Controlling plants with delay. (English) Zbl 0562.93039

A generalized Smith regulator for multi-input, multi-output systems is considered together with the Gray-Hunt-Horowitz regulator which is a variant of the Smith regulator. The exponential stability of both systems is characterized; in particular the plant must be exponentially stable. Uncertainty in the delay, plant saturation and disturbances are considered and the limitations which these impose on the system performance are discussed, leading to robust stability results. The two schemes are compared with respect to a representative example. Finally, the two schemes are generalized to certain nonlinear systems and by using extended space theory a characterization of the stability of the nonlinear regulators is given.
