"Opening Doors" is the fourteenth episode of Monsters at Work. It premiered on April 13, 2024, and is the fourth episode of season two.

Synopsis[]

Johnny takes Tylor on a tour of Fear Co. When Tylor is late returning from his visit, Val must cover for him.

Plot[]

Val helps Tylor prepare for when he runs into Johnny again, trying to get him to politely turn down the scare position. Meanwhile, Cutter is confronted by her work rival Suzie "Sunny" Sunshine, who tells her that there is a leak and accuses her equipment of being faulty. Cutter insists that her tools are flawless and decides to check to see whose data is false. Fritz, Roger, and Duncan decide to check on the canisters themselves to see if they find any faulty ones.

Fritz, Roger, and Duncan recruit Needleman and Smitty but find nothing wrong with the canisters. When they run into Sunny, she offers to show them around her work area with Roger being excitedly knowledgeable about her work. The group find nothing wrong with Sunny's equipment and is lead to believe that Cutter was in the wrong. However, when they meet up again, Cutter reveals that she double-checked her equipment and found that everything on her end was right, causing Cutter and Sunny's rivalry to intensify.

During the lunch break, Tylor takes the opportunity to head to FearCo. to return Johnny's card. Val agrees to stay behind to make sure nobody knows that he is gone. When Tylor arrives at Fear Co., he immediately finds Johnny who thanks him for returning his card, but then offers to give him a tour of the facilities. Tylor ends up enjoying the tour and gets a peek at their scare floor, though he cannot see the inside. Eventually, Tylor politely turns down Johnny's offer, which he takes pretty well. Tylor finds himself having to rush back to Monsters, Inc. when he realizes that the lunch hour is over.

At Tylor's workstation, Val struggles to keep the illusion that Tylor is still there. When she sees that the door has arrived, she reluctantly goes in and meets a little girl named Avani. She ends up befriending and playing with her, unknowingly collecting her laughs for the energy cannister. Val leaves, with Mike spotting her, just as Tylor arrives. Both Tylor and Val are shocked to see the canister filled up, though they infer to a passing Celia that it was Tylor's doing. Afterwards, Mike goes to Val and offers that she should try out to be a jokester, much to her surprise.

Later at night, Duncan goes up to Tylor's workstation and finds in the trash a coffee cup that Tylor had brought back from Fear Co. and suspects that he is the leaker.

Trivia[]

  • Interestingly, this episode opens with Val pretending to smoke a cigar using a marker in place of an actual one.
  • This episode reveals that:
    • Cutter had a former romantic relationship that turned into a rivalry with a coworker, Sunny Sunshine.
    • Needleman is the one who gave Smitty braces, admitting that he has no orthodontist training whatsoever.
    • Rosie quit her job as jokester at Monsters, Inc. to become a scarer at Fear Co.
    • Roger Rogers has a second heart.
      • For this case, it is unknown if other monsters have more than one heart or just Roger.
  • This is the only episode of the second season in which Sulley does not appear.
    • This is also the second episode where Sully does not appear in after Bad Hair Day.
  • When a device is used to scan the power of a laugh canister to detect any potential leaks, a sound similar to the Kingdom Hearts selection sound is played when the detection reads 100% full.
    • Coincidentally, Christopher Swindle, who voices Fungus, Theodore Pauley, and Thaddeus Bile in the show, also voiced Sulley in Kingdom Hearts III.
