Mercenary Fortress is a location from Fire Emblem Awakening. It is the stronghold of the Sage Nelson, a member of the Grimleal, and the backdrop for Paralogue 10.
Profile[]
Mercenary Fortress is a large castle found in the north of an island off the west coast of Ylisse. Where other bandit hideouts in Awakening are the crumbling homes of former noble houses and military forts, Mercenary Fortress is a powerfully built structure, either sturdy enough to have withstood years of coastal storms and political turmoil or recently constructed. Despite being located within the presumed borders of Plegia, the Mercenary Fortress is decorated in Valmese red, as Nelson is a former Valmese general. Though the before battle conversation takes place in a verdant field, Mercenary Fortress is actually in the middle of a sandy plain, a wasteland either on the coast or part of the desert that covers most of western Ylisse. Presumably, there is a village in a forest nearby, from which Nelson steals valuables to hoard in Mercenary Fortress.
Story[]
When Chrom overhears some villagers talking about a Valmese general, he rushes to aid those being terrorized by Nelson. Arriving at the Fortress, he finds it crawling with Grimleal and other enemies. Among them is Severa, who conspires to free herself and an expecting father named Holland from forced servitude to Nelson.
If Severa is able to talk to Holland, she convinces him to flee, then joins the Shepherds in their fight against Nelson. If she is unable to rescue him before one of the Shepherds attacks him, she will change from ally to enemy. If Cordelia or Chrom speaks to Severa before she reaches Holland, she will ask them to help her save him.
There are two chests on this map. One is up near the northeast corner and contains a Levin Sword. The other is near the center of the map on the west side, and contains a Bullion (M). A single Master Key is provided by an enemy on this map, forcing the army to choose between the chests if they did not bring along a unit with the Locktouch skill or an extra key for the second chest.
After battling through the Grimleal and their reinforcements to slay Nelson, Severa finds the ring she had been planning to steal from Nelson all along, a ring that once belonged to her mother, Cordelia. Recognizing the ring, Cordelia readily accepts that she has a daughter, and tells Severa that she wants nothing more than to build a world where she can grow up happy and strong.
Trivia[]
- Mercenary Fortress is found on the island that was once the Kingdom of Grust first seen in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light. It is unclear whether it is a structure that remains from this time.
