I ran into this by chance and it is one of the cutest books I have ever held in my paws ahm, hands. The story is just as it is described in the blurb, but the whole text and pics are just soooo cute! And so relatable, like, is it really the same "the other way round"?? And of course, mom was just right!...more

1 Stern....more

Maggie Bird is a chicken farmer in (imaginary) Purity, Maine, where she moved after retiring. This is what all of her neighbors know. What they do not know, is that she did not retire from just being an import analyst, but from the CIA, where she was Maggie Porter. This is only known to the “Martini Club”, her close circle of former colleagues who live close by. It does not seem to matter. That is, until that one day when a woman from the CIA shows up asking for Maggie’s input on a former colleague, Diane, who has gone missing. And that is, until the enquirer shows up again, in Maggie’s driveway, this time, dead. Tortured. Maggie knows that is must be related to that one operation she was in with Diane sixteen years ago, the one operation “Cyrano” that made her leave it all behind. And then, somebody starts shooting at her out in the fields. Local police chief-in-command Jo Thibodeau is bewildered by how unfazed Maggie is by all this, and does not accept any evasive answers. And answers are what Maggie and her group of friends are looking for...
In a German language review on Amazon, somebody wrote that the book was not really boring, but not exciting either. Indeed. It is very well read as an audio book, thus I was okay with it. I liked Maggie, though her group of friends serves more as a decoration. The story would work in much the same way with a group of retired cops or P.I.s. - minus the internal joke of the reader/listener knowing where that knowledge within their group comes from. But, yes. Not much of a spy story. Not much of a thriller either – one dead person in the beginning, a few shots, and then Maggie goes travelling into her past. Next shooting only in chapter 31 – no, not complaining about “not enough casualties”, only, that there is really not that much happening in between. It is not suspense, it just takes quite some time. Mystery, with an unpleasently gory scene with innocent goats. I am okay with gory, animals, children, or whatever - only: it stood quite out from the rest of the book here. Loads of dwelling in the past – will she stay with the CIA, will she leave, is it love, isn’t it, should she pull through the operation, or rather not. On end.
Basically, there is a lot of (at least an attempt at) tension building (not too much getting there), hinting at “that operation gone wrong”, until finally it is being revealed what went wrong, how and why. Seriously? Traumatic as this would have been, there is lots of breath wasted. And, basically, there was no operation gone wrong. The arrest did happen. There was not much caring about what happened after that. Apart from the one person that did care. I even guessed who might be behind it all – the whole story was more related to this closed group, and so I only guessed within that. And that development, well, that means this person must have gone from normal to “bad” within only six years? Not really buying it. It was like the rest of the book was like musings of a retired spy, some humor – and then, oops, we need an end and a solution. Tadaaa.
I liked Maggie, the tone of the story telling - but that was about it. Returned to audible. I made another attempt with Gerritsen on the very same day, to much less avail. There is one more on my book shelf. Must I?

Dabei gibt es durchaus einiges, was tiefer geht, weiter führt.
