I know I sound like a broken “The people who say New York never sleeps must have never visited Las Vegas.” ― Michelle Madow, The Secret Diamond Sisters
I know I sound like a broken record but......
The cover art, the cover art!
LOL...Part of the fun in reading are admiring the breath taking covers of certain books and this one certainly falls into that group.
Now...the book itself? Mixed feelings. (Why are all books that one has "mixed feelings about always somehow the ones that get a rating of 3?).
I kind of enjoyed it. I skimmed the first part because I found it dull but got into it during the second part. Still, it was a bit tough.
The thing is...this book is SO YA. It is not a mystery..it is about three sisters who inadvertently find out their dad is a famous and rich business executive from....where else? Vegas baby! And they have to go live with him since their other is in rehab for alcohol issues.
So imagine their surprise when they find their new home is....well.....a sprawling Vegas Hotel. And they have butlers. And credit cards with no cut off. And they can do anything and everything they want.
That is part of the issue. All they really want is to....well..drink...and flirt. Which is sort of what I wanted when I was younger. Except I'm not. Younger I mean. And it was kind of dull reading about ALL the girls' romantic problems.
I liked Savannah best. She had a sweetness about her that I really liked. But I could not keep all the guys straight. Even now...I cannot remember all their names and I just finished a little while ago.
There was Angelic Nick. And Brett. And Oliver whom I loathed. And the other one with the flashing eyes..what is it again? I think his name starts with A.
But the story is basically about all the love interests. And break ups, flirtations and new flirtations. I did like reading about all the pretty dresses the girls wear because I happen to dig fashion.
TO THE PEOPLE WONDERING...YEAH....underage drinking goes on ALOT...that was not that far out. And it is not just in Vegas.
I also did not know this was a series. Believe it or not..who knows? I may read part two.
The thing is...this is very light reading which was sort of nice after some of the books I have read lately. And I did love reading about the glitz of Vegas. So there is just no way I would ever rate this a one or two. In fact I'd probably have adored it when I was in high school.
It is a bit to YA for me and there was to much drinking, club hopping and boy swapping but it was not bad. I would hope the second one has a bit more depth and I have a feeling it probably will. Three stars is my rating. Five stars for the cover art....more
"as soon as people learned of my abilities, they started shunning me, as if I were a mind reader and a dangerous one at that. Couldn’t’ve been further"as soon as people learned of my abilities, they started shunning me, as if I were a mind reader and a dangerous one at that. Couldn’t’ve been further from the truth” ― Leslie Wolfe, Casino Girl
This book was gritty as a anything. It was my first time reading anything by this author but it will not be the last.
So I do love gritty pulpy crime dramas. This one fit the bill nicely. Baxter and Holt are partners and they are trying to solve the mystery of what happened to Crystal, an exotic dancer at a Las Vegas Casino/Hotel.
There are plenty of suspects to choose from. Throw in the glamour and glitz of Las Vegas..all described in detail..and the attraction surging between the two police partners and you get an exciting gritty page turner with non stop drama and new twists at every turn. I enjoyed it.
I must mention this is part of a series but can be read as a stand alone as well. I am going to go on and read others in the series and that is a big thing for me because I do not read series all that often.
I would recommend it. It is a fun gritty twisty crime novel with strong characters and a sizzling atmosphere. It is a bit long(my only quibble). I felt it could have been shorter. But it is a highly engaging book that will remind one of a Law and Order episode. (One of my favorite shows). Highly recommended....more

Legal drama. 3.5 stars.
Lindy and Mike have been a couple for a long time and also run a business together. When Lindy discovers Mike is having an affair all hell breaks loose and the couple breaks up.
Lindy sues Mike for half the business. The catch here is that these two were never married. They just lived together. So legally Lindy does not have a very strong case.
I enjoyed the first half of this way more then the second. Much of what goes on takes place in the court room and the reader gets to know the couple AND the Jury. I was drawn to the story as I like reading about Juries and what goes into picking them, what happens behind the scenes etc.
BUT:
SPOILERS:
I have to discuss the second half as well as the end. The truth is I read all kinds of genres. I like legal thrillers, liked this book very much and would have given it 4 stars if not for the change in tone and the end.
So first.. change in tone. Did not get that. The book turned crazy with all the twists and there is a Juror murdered and who did it ETC ETC.
Attorney on the water, showdown with the killer..etc. It just changed from a really thought provoking and fun legal story to yet another thriller. Loved the first half..not wild about the second half. I'd still recommend it though because it's such a fun book.
But then there is the ending. I did not understand it. The book spends the whole story telling of this wronged woman who built her husband's business into an empire, so at the end..she is strong and empowered..then the hubby's girlfriend leaves him, he comes crawling back and she says 'OK" and the end.
Did not get that. So in summary, it's a fun read, a thought provoking read, but not outstanding. I was ultimately a bit let down with where it chose to go but the first half was five stars so..legal book fans will most likely enjoy....more
