Slogan

Lilycove City is a location introduced in Generation III.

Description[]

Lilycove City is a city located in the northeastern part of the Hoenn region, connected by Route 124 in the east and Route 121 in the west. However, the path to Route 124 is blocked by several Wailmers until the player character completes the Team Magma Hideout ROR or Team Aqua Hideout SAS at the northeast of Lilycove City.

Besides the villain hideout, Lilycove City has a variety of visitable areas. There is a Contest Hall, which hosts Master Rank Pokémon Contests in Pokémon Ruby Version and Pokémon Sapphire Version and all Contests in Pokémon Emerald Version. To the east of the Contest Hall is Cove Lily Motel, which is empty until after Team Magma and Team Aqua flees Lilycove City, with staff members of Game Freak moving in by the time the player becomes the Pokémon Champion. To the north is the Lilycove Museum, which has art presented on display. To the east of the Lilycove Museum is the Lilycove Department Store, the largest store of the Hoenn region. To the east of the Lilycove Department Store is the home of the only Move Deleter in the Hoenn region, and to the south is the usual Pokémon Center, which is otherwise normal but has the Pokémon Center Ladies trio in Pokémon Emerald Version that give rewards by record mixing with other players. To the southeast of the Move Deleter's House is the Pokémon Trainer Fan Club, where fans discuss popular Pokémon Trainers, including the player once they enter the Hall of Fame. At the southwest of Lilycove City is the Lilycove City Harbor, where the player can embark on the S.S. Tidal to travel to Slateport City, as well as the Battle Frontier in Pokémon Emerald Version.

After the events at Seafloor Cavern, Lilycove City is affected by extremely harsh sunlight (in Pokémon Ruby Version and Pokémon Omega Ruby) or heavy rain (in Pokémon Silver Version and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire) until the player battles Kyogre or Groudon at the Cave of Origin in Sootopolis City. The music is also replaced with the flood theme or the drought theme while the respective weather is in effect, like with Mossdeep City, Sootopolis City, and Routes 124 through 131.

In the northwest of Lilycove City is a Gentleman who gives the player one of ten random Berries daily: Cheri Berry, Chesto Berry, Pecha Berry, Rawst Berry, Aspear Berry, Leppa Berry, Oran Berry, Persim Berry, Lum Berry, or Sitrus Berry. He does not appear during harsh weather conditions.

In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire only, the Memory Girl is located next to the Pokémon Center, and she has the ability to read a Pokémon's memories with its Original Trainer. Another fan club was added, the Contest Spectacular Trainer Fan Club, which consists of fans of Lisia. Additionally, a vending machine was added behind the Lilycove City Harbor that sells only Soda Pop at Poké Dollar300 each.

Lilycove City has a total population of 123 in Pokémon Ruby Version and Pokémon Sapphire Version, 138 in Pokémon Emerald Version, and 106 in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire. In all three Generation III games, Lilycove City is the most populated city of the Hoenn region, but in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, this title was given to Mauville City.

Appearances[]

Anime[]

Ash and his friends arrived in Lilycove City in "Pokéblock, Stock, and Berry". Originally, they were just passing through the city because it was en route to Mossdeep City, the location of Ash's next Gym battle. However, after May saw a poster advertising an upcoming Pokémon Contest, scheduled to be held in the city the next day, they decided to stay in Lilycove so May could compete for her third Ribbon.

Later, during the Ever Grande Conference, Ash battles Lilycove native Katie in the first round of the full battle stage. Despite Katie's main strategy putting Ash in an early hole, Ash manages to emerge victorious in the end.

Trivia[]

NPC Reaction to Flood

Sailor in Lilycove City reacting to flood after Kyogre's awakening in Alpha Sapphire.

  • Lilycove City's name comes from "lily green" and "cove" (a type of coastal landmark). Minamo City, its Japanese name, comes from  水藻 minamo (water algae).
  • As Hoenn is based on Kyūshū, Lilycove City is based on Kanoya.
  • In Pokémon Platinum Version, the Audio System item for the Villa plays a bossanova arrangement of Lilycove City's theme.
  • Lilycove City's English motto, "Where the land ends and the sea begins," is the exact same as the motto of the city of Homer, Alaska.
  • After the awakening of Kyogre or Groudon, the resulting extreme weather affects outdoor NPCs in Lilycove City and Mossdeep City, and with the exception of the Memory Girl in Lilycove City, whose dialogue changes during the extreme weather. [1]
