Hamster & Gretel is a Disney Channel animated action comedy series created by Dan Povenmire. It is the sixth installment of the Phineas and Ferb franchise following Phineas and Ferb, Take Two with Phineas and Ferb, Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Across the 2nd Dimension, Milo Murphy's Law, and Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe, and is produced by Disney Television Animation. It premiered on Disney Channel on August 12, 2022, immediately after the network premiere of Zombies 3.[1][2]

On January 13, 2023, the show has been renewed for a second season as part of Dan Povenmire's new overall deal with Disney Branded Television, along with the revival of Phineas and Ferb.[3]

Premise[]

The series features siblings the perky Gretel Grant-Gomez and overprotective older brother, Kevin, and Gretel's pet hamster named Hamster. On their birthdays after Kevin gets his driver's license, the siblings are visited by space aliens whose UFO bestows them superpowers. However, Kevin's powers accidentally go into Hamster instead, and they form the duo of "Hamster & Gretel". Now Kevin must figure out how to work with both Gretel and Hamster to protect their city from mysterious dangers.[1]

Trivia[]

  • This is the first series Dan Povenmire created without Jeff "Swampy" Marsh.
  • This is the same universe of Phineas and Ferb/Milo Murphy's Law.
  • The show is a parody of the fairy tale, Hansel & Gretel.
  • The main characters have a mother from Venezuela.[7]
  • This series features the voice acting debut of Melissa "Meli" Povenmire, Dan Povenmire's daughter and aspiring voice actress.
  • A sneak peek was shown on June 3, 2022, during the premiere of The Villains of Valley View.
  • This is Disney Channel's sixth series to feature Latino characters after Wizards of Waverly Place, Stuck in the Middle, Gabby Duran & the Unsittables, The Owl House, and Ultra Violet & Black Scorpion.
    • However, this is also Disney Channel's second series to feature Venezuelan lead characters after Gabby Duran & the Unsittables.
      • Coincidentally, both Hamster & Gretel and Gabby Duran & the Unsittables both involve aliens in the main plot.
  • The Destructess is voiced by Alyson Stoner, who voiced Isabella Garcia-Shapiro in Phineas and Ferb and Lydia in Milo Murphy's Law.
    • This is the first Disney Channel series where Alyson Stoner voices the villain.
  • The APM track "The Lineman" is heard in the official series trailer.
  • The behaviors of the three main characters are similar to Phineas, Ferb, and Candace:
    • Gretel is similar to Phineas, given that she's always optimistic, and is uniquely designed from the rest of the cast.
    • Hamster is similar to Ferb, given both don't talk as often as the protagonist and only speaking for comic relief, and both are constantly sporting neutral facial expressions.
    • Kevin is similar to Candace, given that he's the older sibling who's often complaining. He also bears a similar resemblance to Jeremy Johnson, and his clothes almost match the Mr. Slushy Dawg uniform worn by Jeremy.
  • The opening and closing credits use the font Cooper Black, which was introduced in Milo Murphy's Law.
  • The end credits sequence are the same exact structure as Milo Murphy's Law, using pale-focused freeze-frames of specific moments from each of the featured episodes.
  • This is the second Disney Channel animated series that originally premiered on a Friday, but would later premiere future episodes on Saturdays. (The first was The Ghost and Molly McGee.)
  • This, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and Hailey's On It!, are the last DTVA animated shows to feature serialized elements and story arcs, due to the announcement on October 2021 that Disney Television Animation would move story-driven shows away from Disney Channel (future story driven shows will be on Disney+ instead) and move onto more episodic-musical shows.
  • This is overall the 9th series by DTVA to be serialized/story-driven.
  • This is currently the only "Dwampyverse" show that currently does not have any Halloween nor Christmas-themed episodes.
