If you like stories about firefighters or you like Robyn Carr's writing style, you'll probably like this book. Although it certainly wasn't the most exciting Robyn Carr book I've ever read (probably a PG in hotness), there was something about it that made it hard to put down. Maybe I'm just a sucker for RC, but the lady does know how to tell a story. This one's about a widowed 36 year old firefighter (Mike) who saves a down-on-her-luck, destitute, 27 year old divorcee (Chris) with two young kids from a house fire. He feels bad for her and since she has nowhere to go he invites her to stay at his house until she gets back on her feet. They're attracted to each other but a little hesitant to go there (although they do eventually). It's a little angsty, and I did have some problems with the heroine while she decided which direction she wanted her life to go and whether she was willing to take the risk and try to make a go of it with Mike (Yes! Give him a chance!) or return to the safe haven of her former life (spoiler). There's a couple of adorable kids (who Mike falls head-over-heels for) and an overbearing, controlling aunt who puts a kink in the budding relationship, but it all plays out pretty realistically. Mike and Chris have problems but try and learn how to deal with them. The ending had me tearing up (always a good sign of me being emotionally connected to the story) and imagining their future together. So, if you looking for a Robyn Carr book to read while you wait for the next in the Virgin River series, you might want to give this one a look. It's written in a similar style, so it made it as comfotable as an old shoe to read. And I can't complain, I got it for only 50 cents--and it was worth much more than that in reading pleasure! 4 stars.

I love Robyn Carr and her audiobooks because she always has great narrators.
This book was just good for me. I love second chance romances and both the main characters get theirs.
I don’t know if maybe because it seemed like there was a bit of a disconnect of emotions when talking about their pasts or what. But for me, it just didn’t feel like they were that heartbroken. I mean Mike’s past would have normally had this big softy have a tear but nothing notta. I felt bad but I didn’t feel the genuine emotions from him.
And with Christine well, I felt like she kept passing the buck. It wasn’t until the end where she took any kind of ownership of what happened to her. Also, the way she lets her aunt run all over her. I don’t know it was just good. Still glad I listened.

Started out well enough but got very repetitive once Aunt Flo showed up. Wow did I get tired of her fast. Not a lot happens in this story and it went in circles with pages of repetitive dialogue and zero outcome then you'd get some Robyn Carr magic to carry you through. This must be an early book of hers.

Men in Uniform Series by Silhouette Books
Sex level: mild
Five Stars
Chris is a divorced mother of two, working at a grocery store and living in a seedy rented house in Sacramento CA. She’s been trying her hand at writing a young adult novel, and only has a few more pages to go on the manuscript. She’s sure that this is the manuscript that will sell.
So when the smoke alarm goes off, and she sees smoke pouring out of the heating vents, she wakes her kids and gets them outside. Then she remembers her manuscript, and goes back into the house to save it. Unable to carry all her research outside, she crams her books and laptop into the refrigerator, hoping the insulation will protect her valuables from the fire.
Mike Cavanaugh is a big, burly Irish fireman. He’s first on the scene. Noting the flames coming out of the building, the children inform him that their mother is inside. He rushes in to save her, finding a woman with her head stuck in the refrigerator. Is she hungry?
After the fire is over, he invites her to stay a few days at his place. They soon learn that both of them are really hungry; hungry for love, hungry for acceptance, hungry for family.
Mike comes from a large Irish Catholic home. While the discussions with his parents aren’t exactly “religious” they are centered on faith, God’s will, and acceptance of things you can’t control. There’s a focus in this part of the book that is warming in a different type of way. You’ll want to curl up on Big Mike’s lap just like the children do, and listen to what he has to say in a gruff voice that doesn’t quite mask the way he feels.
The point, learned on Big Mike’s lap, or by Little Mike in a fire, or by Chris when her past comes back to haunt her, is that people always come first. A fireman is always concerned with life as a top priority. The rest of it can always be replaced.
The book is nicely written, with good pacing, and believable characters. I like it when a book has a point to make, as this one did, that makes you glad you read it, and a little stronger in your faith for having done so.

Mike Cavanaugh is a 36-year-old widower firefighter, he puts out fires and rescues people. Chris is a young 27-year-old divorcee, down and out of luck with 2 young children, vile little dog called Cheeky whose rented house catches on fire ….. guess who rescues her - if you guessed Mike score 1 for you! Having just moved into the Sacramento area Chrissy has no family, no friends and no money so she has no place to go with her 2 kids .. if you guessed that she moves in with Mike .. - if you guessed Mike score 1 for you! Chrissy and her kids fill a hole in Mike’s heart and house .. within days he does not want her to leave. But Chrissy has a hidden past that will come back to haunt her and interfere with this new relationship that she and Mike are developing.

I have enjoyed many Robyn Carr books and stories about second chances, but this book just did not do much for me. I found Chrissy to be whiny and at times, between an ex-husband and an overbearing Aunt I found her to spineless. I also felt Mike was afraid to lose Chrissy and the kids and could be a little controlling.

The best I can give this book is 2 ½ stars. I think I need to give Robyn Carr books a little rest time.

I always enjoy Therese Plummer as a Narrator.

Sadly, this story made no sense. Written in1989, when maybe there weren't home squatters, firefighter gives rescued chick, key his house. She's actually an heiress who squandered her trust fund money, divorced with two kids and a dead end grocery job. She fancies herself as a writer, albeit unpublished. She's on the lamb from wealthy Aunt Flo. She'd sued her for the trust money, her ex husband extorted anyway unbeknownst to her. Now Mike wants to rescue her, and she's fine with that. But when Aunt Flo turns up with cash, Chrissie won't be as dependent on him. He's recovering from loss of his wife and child, so that why he glommed into Chrissie. Carr picks a surname from history for her, Palmer. if the Palmers of Chicago. Such a rich family exists, but furniture store heiress Chrissie isn't that uber high society. There's much back and forth between the wealthy Aunt and middle class, Mike. Turns out he's mighty difficult. Chrissie already had one bad marriage, but has no problem dealing with a guy, who sees himself as being from the wrong side of the tracks and sensitive. The ending is pretty rushed without resolution of communication problems among the main characters

This is romance at its best. The sole focus is on the personalities. No villain, no suspense, no paranormal talents or beings, just individuals connected to each other and to the world at large by emotions.

Chrissie and Mike have been wounded by life, and must heal enough to grow past the fear of being hurt again in order to open up and trust their growing love to last. Each of them have friends and family whose input forwards the plot.

What more could one ask?

The only thing that kept this from being a five-star read for me is the restriction of the Silhouette Special Edition format, limiting the length of the story, the depth of subplot, and the amount of detail that could be included in the love scenes. Perhaps one day Carr will pull a Catherine Coulter and do a re-write and re-release.

Enjoy!

Really, 2 1/2 stars, I rounded down. Kind of average, too many religious references, although it's not a religious book.

I like Mike, I grew to like Chris. The enmeshed family he had seemed good, but enmeshed means there was more to their story, it's not all positive.

Chris is too afraid, running away when they argued? Ridiculous. The story was too simple, the characters and relationships a bit odd.

Won't be reading more of her books, OK, not great.

Chrissie is down on her luck. Abandoned and stripped of her money by her husband, and then if that wasn't bad having her rented home burn down. Then enters firefighter Mike who offers his home to her and her kids till she get herself together. This was a sweet novel where both parties had emotional suffering and seeing how they fight through. Wonderful read love Ms. Carr books.

Informed Risk by Robyn Carr 512/505 pages
bonus book: A Hero For Sophie Jones by Christine Rimmer starting at page 268 out of 505

Genre: Contemporary Romance, Emergency Services - Firefighters, Chick Lit, Harlequin

Featuring: Sex - some details mild compared to Virgin River, Sacramento, California, Single Mom, Irish Catholics, Children, Firefighters, Money Problems

Rating as a movie: R for sexual content

My rating:⭐⭐⭐⭐

Synopsis: A single mother loses her house in a fire and is invited to move into a firefighter's home.

My thoughts: Pg. 142 - I think this is going to be a single sitting read.
Pg. 268 - Informed Risk ⭐⭐⭐⭐½
Pg 281 - A Hero For Sophie Jones DNF

Informed Risk ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ This book was almost 5 stars but had a few shortcomings. I was shocked it was written in 1989, it didn't feel very 89 to me and could've been in 2000 in my opinion although 89 does explain the phone thing, unless they updated the story for republishing it didn't feel aged at all. For a single mom the kids would conveniently disappear, especially the youngest one, like a sitcom. Mike Cavanaugh sounded very familiar, so much I wondered if his named gad vern used elsewhere, just the surname to my surprise. His family reminded me of a cross between the Riordan clan of Virgin River and the Callaghan clan of Things You Save in a Fire, that phrase was even used in this book, since the books are published 20 years apart I decided to assume it's stereotypes that made them similar. The phrase informed risk was used 3 times, all in the second half of the book. This book was fun and more enjoyable than some of her other older titles.

A Hero For Sophie Jones (Jones Gang #9): "Sophie B. Jones" "She looked as sweet as a milk maid..." I honestly did not want to read this book but I felt it was important to finish it since it was part of a double feature. However this book is horrific, comma I didn't even make it through the 1st chapter and they were already eye loving each other. Insta-romance isn't my thing but I'm usually okay with it. I just can't take so much cheese in large doses. DNF on page 281.

Recommend to others?: Yes. I loved Informed Risk, I've read all of the Robyn Carr books I could find, which the exception of her historical romances, this one is one of her better ones. I will not endorse or encourage the reading of A Hero For Sophie Jones, I think it was out of print for a reason.

If you love, what do you have to give up?

This is the story of a firefighter who lost his wife and daughter to a car accident. This is the story of a woman who loved a con artist who stole all her inheritance, then left her with 2 children and no money to support them. She took low paying jobs, while struggling to establish herself as an author. She rents a house that is in poor condition, and the first cold spell the furnace sets the house on fire and she and the children lose everything but her laptop and the clothes on their backs.

Of course he rescues her, offers her his house, buys clothes, toys and food. Each finds the things missing in their life in the other, but their histories get in the way.

The struggle to compromise, fight and find their way past their histories is well written, moving and believable.

Pretty good. I liked Mike and his family but Chrissie drove me bonkers. Took her a long time to stop over thinking every damn thing. It's no wonder she had no one, she pushes everyone away, keeps them at arms length and is SO cynical. She was actually bugged out because Mike bought condoms. Even after he explained he wasn't presumptuous just hopeful. She focused on every little thing and made it out to be a huge bad thing. She went to him and kissed him first. She was so busy holding onto her pride she forgot to be grateful for what he was offering. Which was a roof over her kids head, food and friendship. HE LOST HIS WIFE AND KID FFS. Yet here she is whining because he's trying to help without pissing her off. Understanding her independence yet still being loving. She was so walled off.

A very sweet book in many ways this book is not part ofd a series and was written in 1989. Chris Palmer and her two young children are struggling in the Sacramento area. The old house they are renting catches on fire. In an effort to salvage her laptop she runs back into the burning buildingFiare Captain Mike Cavanaugh runs in and resumes her. She is without and he offers his home for she and her family to stay until her life is more settled. They become close. Then a story about her background is revealed. Her Aunt Flo gets back into the picture. Tensions heat up between Chris and Mike. The ending is up in the air.

Ten years after the death of his wife and daughter, firefighter, Mike Cavanaugh still hasn't completely gotten over losing them. Then during a bad fire he rescues Christine Palmer. She and her two young children have no one and no place to go so he offers his place. Definitely leery of this offer but with no place to go Chris accepts the offer. That is when the story starts to heat up. I love Robyn Carr's style of writing and have not found a book of her that I didn't like. I loved every minute of this one and was sorry to see it end.

"Informed Risk" by Robyn Carr narrated by Therese Plummer
Yes. I loved this story. It broke my heart a few times, because I tend to feel the emotions of the characters that make up a story. Oh, I had my chuckles and smiles, too. This story is good enough that I will enjoy reading it again. I have had this audiobook in my TBR stash for a while. So glad it rose to the top. This writer/narrator are a good match. "Informed Risk" just may give you a greater appreciation for those whose jobs are to protect us and our belongings when we are in great need. Happy Reading ! !

Never a disappointment in Robyn Carr's books !

I have read majority of Robyn Carr's books and every single one of them has a different story line and is rewarding to read. They are never typical and never a disappointment! This one was heart wrenching and grabbed my emotions and wouldn't let go. I could not put it down. Her writing Is beyond compare. I wanted to wrap my arms around Chrissie and the children and Mike. Then the next minute I wanted to shake Chrissie. I definitely wanted to smack Flo. I really didn't want the story to end.

No backbone required

I would like to say that I enjoyed this book.but I can't. The main female character was way too needy yet she kept saying g that she wasn't. She wanted to be independent yet she was certainly not and had no backbone once she came into money. I just kept skipping pages, hoping it would get better but it didn't. Very big disappointment in this Robyn Carr book, expected better.

Umm.. yeah. I hate Mike. He got insecure because Christine had money and all of a sudden she wasn’t some poor helpless woman who needed a “big strong man” to provide. Can you say misogynistic patriarchal pig? Yeah this book didn’t hit. I had no connection to Mike especially.. when he spoke about the death of his family my asshole brain was like “probably karma” then he acting like a complete brute that gave me the ick.

Oplæser: Therese Plummer. 5 stjerner.

- men måske for sød? Ihvertfald fangede den mig ikke helt som jeg er vant til med Carr.

Cute story about a woman with two small children was rescued by a firefighter and with no place to go, offered them his home. He was still grieving the lost of his wife and daughter in car accident 10 years ago. He comes alive caring for this woman and her children even though he comes to find out she is not the destitute person he perceived to be. The story is a quick read.

Christine Palmer’s house caught fire because of a defective furnace. She and her two children are suddenly homeless with all of their possessions gone. Firefighter Mike Cavanaugh offers to let them stay at his house until Chris can figure out her next step. Mike lost his wife and daughter in a car accident 10 years ago. Having Chris and her children in his house feels way too comfortable.

It was an ok story but nothing great and the ending was lacking. Once Mike finds out Chris comes from family money, he completely changes and becomes extremely insecure. Chris doesn't handle it well at all. Then to me the ending was rushed, dumb (Chris' actions made no sense at all; she was all over the place) and didn't make much sense. I don't think it really wrapped things up well.

Loved this book.

This story reminded me of my family when we all were at home together all nine of us kids . we had the many differences in opinions and in age groups . now that we are old with kids and grandchildren of our own it is hard to adjust to each person s individual family when we get to gather .thanks for putting a big family in the story.
