I've realised while listening to this trilogy, that it feels as though it is written for the screen. The long winded descriptions are almost setting/staging and costume directions. Each book is more than 550 pages but seem longer. I couldn't help making a comparison to The Twilight series, 5 books all about the same length as the Deborah Harkness books, but much quicker reads and more exciting stories. Still worth reading for fantasy fans...more

3.5 stars. Listened on Audiobook. Firstly, I didn’t realise how long this book is when I started it. As other reviewers have noted It’s not immediately apparent why i liked or even finished this book. It’s not really exciting or suspenseful. The romance aspect is more sensual than overtly sexual. The author utilises most of the usual vampire and witch tropes; there are long descriptions and discussions on manuscripts and books and libraries. But it held my attention till the end and i will read the rest of the trilogy. ...more

It had an interesting take on the vampire myth, placing the story in a post apocalyptic world where vampirism is a plague. I didn’t hate this book but it was really bland, nothing like Holly Black’s usual style. No dramatic tension or suspense.
