Been seeing lots of things for this book lately. Figured I should give it a try since I was looking for a new read. It‘s daunting at the size of it and how long it is, but I‘m enjoying it so far.

This #chunkster #readjapaneseculture was such an amazing book I managed to inhale it in two and half days. Murakami is such an imaginative writer and you really have to just give in and table reality and let yourself be pulled in. This real is similar to Orwell's 1984 but with Murakami flair. #bookspin book @TheAromaofBooks

Yet another personal favourite - #HarukiMurakami with another magical weird surreal rotten journey through a parallel world with two moons. 🌒🌑

New book from my local bookstore and watching firefly on its 20th anniversary makes for a great evening
This #letterq is an investment of time- 46 hours on audio! It got a little weird for me in places, but the complex way it all comes together is masterful!

Here's my #bookspinbingo board for July. I finished 12 books, which is low for me, but we had a lot going on around here. I was DNFing books left and right.
I read the tagged book as a buddy read that started in late June, and really liked it a lot!

Dun dah dah! I finished! 🎺🎶🎶
This was a 4 star, 1319 page read. If you‘ve read Murakami you‘ll know his straight forward writing style makes the pages go fast & you‘ll be prepared for fantastical elements popping out of an otherwise realistically drawn setting. You might be prepared for a bonkers plot, which this truly is and some very odd sex scenes. But what this story also has is characters so good you‘d quite happily sit with them 🔽
Slowly making progress. I‘m enjoying this but Mr Murakami you have some weird 🤪 going on in your brain!
I've finally decided to stop putting it off. I have started my book for the #ChunksterChallenge2022 😅

Link to It's Only a Paper Moon sung by Ella Fitzgerald. I'm going to be humming that all evening now.
❄That depends - on my mood, the genre and/or the book.
When there's magical realism and or surrealism involved, slow burn is perfect
most times. 👌
❄What an epic. Enjoyed the plot of that one playing out so much.

I'm going to try and read the tagged book.

I am in complete awe of Haruki Murakami. A fantastical adventure tale about loneliness and love, this book is perfectly paced and with a complex story, unforgettable characters, and simple prose that lets the story shine. The book is long, which gave me pleasure as I luxuriated in the knowledge that I would be able to remain in Aomame and Tengo‘s world for a long time. This book has now become one of my favorites. Ten stars out of five!
I am loving this book about a young woman who grew up as a Jehovah‘s Witness and a young man who ghostwrites a book by a teenage girl who grew up in a Japanese cult. There‘s so much suspense in the plot that I can‘t stop turning the pages. Murakami‘s clean style is deceptively simple, as always — there‘s so much to unpack in this marvelous book.
I was a little intimidated because this was 1157 pages but it certainly didn‘t feel that long. While I could have done without the weird sex bits the sheer wtfness of it was good. I was continually coming up with more theories as I read and having to readjust when something else happened. Worth the time it took to read.

I have so many theories going around in my head about this and I‘m not quite at 50% yet so I‘m excited to see where it goes. I don‘t know what I expected this to be but I am surprised I‘m not feeling bogged down by the size. Maybe it‘s because Callie is keeping me company.

“If our collective memory is taken from us—is rewritten—we lose the ability to sustain our true selves.“
I think this hits especially hard because I went to library school and took archival electives.
I‘m so happy it‘s porch reading weather! It‘s been like over 85F for so long that I almost forgot what good weather felt like.
Decided to start this in an effort to tackle my BookSpin backlog. I only have two chunksters left but the other is made up of like 250 short stories.
Completely absorbing, the best novel I‘ve stumbled across as of late. A young woman in 1984 Tokyo hops an expressway barrier, to inadvertently enter a dangerous new world. A modern love story, but then, its wrapped up within so many interlocking elements of sci-fi, literary history, philosophy, Western noir and Japanese mythology, maybe a simple label like “love story” rings false. Do not let the length deter you!
This was not about the mere loss of her virginity but rather the sanctity of an individual human being's soul. No one had the right to invade such sacred precincts with muddy feet.
Love Murakami's writing

I heard about this "strangely-titled" book years ago but suddenly became interested when I realized that it's a spin on Orwell's "1984."
Taking place in Japan in the year 1984, it's a strange, stunning, sexy and surprising Orwellian spinoff with very eccentric characters. One of those books where you really don't know what to expect.

About to record a new episode. We're selecting our #seasonalread for the winter. These are some of the candidates.

A great combination of fantasy and history set in Japan. Two different story that at first seem completely unrelated gradually come together to make a complete whole.
Warning has some very graphic parts that are at times quite disturbing. Not for the faint of heart. I would definitely read more by this author
Starting the new year's reading with Murakami❤️
I've already read 'Kafka on the Shore' last year, and I plan to read all Murakami books this year! Wish me luck :)
Apparently it's that time of the month again as @TheAromaofBooks has posted the reminder about the upcoming #BookSpin. For the new year I've completely revamped my list to include books for a challenge I'm participating in during the new year. Looking forward to the draw as always. I still don't think I'm up for the bingo though.
It's not me but the world that's deranged.
Yes, that settles it.

This chunkster started off strong. Murakami writes with such ease of other-worldly subjects that it takes little effort to embrace the fantasy... unfortunately the emphasis on Ushikawa in book 3 snapped me back to reality and I lost the magic 💫 That, plus the abundant repetition of certain points, left me fatigued & disappointed by the time I reached page 1157 (not that I was counting...)
If only Murakami had stopped while he was ahead!
Book 1 complete, 2 more to go 💫
#3books #iDNFed
I used to never give up on books, but the older I get, the easier it's gotten. I dnf books all the time now. These 3 are somewhat unique in that I have tried multiple times to read each one. Twice with Night Circus and CRA. I got pretty far into 1Q84 on my 4th try. None are bad books. But for some reason I find myself putting them down and not picking them back up. Maybe one day.

So I finished the book often referred to as Murakami‘s magnum opus. The book is very well written, character descriptions are great and overall quite interesting. As you finish the book you realise there was no great plot as such and you don‘t get the closure you‘d have liked. The narration on Audible however was really great, and enriched the experience significantly. Overall it‘s worth a read, but I‘d definitely recommend the audio version.

It was a strange and fascinating story that I really enjoyed, once I managed to wade through the often gratuitous and unnecessarily detailed sex scenes. I'm no prude, but seriously!
I get that some of it was relevant, but there was also so much that wasn't that it was uncomfortable.
Aside from that, the story was fascinating! I loved the slow introduction to the 'little people' that we got, the creepy vibes and mystery that Sakigake...
