Having some would have helped in understanding what was going on. Second there is a lot of repletion that isn't needed. The book could have used a really good editor. If there had been a bit more world building alone I would have bumped this up at least a star. Having said that it is cute. I liked the basic plot. The two MCs had a rough go in life and they still managed to gleam a bit of hope out there to go on. Lovely underlying ideas. ...more

Yes, they are teens and therefore juvenile but it was beyond that. The one thing I did like in the story was how much the author seemed to teach about some tenants of wicca. I didn't care for everything in the way she portrayed it but I learned some things. I won't continue the series....more

(I didn't cry or anything so you know it wasn't too bad since I cry over anything even slightly upsetting.) I loved the characters. I think the dual POV was a good choice because without it I am not sure how much I would have liked Dalton. Simon seemed very sheltered. I thought living in New York would have made him much tougher. He is a sweet soul. Dalton is just so young acting. He feels almost like a college aged boy. For all we know he might be mentally. I think the only niggles I had was not knowing how long Dalton or any of his group would live. The other I think the author is saving for another book so that is ok. I am excited to be finally starting this series....more

I didn't understand the whole using a different name. It seemed strange even with an explanation. I also thought there were too many characters that the authors tried to give a part. That drew away from the story and left my emotions too drawn out.
Ok, so now that I feel like I have made it seem like I really hated it. I did enjoyed it. I didn't love it and if I had read it I am not sure I would have made it through. I liked some of the bickering that went on. I also enjoyed the interactions between the two MCs at times. I am going to listen to the next in the series with the hope that it goes better with the second book....more

Here is a contemporary world that's society is run like the regency era. Very different. I enjoyed these two men that at first appear to be so opposite but in the end are very similar. There are twists and turns. We do get an ending but there is an overarching story line that is left hanging. I really look forward to the the next book in the series....more

I was confused by some of the writing. I thought maybe it was me since I sometimes have a hard time following high fantasy and writing similar. As I came to the end of the story I found out the author combined two books so I figure that might be part of my trouble. I do think there is instances where some detail comes in and is never explained which throws me out of the story.
Even with that though I enjoyed the story. Not as much as I might have hoped but still it was fun. I think I will in time try the other books in the series in the hopes they are a better fit for me....more

WAY too much of Marie Curie!!! I get it is the girl's idle but still... There was a lot that could have been trimmed from the story and not effected the story. There just seemed like too much blah, blah, blah. So yup, I got bored. Still was cute....more

There is still not a lot known about him. I thought we could have received more about him and understand his character more....more

They don't listen to each other go about talking to each other and are quite mean to each other. I was worried I would hate them the whole book. In the end the author does manage to take my mind off these behaviors long enough to enjoy the book and by the time the crisis passes the characters emerge better for it all. Do I think she redeemed the characters, no, but she made them more relatable. In the end I thought the book was actually well done....more

Now with all of this said one would think that the book would receive a bad rating from me. I just loved it though. Yes, totally outrageous and Leeland is no better than a middle schooler most of the time, but it is just SO fun. The story shouldn't work but it does. As I listened to the book I do think the narrator made all the difference for me. He made it come to life and the snark/sass just shine....more

How he did some of his antics just to distract others or to take their minds off whatever was going on. Finding out his background really deepened his character.
