David is a character in the Disney/Pixar animated series, Monsters at Work.

Background[]

David was a monster who served as a repairman at MIFT. During his life at MIFT, he used to be good friends with Cutter, Duncan, Fritz, and Val prior to Tylor's arrival at Monsters, Incorporated often showing a value of being honest and reliable. However, during his repair job at Monsters, Inc., he worked at the Shredder Shaft B, the place where doors are decommissioned and destroyed via shredder. During his routine, a doorknob jam occurred during David's lifetime working at the shredder shaft, which resulted in an incident of David being caught into the shredder shaft and being killed in process, resulting in the loss of the MIFT employee.

Following David's death, a memorial desk was placed in the MIFT area at Monsters, Inc., followed by a piece of hair placed on a jar (his remains) as well as a candle making up his memorial desk in honor of David's passing. In addition to the memorial placed on his desk at MIFT, it is revealed that Monsters, Inc. holds an event known as "David Day", an event to honor David's passing where employees (including MIFT employees) pay tribute to David who supported the company with David's legacy living within MIFT's hearts.

Physical Appearance[]

David has a hot pink hairy body all over him with shaded spots located on the bottom part of his body. Located on the top of David's body are two large eyes with teal irises on it. He is shown to have two purple arms decorated in a pattern of purple and orange as well as four claws on his hands. In addition to these, David has two large bushy eyebrows located on the top of his eyes matching the color of his body.

Role in the series[]

David has not appeared physically in the series, as only his memorial desk depicting his remains (a small piece of hair), a portrait of himself, as well as a candle placed on his desk are seen throughout the series.

The episode "Bad Hair Day" focuses on David the most where Duncan, Cutter, Val, and Fritz celebrate David Day in honoring David's legacy. Soon as Duncan plans to bring in donuts for the event, Duncan tells Tylor that David did not like donuts while Cutter recaps that four years ago, David was pulled into a shredder shaft and was killed where his remains, a clump of pink hair, was placed into a jar in honor of David's passing. As MIFT continues their celebration, they decide not to get haircuts where they go to a salon without getting one. During a discussion with Val and Duncan, Tylor plans to take care of Roto, take care of Cutter's canister, and light the candle before the day is done.

Soon as Tylor feeds Roto a treat, he then plans to take care of Cutter's canister which Tylor tries to take care of Roto only for Tylor to accidentally knock down the jar where David's remains are placed where Roto attempts to swallow David's hair, despite Tylor's protests which Roto suddenly swallows David's hair, leading Tylor on a chase to retrieve Roto's hair only for Roto to escape via tube, leading Tylor to find a replacement of David's hair on the jar. Later when Tylor approaches Roze in a plan to "replace" David's hair while trying to discuss about being a good MIFT employee attempting to be honest and reliable, Roto then sees the conversation between Tylor and Roze, interrupting the conversation which Tylor plans to go after Roto who has swallowed David's hair only for Val to approach Tylor planning to have lunch at the hallway, the area where David had his lunch.

During lunch with the MIFT employees, Tylor discusses with his coworkers that David used to eat his lunch at the hallway on the way to repair which George Sanderson replies that David had great hair. During a conversation of how MIFT was able to retrieve a clump of David's hair, Cutter replies that she found David's hair at the shredder shaft - the place where dead doors become decommissioned and shredded, which is the place where David was killed. Tylor then explains to Duncan that area known as Shredder Shaft B was David's last repair job which Fritz replies that David was caught at the area and killed during his routine repair after a doorknob jam at the area, which resulted in the shredder shaft being shut down, just as Tylor plans to take care of Roto again after a conversation with the MIFT employees.

Planning to take care of Roto, Tylor then rides on a transport vehicle to find Roto and retrieve David's remains which as Roto suddenly appears, Tylor suddenly arrives at the area where David was killed, the Shredder Shaft B which was shut down after David's death. Tylor finds another remain of David which Tylor accidentally pulls a switch to activate the shredder process which as Tylor attempts to retrieve it, various contraptions attempt to kill Tylor in the same way as David. Tylor then attempts to toss his hard hat onto the shredders to avoid ending up the same way as David only for Tylor to be knocked out unconsciously. Tylor then finds himself in a near-death experience where he finds a mysterious figure none other than David himself. During a conversation with Tylor, at first through metaphorical phrases. David's spirit tells Tylor that love is all he needs which while talking, Tylor asks David a topic of what everyone loved which David's spirit replies to him to be honest and reliable. Later, Tylor regained his consciousness after realizing he is safe after all due to the construction helmet which hit a lever and deactivated the shredding process.

Back at MIFT, Tylor returns Roto back to his cage where he tells the latter to cough out David's hair only for Roze to enter, explaining to Tylor that she decided to give Tylor a clump of her hair which she discusses with Tylor that he reminds herself of another young employee full of passion and zeal, brimming with untapped talent just before Roze leaves. Later, Val, Fritz, Duncan, Cutter, and Tylor return to the area where Fritz tells his companions to light the candle to keep David's legacy alive; however, upon observing the jar where David's hair is supposed to be at, the MIFT employees don't recognize David's hair as it is found out that Roto has swallowed David's hair. Roto finally coughs out the lump of David's hair. Tylor then tells his fellow employees the truth that Roto was the one who swallowed David's hair and attempted to retrieve his hair back but he failed and attempted to get Roze's hair to replace David's remains, trying to clarify that he wanted to be a jokester all along. Fritz then replies to Tylor that he told the truth just like David did before he died. Val approaches Tylor, praising him for being reliable and finding another remain of David's hair. After Val tells Tylor that he is the opposite of David, Cutter brings Tylor a bag of David's hair which was kept in a foot locker under the stairs, which Tylor agrees that he was the opposite of David. Tylor then places the jar with David's remains on it back on his memorial desk to continue honoring David which Val asks Tylor that his legacy remains within MIFT's hearts as the two continue observing David to continue honoring his legacy.
