: this book..it is a movie waiting to happen. Assuming it has not happened already.
You see the book ..the images..before you while reading it. It's all there..and I have a feeling I would LOVE the film version of this. Very much. Has it been made into a film yet? Because it would be a damn great one.
I do not say that to often but Abbott is a very visual writer. And this book strongly reminded me of a film called "House of Games", the ultimate Noir film. If you have not heard of it, watch it or read Roger Ebert's review of it. He captures it perfectly.
So that is what I imagine this material could look like on screen. It is viv id and as dark as an alley way at midnight. It just took an awful long time to get going.
I would give it 3.5 stars. I think this might be a book I need to read again. If you like Noir yes read it. This is one that is best read at night, with a glass of wine, listening to the night sounds outside your house or apartment or wherever you live.
And someone needs to turn this into a film....more

SI love Steve Kornacki. There is nothing better than sitting back and watching him at the board on MSNBC. He is so smart! And his analysis is amazing.
So this book was written by Kornacki and I do agree with most of it. He traces the roots of Political Bias, Tribalism and he does a really good job of taking the read backwards in time, through the Nineties.
I will admit..I did not become really interested and fanatical about Politics until the late Nineties. But it was 2000-2001 that really got me started. Bush/Gore a little while later, really did it for me but by that time we were out of the Nineties.
I do remember sneaking online at work and seeing fighting on message boards between the red people and the blue people with the occasional purple person joining in. ( not very many). We really had reached the point of no return by then and though I thought it was toxic at the time, it was NOTHING like today.
I saw a review or two that say it goes back even further to Nixon. Since I was a mere slip of a girl back then, I do not feel qualified to say. The republicans, during Watergate, were not nearly as bad as today though and I know this because I studied Watergate and I remember watching Nixon's "I am not a crook" speech. So even when I was like, 5 or 6, I still had an interest.
Kornacki has always had a fascination with this topic. You can even see it on Television, in the way he speaks and relates. When I first started following politics seriously, I did not even know what red and blue stood for!
It is really hard though to compare the Nineties in a way to today mainly because we did not have the internet and there were not constant news cycles, altered on line vidoes, Russian Propaganda and all else that comes with the internet . I think social media was really the start of it but it was heading in that general direction anyway.
Kornacki gives us a bit of a history lesson or maybe a better term would be that he reminds us of some things. I had forgot some really dirty tricks like what Bush did to McCain in South Carolina with the Push Polls and Robo calls and then with Gingrich and Rove who are still around today and as nasty as ever. I think that this book is a great read, especially for anyone who is a Kornacki Fan..like me! ...more

What an enchanting little book!
I filed this under children's books but honestly? Anyone of any age can read and enjoy. I would have LOVED this even more if I'd read it as a child I think.
I am to tired to do a plot review but it is indeed about a group of mystic princesses, all children of Gods and Kings. They are sent to be protectors to Harmony who is in hiding from some people. They want to kidnap her because she brings joy to people and they want to start wars.
In this book, you will swim with dolphins, visit under water castles, get turned into a rose, breath underwater, frolic with Lady bugs and see stunning Corral in bright magnificent colors. I adored every moment of it.
It was so sweet to read a children's book for a change! It brought me back to why I fell in love with reading. It also made the magic of childhood come alive again for a short time. Highly recommended. I found this enchanting and am pleased to see it is a series. I look forward to reading the next one....more

Romantic suspense is a category I maybe reading more of as, in the last few years, I have really read several very good books in this genre.
This is one of them. The location of this novel is the mountains of Alaska. That is a great selling point right there!
It is a fun read with an unforgettable leading lady, named Summer. Summer has become the target of a serial killer. She is at once likable and sassy as she runs for her life!
While on the run, in the vast mountains, she is helped by Clay, a good friend of her brother and a police officer. Together they match wits against the clever and deadly killer.
Mountain Refuge is a heck of alot of fun.It has romance. It is packed with action but somehow never becomes dull. And you get mystery, mixed with romance ,mixed with a fabulous mountain setting capped off with excellent story telling. And that makes for a pretty overall cool read!
The great thing about Mountain refuge is it really can appeal to almost anyone. I really enjoyed this much more then expected.
Highly recommended for fans of romantic suspense....more

Enthralling. What a fun whimsical read. I enjoyed this book so much. It was such a relief to get engrossed in something that is both light but utterly wonderful too.
Many times I have issues with books that are light or to whimsical or chick lit because they are boring. Not here. Everything was written with such c harm and it also brought back my love of Fairy Tales. T his was a random find but sometimes random i s the best!
I would also say this book is an awful lot like The Selection although they do have some differences. As good as the character development is, I also like the descriptive writing of the time period and the castle, just about everything. The cover Art is also exquisite.
This is a read I would strongly recommended and a wonderful addition to my five star book list....more
