Sootopolis City is a city in the Hoenn region, surrounded by the Route 126. The player character needs to use Dive outside of battle in Route 126 to reach Sootopolis City; later, they can directly Fly to Sootopolis City.

In Pokémon Emerald Version, when Kyogre and Groudon were awakened by Team Aqua and Team Magma respectively, the two Pokémon appeared in the city's lake and battled each other until Rayquaza intervened and becalmed them.

Sootopolis City is also the location of Hoenn's Water-type based gym.

Description[]

The city of Sootopolis has an overhead view of the sky shaped like a crater, a preservation of what was there before the city came to be. Sootopolis is built with staircases that lead to different parts of the city.

History[]

Sootopolis City is built in the crater of an extinct volcano^RSE or a meteor impact^ORAS, which soon filled with water during rainfall. Within the city is the Cave of Origin, guarded by one of the town's citizens. Sootopolis may be where the cataclysmic battle between Groudon and Kyogre fought thousands of years ago, implied by its subtle connection to Mt. Pyre. As quoted by the guarding citizen, "The spirits of Pokémon, becalmed at Mt. Pyre, are said to be revived here."

• This is the only town in the Pokémon games that requires the move Dive to first enter it.
• A young non-playable girl, Kiri, is named after Junichi Masuda's daughter, who was born before the development of the Generation III games.
• Sootopolis City's name comes from "soot" (black dust resulting from fires or volcanic eruptions) and the suffix "-opolis," often used in city names. Its Japanese name, Rune (pronounced "roo-nay," not "roon") City, comes from 流 (ru, flow) and 涅 (netsu, black underwater soil).
• As Hoenn is based on Kyūshū, Sootopolis City is based on Yakushima. Its architectural style is similar to that of Santorini, a city in Greece.
