Abilisks are minor antagonists in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. They are multi-dimensional tentacled creatures that are particularly known for feeding off on batteries.

Biography[]

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2[]

According to the High Priestess Ayesha, one of the Abilisks appeared on the planet to feed on the planet's batteries, so she hired the Guardians to kill the Abilisk in exchange for delivering the wanted criminal Nebula to them.

As part of their plan, the Guardians set up a trap for the Abilisk by awaiting for its return to feed more on the batteries. Despite a lengthy fight, the Abilisk was way too strong for the Guardians, even swallowing Drax due to his foolish attempt to cut it on the inside, much to the other Guardians' annoyance.

Eventually, Star-Lord spotted a cut on the Abilisk's neck, deducing it as a weak point. To that end, he and Rocket use their jet packs to make the Abilisk look up into the sky, allowing Gamora to draw her sword and stuck it into the cut, cutting the creature's neck open and setting Drax free. The Abilisk collapsed to the floor, succumbing to blood loss, much to the Guardians' delight.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3[]

The High Evolutionary has three Abilisks on his ship, which he has locked in a pit. After he captured Mantis, Drax and Nebula, he throws them in with the Abilisks and opens the cage, so that the Abilisks could kill them, but Mantis uses her empathic power to tame them. The Abilisks help them escape and are brought to Knowhere. Later, they follow Mantis on her self-discovery journey.

James Gunn described Abilisks as similar to "a pink-naked mouse" or "the inside of an old man's ear".
The visual effects and style of an Abilisk's matter waves were inspired by Gunn's collaboration with Suda51 in the video-game Lollipop Chainsaw.
It’s possible that they were created by The High Evolutionary, given he kept three of them in a pit on his ship.
