The Craftsman
The Craftsman | Sharon Bolton
Catching him will make her career - and change her forever. August, 1999 On the hottest day of the year, Assistant Commissioner Florence Lovelady attends the funeral of Larry Glassbrook, the convicted murderer she arrested thirty years earlier. A master carpenter and funeral director, Larry imprisoned his victims, alive, in the caskets he made himself. Clay effigies found entombed with their bodies suggested a motive beyond the worst human depravity. June, 1969 13-year- old Patsy Wood has been missing for two days, the third teenager to disappear in as many months. New to the Lancashire police force and struggling to fit in, WPC Lovelady is sent to investigate an unlikely report from school children claiming to have heard a voice calling for help. A voice from deep within a recent grave. August, 1999 As she tries to lay her ghosts to rest, Florence is drawn back to the Glassbrooks' old house, in the shadow of Pendle Hill, where she once lodged with the family. She is chilled by the discovery of another effigy - one bearing a remarkable resemblance to herself. Is the killer still at large? Is Florence once again in terrible danger? Or, this time, could the fate in store be worse than even her darkest imaginings?

It starts off a bit slow but ultimately becomes a banger of an audiobook. Nathalie Buscombe does a great job.

Definitely different from any other thrillers I've read this year.

Book three of #summerween.

FantasyChick @maich Thank God for washable paints. I had little green footprints all over the house before I stuck him in that chair 🤣🤣🤣 Making memories I guess? Lol 3y
slategreyskies @FantasyChick when things got extremely messy when my boys were toddlers, I used to take a photo before I cleaned them up. One photo is framed and in the spare room of the day my then four year old decided to color both his face and his brother‘s face with marker. They look so pleased with themselves in that photo, but it took days for the marker to come off!! It‘s funny now, but it wasn‘t then!! 🤣 3y
FantasyChick Bahahaha @slategreyskies That's a good idea! A picture of the mess maybe next to the finished product. A little before and after. They do love to make messes, don't they? 🤣 3y

Good detective/witchy thriller! I did not guess the ending at all 👍🏻 good read.
BUT if very overt sexism from the 1960s bothers you - don‘t read. I rolled my eyes a lot.

AlaMich Oh my, did I just finish reading a sterling example of 1960s white dude sexism!! The icing on the cake was the PI protagonist thawing out the frigid ice maiden, fixing her daddy issues and providing sexual fulfillment for the first time in her life. 🤢 5y
TrishB @AlaMich 🙄 I think this one was a bit more true to real life at the time, but still....... 5y

Very good mystery with Gothic details set in a small town with a history of witchcraft lore. (Think of Salem in the UK.) Love the protagonist, a pioneering woman in the local police force. Subplot involving a group of women interested In history of witchcraft. 4.5 stars. Readers who enjoy a touch of the occult in their fiction will particularly enjoy this.

A psychological crime thriller that was not at all what I expected. Exciting through the end and very hard to put down. Great writing, and this is really a perfect book for #screamathon reading. With some excellent witchy stuff that elevated it to something really special. 🔮

I‘d heard a lot about Sharon Bolton but this was my 1st of her books.I have to say, though I found it a compelling read, it didn‘t quite live up to the hype.Maybe I was expecting too much🤷🏻‍♀️This was still a very good crime novel, lots of twists & turns with a lot of great characters.I did guess who it was halfway but isn‘t that half the fun of detective fiction? The blatant misogyny in the 1969 sections made my blood boil though!🤬 #HSreadathon

So far, this is a bloody brilliant crime novel by Sharon Bolton! Set in the Pendle region of Lancashire in the north of England, it weaves together police procedural & witches quite seamlessly. Told in two time periods, one 1969 the other 1999, it‘s told in the POV of Florence, a WPC in 69 now a high ranking commissioner, who in 69 was investigating the murders of 3 teenagers, buried alive by the resident undertaker. #HSreadathon

A dark and atmospheric read. Flossie is a good detective, but her skills are used against her by her own sexist fellow police officers. How could she know so much about the murdered teens unless she was in on it? This chilling mystery goes back and forth in time to a satisfying but unexpected end.

I was up late finishing this one!!! I couldn‘t put it down. I had to know! This a really good mystery that takes place in 1999 and in the 60‘s. It‘s from the point of view the only female cop on the force in a small town in 60‘s. Children start to go missing and they are trying to figure out if they have run away or are kidnapped. Jump to 1999 and how the case effected her. A smart female lead, a good mystery and witches. This is in my wheelhouse.

This book was a lot of fun to read, despite its gruesome subject. There were a few gaps in logic toward the end, but if you don‘t think about it too much (I am a big over-thinker), it holds together well enough. 😂 It looks like it‘s the first on a series, and I‘ll definitely read the next one - Florence and Tom are an entertaining couple!
