“ | You know what this is. She has a boyfriend. She's angry at us for being strict. I've seen this a lot in foster care. I need to talk to her. | „ |
~ Sharma trying to get out of a statutory rape allegation. |
Ajay Sharma is the main antagonist of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Sightless in a Savage Land". He was the foster father of Nydia Davis and the prime suspect in her rape.
He was portrayed by Bhavesh Patel.
Background[]
He and his wife Ranni frequently volunteer as foster parents to help lost children in the system. They were seen as model parents by others. Beneath his philanthropic image, however, he is a pedophile who manipulates his victims into having sex with him by tricking them into believing he is in love with them.
He grooms his latest victim, 13-year-old Nydia Davis, by taking her to visit her disabled biological father in the VA hospital. In the process, he gains the admiration of the father; after he gains her trust, he has sex with her.
In Sightless in a Savage Land[]
He eventually got Nydia pregnant and she informed him, believing they would be a family. However, Ajay was aware he'd be exposed once the baby was born and pretended to be overjoyed while planning his next move. He secretly gave her abortion pills by slipping them in her smoothies, though she found out and proceeded to run away from home.
After SVU were called in, Ajay is visited by the detectives and lies that he witnessed Nydia being abducted in a van. However, Nydia is soon found and brought to the hospital, where she tells the cops that she and Ajay are in love. This led to an investigation of Ajay and his true intentions.
When Ajay is brought in for questioning, he lies to Detectives Fin Tutuola and Amanda Rollins that the kidnapping was a ruse to get people to locate Nydia. He is then informed about the pregnancy and accusation against him, with him stating that she is protecting her boyfriend and acting out. However, the detectives do not believe him, especially when he refuses to volunteer his DNA and requests a lawyer. While observing the interrogation, Captain Olivia Benson, Assistant District Dominick Carisi, Jr., and Deputy Chief Christian Garland take note of his calmness, and the latter suggests that he might be telling the truth, taking into account Nydia's troubled history and his reputation. Ultimately, however, they discover his guilt when they search his computer history and confirm that he knew of the pregnancy and was the one who gave her the abortion pills. With that, he is arrested for multiple counts of statutory rape.
In court, he pleads not guilty, but Carisi requests that he be remanded in custody, due to the need to investigate his home further. Despite his lawyer's insistence, the judge orders him sent to Rikers Island Prison. As Ajay is taken into prison custody, he is confronted by Nydia's vengeful biological father, Mickey, who shoots him three times, killing him. Mickey is convicted of murdering Ajay, but is given a sentence of only three years in prison because of mitigating circumstances, especially the heinousness of Ajay's crimes.
Trivia[]
- Ajay is loosely based on Rick Hazel, a Florida foster father arrested in 2019 for sexually abusing children in his care.
