The Poppy Fields are a location within the Land of Oz. They are meadows full of beautiful but deadly flowers called poppies, whose odor can cause anyone who breathes it to fall asleep, possibly for forever. However, inorganic beings are immune to the poppies and can walk through the field safely due to their absence of lungs.
In Oz the Great and Powerful, the Poppy Fields is used as part of a battle tactic by the Ozians' rebellion against the Wicked Witch of the East's tyranny by luring the majority of the Winged Baboons into them, substantially limiting her forces.
In The Muppets' Wizard of Oz, the Poppy Fields is the hottest nightclub in Oz, and is a modern reworking of the original poppy field. It features blacklit, neon-colored signs and dim lighting to create an atmosphere of decadence. Clifford serves as bouncer, with the Electric Mayhem as house band.
The intoxicating poppies cause patrons to slumber, and many seem permanently trapped, including Mulch, Zondra, and Zippity Zap.
The Poppy Fields appear in the episode "Ruby Slippers". Needing to put Zelena to sleep, Dorothy travels there with Ruby, where she picks a poppy for her, sparking their romance together.
Trivia[]
While the Poppy Fields do not appear in The Pirate Fairy, it is indirectly alluded to by Rosetta when she mentions that she "never works with poppies, the pollen makes her sleepy" - a trait of these poppies in TheWizard of Oz and Wicked, in which both Megan Hilty and Kristin Chenoweth (Rosetta's voice actresses) have performed as Glinda.
