Welcome to the Garden Club: A Novel Jenny B. Tilbury
Rating and review to follow.
I just have to say..this one is about a garden club and it takes place in the French Quarter of New Orleans..I am getting serious wanderlust from this one as I have a thing about seeing every state and this book feels like your on vacation from the start. So much fun! If you like reading fun southern fiction, this is going to be one for you unless of coarse the whole book falls apart before I finish..not likely. OK..will stop gushing about this book but just look at the cover art! So much fun....more
I tried but maybe I have read to many books like this. For whatever reason, I could not be drawn into the story.
I felt it was quite complicated anDNF.
I tried but maybe I have read to many books like this. For whatever reason, I could not be drawn into the story.
I felt it was quite complicated and while actually really scary, also creepy, I was not involved in the story. I think I actually HAVE read just to many similiar books.
That is not to say mystery lovers wont enjoy t. For me, my main issue was it was overly long and I was also in a phase where I was getting burnt out on so many thrillers, all involving the same story line. One thing I will say about this book and it is a compliment because although I did not read it all I read most if it. It was genuinely scary. So fans of thriller/horror which is what, in my mind, this book fits into more then anything, will likely love it....more

I adored this with an enthusiasm that surprised me. I really did not know all that much about it going in. Celestial and Roy are in love and Newlyweds who are beginning their life together.
Due to horrible circumstances, Roy is arrested..and sentenced to a long prison sentence..for a crime he did not commit.
As the years go by, Roy waits to be out thinking of his wife who is his salvation.
In the case of Celestial however, as the years go by ,she discovers she cannot find within herself, the feelings of love she once held dear for her husband.
When Roy is unexpectedly released early, their relationship and their very being will be put to the ultimate test.
This book was so different then I thought it would be, as well as being so magnificently written. It examines the human heart and the feelings and motivations that lie deep inside it. It also takes a long, hard and deep look at Racial relations in Contemporary America. I was pulled in from the start and read it quickly. At the end, all I could think was "wow".
I could very much see this as a film and who knows maybe it will be. I enjoyed everything about An American Marriage and recommend it with as much heart as must have been put into writing it (and that means..with every fiber!). A magnificent read....more

It takes place primarily in New Orleans. It is a mystery, gritty and dark and filled with fun and odd characters and one twist after another.
Only gripe? I wanted to do a reread but the price is crazy..it is selling for like 50 bucks. I was a bit baffled by that and still am. Every now and again I check as I'd like to own a hard copy of this book....more

Nothing like secret societies and secret dares.
This was a fun dark edgy little piece of writing that I quite enjoyed. I liked also that it takes place in New Orleans as that added to the atmosphere.
And I liked the main character very much. This is a quick read and fun in its way. As YA mysteries go, it will not show you anything shockingly new but it will offer a few hours of fun and absorbing reading.
SPOILERS ABOUT THE END:
I have to discuss the end as my rating of three pertains to this fact.
I rate this 3.5 stars but my rating would have been higher but..was baffled by the end. I do not understand if it is meant to be a series but it did not say "part of a series" on the book. The ending, wile absolutely being shocking, was impossible to understand and that brought my rating down a bit.
I still enjoyed it. It's a fun if bewildering little mystery. I think fans of YA mysteries will enjoy it....more

The First Wife is a mystery and a Gothic novel. Bailey has just married a man she has known for only a short time. She goes to live with him on his large ranch. But people don't take to Bailey to well and she begins to learn things about her new husband that make her aware he maybe not such a nice guy. Actually that is putting it mildly! And someone may want Bailey out of her husband's life. Maybe permanently..
This was a good Gothic read. I liked the character of Bailey. And I liked the sprawling home where this whole mystery takes place. Added bonus is it takes place in Louisiana. The atmosphere was there and beautifully written.
The one thing that is not great is, it’s very predictable as a Gothic novel. If you read a lot of Gothic stories, this one is not going to be a major surprise.
Even though I did enjoy reading this, I did not love it. I thought it was not all that difficult to figure this one out. I'd have liked the pool of suspects to have been a bit larger. Also the middle half drags somewhat. I did find my attention wandering around that time.
Still it was atmospheric and a true Gothic read so if that's what you are looking for you will most likely enjoy this book....more
