Sky Deck (Knuckles)

Sky Deck (スカイデッキ Sukai Dekki?) is an Action Stage that appears in Sonic Adventure, its enhanced port Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut and the 2010 remaster of the game. It is the eighth Action Stage played as Sonic, the fourth Action Stage as Tails, and the fifth and final Action Stage as Knuckles. It takes place on the outer decks of the Egg Carrier. As with most other Action Stages in its games, Sky Deck has different level designs for each character, which have three optional missions each.

Description[]

Overall, Sky Deck is a massive complex ship that serves as a transportation in the Egg Carrier. The first section in Sonic and Tails' versions of this Action Stage takes place on the lower deck of the Egg Carrier. Here, the background occasionally takes on a light blue form, or a dark sky. This area is covered with climbable canisters, ladders, and cannons. Most paths are accessible using the canisters, ladders, hangers, and spinners. There are also mini cannons that attempt to shoot at the player.

The second section in Sonic's Sky Deck takes place on the massive wing of the Egg Carrier. However, most of the parts here are mainly the same as the previous section.

The third section in Sonic and Knuckles' Sky Deck takes place inside the Egg Carrier's wing. This area is mainly similar to the previous sections, but now adds a gravity manipulation to it. There is also some sort of joystick (in Knuckles' version) to alter the gravity.

Story[]

Sonic the Hedgehog[]

After Sonic and Tails infiltrate the Egg Carrier to rescue Amy, they enter the Sky Deck due to Eggman changing the ship's shape to prevent easy access to the bridge. There, the two destroy two gigantic cannons blocking their way. After that, the two enter the Sky Deck's wing and manage to find the exit.

Miles "Tails" Prower[]

After Tails and Sonic infiltrate the Egg Carrier to rescue Amy, they enter the Sky Deck due to Eggman changing the ship. There, the two have a race to reach and destroy a capsule nearby. In the end, Tails wins.

Knuckles the Echidna[]

After Knuckles infiltrates the Egg Carrier, he heads to the Sky Deck to find the Emerald Shards. There, he finds three Emerald Shards.

Gameplay[]

In Knuckles' version of Sky Deck, there is a joystick of sorts sticking up from the ground which he can then push to adjust the heading of the aircraft. Depending on which way this joystick is titled, the gravity in the Action Stage will shift, causing different alterations to the environment, thereby either opening new paths or creating other forms of obstacles.

Overview[]

Sonic the Hedgehog[]

In the first section of Sonic's version of Sky Deck, the objective is to reach the end of the underside of the large wing, where a giant active cannon stands in the way. After being launched from a large cannon mounted to the side of the main body of the ship underneath the wing, the player must cling to circular canisters and cross steel rigging hanging above empty air below to gradually make their way towards the large cannon at the wing tip, passing through two midway points that separate the three sections of the wing on the way in the form of a small hanger and a group of mini cockpits. The route here mainly consists of flying chopper bots, as well as occasional segments where drop down mini cannons will attempt to destroy the walkways out from underneath the duo. Afterwards reaching the underside of the tip of the wing, which is completely dominated by a large hanging three story square shaped scaffolding of sorts around the massive central cannon; run along it while avoiding the cannons walkway destroying fire, until Sonic is face to face with it, in which case a single rocket must be fired into the barrel to finish the first part.

Afterwards, Sonic apparently jumps through the wreckage of the cannon, ending up on the top of the wing where the Egg Carrier's periodic altitude changes become far more deadly, each of Dr. Eggman's speed changes whipping up powerful winds that threaten to throw Sonic overboard if he does not grab on to something. From here, the player starts on the very tip of the wing, and must move to the first large wing section where the remains of the destroyed under-cannon now sit towards the main body of the ship, avoiding fire from the many other automatic and single shot energy cannons scattered about the airfoil as they make their way towards a raised section where they can climb up to move to the middle section of the wing. Grapple plates on the floor, as well as a large tower assembly of sorts with a scrolling light bar around the base; both functioning perfectly as hold points if the player is caught by strong winds. Once they have reached the monkey bars leading up to the second part, the tip and everything on it is then apparently destroyed, falling away as the player must race collapsing segments of the large hanger here while constantly released mini airships plague him with missile payloads. Once at the end, leaping into the third and final section of the wing (which is also the very beginning of the stage on the underside) to battle yet another giant cannon, though this time with the cannon randomly firing at different areas, forcing the player to have to pick the Rocket the cannon is currently aiming at in order to not miss. After taking this second cannon out.

In the next area, Sonic must deal with scripted changes in gravity the closer he gets to the goal. These changes in gravity are generally quite severe, as the whole Action Stage can turn on its side and forcing Sonic to use handrails as monkey bars. This area ends when Sonic reaches the roof assembly above the six door pit with the handrails where he can drop to the capsule to release its Animals.

Miles "Tails" Prower[]

Knuckles the Echidna[]

Knuckles' version of Sky Deck takes place in Sonic's third section. The Action Stage here is identical to Sonic's beyond the altitude manipulation. For Knuckles, the Action Stage starts leading the player right next to the gravity-controlling joystick. Turning it into a downwards pitch and causing gravity to pull the player towards the large opening at the rear (though they will not fall out of it, no matter the pitch), or into an upwards pitch that causes gravity to pull towards the entrance of this stage. Meanwhile, tilting the joystick left or right will tilt the Egg Carrier that way accordingly. Left causing the doors in the storage pit nearest to the rear opening at the rear of this area to spill barrels, as well as the rail mounted boxes further ahead of that to shift to the left accordingly, while right does the opposite. Ceasing the barrels and shifting the boxes to the right. Tilting the plane down, or pushing the joystick forward causes the six doors beneath the joystick platform on the wall here to spill random personal items and ship equipment like mops, buckets, sandals, and even robomaids while pulling it back stops this.

This area ends when Knuckles finds the three Master Emerald shards.

SKY Deck Damage

The damaged hanger area, from Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut.

  • In the second part when Sonic is running across the top of the left wing, the tip is visibly destroyed along with parts of the hanger portion. However, upon returning to the Egg Carrier Adventure Field, if the player changes the ship back to its transformed mode (Sonic Adventure DX only), the left wing will still be intact. The same happens if the player looks at it while it is tucked against the side of the ship in normal mode.
  • According to an interview with Shiro Maekawa, this Action Stage was the hardest for him to design.[1]
  • In Tails' version of the stage, the fox cub races against Sonic for the fourth and final time, as his next and last stage has him racing against Eggman.
