"Hey! Good luck out there, man!"

Margo Kess, also known by her vigilante alias Spider-Byte, is a cyber Spider-Person who was formerly affiliated with Miguel O'Hara's Spider Society. Margo was in charge of the Go-Home Machine before her departure from the society and now operates as one of the members of Gwen Stacy's Spider-Gang.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

In world where humans predominantly spend their lives online, Margo Kess decided to become a vigilante and operated under the name Spider-Byte. She would be recruited by Ghost Spider to join the Spider-Army in order to participate in the final push against the Inheritors in Earth-616A's Transamerica Pyramid.

Spider-Society[]

At some point in time Margo was recruited by Miguel O'Hara to join his Spider-Society and would go on to spend most of her days as an avatar at HQ. Margo is considered one of the most valuable members of the Spider Society[2] as she is responsible for operating the Go-Home-Machine with LYLA and is the creator of Margosoft: the software used at Headquarters. [3] She uses her prominent role in the Spider Society as a means to escape the chaos of her domestic life. At the Society, Margo would encounter various variants of the same Spider-People she had worked with while in the Spider-Army including variants of Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy.

Margo talks to Miles

Margo meets Miles

One day while working at the society, Margo would encounter Miles Morales who was accompanied by her peers Hobie Brown and Gwen Stacy. Margo would quickly befriend Miles, sharing a bit about her life in Earth-22191 and how she prefers being at the Spider-Society. Miles empathizes with her as he understands her need to escape the daily pressure that comes with juggling family and responsibility. Miles watches the Go-Home Machine start up, curious about how it operates. Margo demonstrates how the machine works by sending a variant of the Rhino home. After the demonstration, Miles expresses his hope to see Margo again before being tugged away by a jealous Gwen. Margo wishes him good luck on his way out.

Joining the Spider-Gang[]

Margo tries to find out

Margo attempts to find out what's wrong with the machine

As the Society chased Miles, Margo stayed behind to watch the machine. However, when Miles activated the machine Margo tried to deactivate it until she saw her friend inside it. Margo became conflicted until she ultimately decided to let Miles go back to his home universe. After Miles left, Margo began to question the Spider-Society, especially when Miguel kicked Gwen out and sent her back to her universe. Margo would be one of the Spider-People who Gwen would recruit to join the reformed version of the Spider-Gang to help save Miles after he got sent to the wrong universe, as well as stop the Spot from destroying the Multiverse.

Personality[]

Margo is shown to be very tech-savvy, and shows an extensive amount of knowledge surrounding technology. she is able to be at the society via VR and is in charge of bringing variants of villains back to their own dimensions via the Go-Home-Machine. Margo is also a very intelligent individual, while also having a more sarcastic side to her, such as when she first encounters Miles. She also appears to have some issues in her home life as evidenced by her yelling parents and desire to stay in the society more often.

While she was apart of the Spider-Society, and was trying to stop the Go-Home-Machine from sending Miles home, when she found out that he was in there, she let him escape, proving that she has a good heart. This is further shown by her desire to help Gwen and the rest of the Spider-Gang find Miles by joining the team.

Trivia[]

  • At difference from the most characters in the Spider-Verse saga, this version of Margo Kess is the same character at depicted on the comics.
  • It's not directly stated that Margo Kess left the Spider-Society in Across the Spider-Verse but considering that by the end of the film, we see her with some Spider-People that have left the society (including Gwen Stacy and Hobie Brown) it is pretty clearly implied.
    • Due to Margo being the one to unknowingly send Miles to the wrong universe, it is likely that Margo is aware of the name of the universe Miles was sent to.
  • Margo Kess is the only member of the reformed Spider-Gang whose history and relationship with the other Spider-People is largely unknown as Miles is the only one she's seen interacting with.
    • Considering she was a member of the Spider-Society, it can be assumed that she was at least on good enough terms with Miguel to get recruited however this was never seen nor confirmed.
      • While unlikely, it is possible that the Digital Space Margo is Spider-Byte in allows her to transverse the multiverse similar to the world mechanic seen in many video games and since she's not actually in said dimension, she does not suffer any side effects. This could mean she just crashes in Miguel's dimension without his permission. However since she is a spider-person and assists the society, he allows it. As mentioned earlier though, this feels unlikely as the digital space most likely doesn't have the means or ability to traverse universes. However, if this is the case it would explain why Margo was the only Spider in the Society to not participate in the chase for Miles Morales as she would not have one of the Watches needed to receive Miguel's communication.
