In the book, the results of a project of the “Group for Aeronautical Research and Technology in Europe” (Garteur) are documented.
In the last twenty-five years a number of controller design methods have been developed. In industry usually classical design methods, especially frequency-response design methods, are applied. The aim of the study is to present the state of the art of modern robust control design techniques and to reduce the gap between theory and practice. Two benchmark problems are considered: a research civil aircraft model (RCAM) of a large modern cargo aircraft and a high incidence research model (HIRM) of a military aircraft. Both benchmarks are based on six degrees of freedom mathematical aircraft dynamics models, defined in the Matlab/Simulink software package.
The book is divided into four parts. Part I contains the tutorials of twelve design methods: Multiobjective parameter synthesis, Eigenstructure assignment, linear quadratic optimal control, Lyapunov techniques, \(H_\infty\) mixed sensitivity, \(H_\infty\) loop shaping, \(\mu\)-synthesis, nonlinear dynamic inversion, robust inverse dynamics estimation, model following, predictive control and fuzzy logic control. For each method a short summary of the main ideas is presented.
Part II is devoted to the RCAM benchmark definitions and to the proposed designs. A classical control approach is included.
In Part III the control law problem based on the military aircraft consideration is specified. Six of the twelve methods presented in part I are applied to this problem.
In part IV the different approaches are evaluated by teams of the aeronautical industry.
This book is a valuable contribution to system control-literature. Especially part IV should be of interest for every control engineer.
